ChatGPT became the face of generative AI when OpenAI released it to the public for free, but there are some costs involved.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT launched on November 30, 2022 and quickly became synonymous with public-facing generative AI. Since then, the team has continually grown the features of the service, expanding it to learn from you through ongoing memory and develop an upgraded voice mode, and allowing users to interact with the platform in real-time.

However, with more features and improvements come increased costs. Here’s a look at how much ChatGPT costs and whether you can use it for free.

Can you use ChatGPT for free?

From the very beginning, you have been able to use ChatGPT for free. That said, it was initially quite limited in what it could do in its free version. With more generative AI models, OpenAI has managed to add more features even to the free version.

Now, ChatGPT free users can use OpenAI’s flagship GPT-4o model. This offers responses using content found across the web, access to the GPT Store to add extras to your chatbot, and the ability to upload files and photos and ask questions about those uploads.

Preferences are also stored for users as “memories”, meaning it learns from you the more you use it. There’s also advanced data analysis, where it can analyze data and files like spreadsheets and PDFs.

Of course, there are downsides in a bid to encourage users to upgrade to a paid version. There are daily capacity limits on the more advanced GPT-4o model, after which you will automatically get downgraded to the lesser GPT-3.5 model.

How much does ChatGPT cost?

For users who want more from their ChatGPT, you can upgrade to ChatGPT Plus, for the cost of $20 per month.

This offers five times more capacity than the free version, as well as early, priority access to future updated learning models and new tools and features, such as OpenAI’s macOS client for ChatGPT. Users can also use more data analysis features to create interactive charts and tables, as well as integration with Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and device storage.

There are other plans to be aware of as well, depending on who you are and what you’re using ChatGPT for. For those who own a small business or organization and want more than one ChatGPT license, you can pay for ChatGPT Team at $30 per user per month or $25 per user per month billed annually, with plans available for up to 149 users.

As well as all the features that come with ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Team offers a dedicated workspace and admin tools for team management. Those within a team can also build and share custom apps, much like those found in the GPT Store, based on OpenAI models to better fine-tune the model to their communal needs.

For larger organizations, the next level up is ChatGPT Enterprise, priced at $60 per user per month with a minimum of 150 users and a 12-month contract. This corporate-focused plan isn’t publicly advertised price-wise, but those terms are what those with a contract have reported.

This plan includes all of the above and also “enterprise-grade” privacy and data analysis, as well as enhanced performance and customization options. It’s unclear exactly what that enhanced performance brings, but the admin console features tools to help manage how employees are using ChatGPT. There are also integrations for single sign-on, domain verification and a dashboard showing usage and engagement statistics.

Shareable conversation templates also help ChatGPT Enterprise users to put together internal workflows and bots within ChatGPT to get more out of the platform. Companies can also create entirely customized solutions to best suit their needs as required.

Last but not least, ChatGPT Enterprise customers are eligible for Business Associate Agreements with OpenAI, which are required by American law for companies using tools like ChatGPT with private health information such as medical records.

Are there lower cost options for ChatGPT?

For students, as well as university faculty, staff researchers and campus operations teams, there’s also the ChatGPT Edu plan. This is a relatively new offering with unpublished pricing that is presumably communicated on request. It works much like ChatGPT Enterprise, with the addition that it supports SCIM. This open protocol helps to simplify cloud identity and access management.

Another new plan is OpenAI for Nonprofits, a pretty recent offering geared towards nonprofit tech solutions. It doesn’t come with a set of its own features but acts more like a tiered range of discounts for select eligible organizations.

Those discounts in real terms mean that nonprofits can access ChatGPT Team for a discounted rate of $20 monthly per user. Larger nonprofits (those who need more than 149 users) can get a 50% discount on ChatGPT Enterprise, which works out to about $30 per user.

Interested organizations must prove themselves through various strict eligibility requirements, however. They can be based anywhere in the world to apply for discounts, but OpenAI isn’t currently accepting applications from academic, medical, religious, or governmental institutions.

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has closed its investigation into whether Ethereum (ETH), should be classified as a security.

Ethereum developer Consensys announced in June 19 through an X post that the SEC’s Enforcement Division had notified them about the conclusion of the investigation into Ethereum 2.0. The post reads:

Today we’re happy to announce a major win for Ethereum developers, technology providers, and industry participants: the Enforcement Division of the SEC has notified us that it is closing its investigation into Ethereum 2.0.

This means that the SEC will not bring charges alleging that sales of ETH are securities transactions.

A sigh of relief

Consensys had previously sent a letter to the SEC on June 7, requesting clarification on the status of the investigation, citing the agency’s approval of spot Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in May. Such an approval purportedly implied that ETH was considered a commodity.

Laura Brookover, senior counsel at Consensys, shared the SEC’s response letter, confirming that the agency did not intend to recommend an enforcement action. The SEC has not yet provided an official comment on the matter.

In March, reports emerged that the SEC had issued subpoenas to several companies in an attempt to label ETH as a security. Still, Consensys’ lawsuit against the SEC over its notice suggesting that the MetaMask crypto wallet may have violated securities laws is still ongoing.

The lawsuit claimed that the SEC and its chairman, Gary Gensler, had believed ETH to be a security since early 2023, with the SEC’s Division of Enforcement Director, Gurbir Grewal, approving a formal order of investigation on March 28, 2023.

The resolution of the SEC’s investigation into Ethereum’s security status is expected to provide clarity and relief for the Ethereum community and the broader cryptocurrency industry.

Martin Shkreli — known as the “Pharma Bro” — admitted on Tuesday to being behind the controversial TrumpCoin (DJT) token.

According to a June 19 Coindesk report, Shkreli said during a recent X Space voice chat that he created it with Barron Trump. The admission came after days of speculation and investigative efforts by prominent figures in the crypto community.

The DJT token gained viral attention on Monday due to its alleged links to former President Donald Trump and his son Barron. Blockchain sleuths discovered similarities between the DJT token’s Telegram channel and a token supported by Shkreli.

Despite initial denials, Shkreli confirmed his involvement in a podcast and alleged direct messages with blockchain sleuth ZachXBT. ZachXBT has shared screenshots of a conversation with Shkreli whose authenticity cannot be confirmed, in which the pharma tycoon appears to write:

Between us please. […] I have over 1,000 pieces of evidence I created [DJT] with Barron.

The revelation sparked a heated exchange between Shkreli and influential crypto trader GiganticRebirth (GCR), a known Trump supporter. GCR called out Barron Trump’s supposed involvement in the token, offering a staggering $100 million bet against it.

The betting spree first started when Twitter user Alex Wice bet $1 million that DJT does not involve Trump against Shkreli. GCR also claimed:

I’m well aware there is a cabal strategy to bribe people in the Trump orbit to pretend they had something to do with this, when in reality a cabal of crypto whales did a presale and allocation to KOLs.

Who is Martin Shkreli?

Martin Shkreli is an American former hedge fund manager and convicted felon. He gained notoriety in 2015 when his company, Turing Pharmaceuticals, acquired the rights to the life-saving antiparasitic drug Daraprim and then raised its price from $13.50 to $750 per pill. This move lead to widespread criticism and accusations of price gouging.

Prior to this controversy, Shkreli founded and managed several hedge funds and pharmaceutical companies. In 2017, he was convicted of securities fraud related to his management of these funds and sentenced to seven years in federal prison. He was released early in May 2022.

Shkreli’s actions and public persona, which included frequent use of social media to provoke and troll critics, made him a controversial figure often vilified in the media. His case sparked a national debate about prescription drug prices and the regulation of the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

The bounty

In response to the growing controversy, on-chain intelligence firm Arkham posted a $150,000 bounty for anyone who could unveil the DJT token’s creator. The firm wrote:

F**k it, we ball. $150,000 to the first person to definitively prove the identity of the creator of $DJT. Only on Arkham Intel.

This prompted ZachXBT to submit his findings, leading to Shkreli’s admission. Shkreli now seeks to hold GCR accountable for the $100 million bet, claiming that he co-created the token with Barron Trump’s involvement.

However, the Trump campaign has not responded to requests for comment, and former President Trump has not mentioned the token on his TruthSocial social media platform. Amidst the drama, at least one large holder in both DJT and Shkreli’s other project, Shoggoth.ai, has profited.

Transactional data shows a wallet sold nearly $830,000 worth of DJT late Tuesday. DJT token prices have fallen by 58% in the past 24 hours, according to DEXTools data.

Generative AI can have “hallucinations” when it doesn’t know the answer to a question; here’s how to spot it.

Researchers from the University of Oxford have devised a new method to help users work out when generative AI could be “hallucinating.” This comes about when an AI system is posed a query that it doesn’t know the answer to, causing it to make up an incorrect answer.

Luckily, there are tips to both spot this when it’s happening and prevent it from happening altogether.

How to stop AI hallucinations

A new study by the team at the University of Oxford has produced a statistical model that can identify when questions asked of generative AI chatbots were most likely to produce an incorrect answer.

This is a real concern for generative AI models, as the advanced nature of how they communicate means they can pass off false information as fact. That was highlighted when ChatGPT went rogue with false answers back in February.

With more and more people from all walks of life turning to AI tools to help them with school, work, and daily life, AI experts like those involved in this study are calling for clearer ways for people to tell when AI is making up responses, especially when related to serious topics like healthcare and the law.

The researchers at the University of Oxford claim that their research can tell the difference between when a model is correct or just making something up.

“LLMs are highly capable of saying the same thing in many different ways, which can make it difficult to tell when they are certain about an answer and when they are literally just making something up,” said study author Dr Sebastian Farquhar while speaking to the Evening Standard. “With previous approaches, it wasn’t possible to tell the difference between a model being uncertain about what to say versus being uncertain about how to say it. But our new method overcomes this.”

However, there is of course still more work to do on ironing out the errors AI models can make.

“Semantic uncertainty helps with specific reliability problems, but this is only part of the story,” he added. “If an LLM makes consistent mistakes, this new method won’t catch that. The most dangerous failures of AI come when a system does something bad but is confident and systematic.

“There is still a lot of work to do.”

Taiwan’s software ratings board has approved TimeSplitters, the 2000 first-person shooter from Free Radical Design, for sale with a teen (15 and up) rating. Although hardly confirmation that a re-release is indeed coming, this ratings board has been something of a canary in publishing’s coal mine recently.

Gematsu noticed the listing, and noticed also that the first mention of Octopath Traveler’s arrival to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 also came from this kind of police-blotter checking. And anyway, it makes little sense that Plaion would bring back Timesplitters for a re-release and sell it only in Taiwan.

TimeSplitters has been rated for PS5 and PS4 in Taiwan. 99 percent likely it’s the PS2 version for the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, considering the platforms. Search “TimeSplitters” here to see the rating yourself: https://t.co/kSQ7a9X1P4 pic.twitter.com/InFED7ihTx

— Gematsu (@gematsu) June 18, 2024

More likely it’s part of a ramp-up to PlayStation’s catalog of classic PS2 games, both for sale and in the PlayStation Plus Extra catalog. Last month, Gematsu spotted an early PlayStation Store listing for 2002’s Star Wars: The Clone Wars on PS2, and that one came true as well (on June 11).

Until this point, there were no PlayStation 2 games emulated on PlayStation 5. PlayStation 5 is backward compatible with PS4 of course, and PlayStation 3 and PSOne games are available to PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium subscribers, respectively.

Anyway, it looks like an all-time great will be welcomed to the console soon. TimeSplitters launched in 2000 and has only appeared on PlayStation 2. Not PC, not Steam, not GOG, only PS2 on a disc. Though subsequent games delivered greater critical appraisal, the first TimeSplitters established its fandom and leaned into the first-person shooter gameplay qualities that had made Perfect Dark, GoldenEye 007, and others so popular, too.

What happened to TimeSplitters?

Despite the strong fanbase and the series’ enduring appeal — few IPs could draw this much attention almost 20 years after their last release — TimeSplitters and its studio have been jerked around by publishers for three console generations. Free Radical Design has been closed twice, once by Crytek in 2014 and again by Embracer Group in 2023.

That came two years after Embracer’s bold promise that it would reconstitute Free Radical (it did) for the expressed purpose of bringing back TimeSplitters (it did not). Embracer has since split into three different entities, (TimeSplitters’ rights holder, Plaion, is now a subsidiary of “Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends”) so fans are going to have to make do with the original games on new hardware.

Ditto is a Pokemon known for its ability to mimic other Pokemon and even humans – in a way that breaks the laws of physics.

The impossibility of Ditto’s powers (looking past the fact that it’s a fictional pink blob) has caused physicists on the Pokemon subreddit to investigate, seeking some way to make Ditto’s powers actually work according to our laws of science (which wasn’t an issue in this case of Pokemon weirdness). There are hundreds of responses attempting to explain how Ditto’s unique ability could actually be achieved.

Does Ditto actually change mass?

The discussion starts with a breakdown of the law of conservation of mass, with one user asking how Ditto, a 4kg lump of slime with a face, can spontaneously become a 400kg Steelix. Just where does the mass come from?

“Ditto’s HP stays the same, it’s not changing mass,” reasons one redditor. “It’s imitating the opponent.”

However, another argues back: “Ditto’s weight DOES change though. It needs to change weight for weight-based moves such as Low Kick, Grass Knot, and Heavy Slam. Thus it is changing mass.”

Yet another hypothesis states that PP (Power Points) which Pokemon need to perform attacks, could hold the answer to the question.

“PP is a form of stored energy that the Pokemon’s biological processes are capable of using to fuel various effects,” reasoned a Pokemon physicist (an unofficial title). “That’s where the extra mass comes from. It’s converted directly from PP. That’s also where a water Pokemon’s oceanic supply of liquid artillery comes from.”

While this checks out, it would require an unheard-of amount of energy in order to convert it into matter. Sadly, it seems that Ditto just wouldn’t function in the real world — although one element of Pokemon has made it into the real world.

Video game publisher Bandai Namco has quietly released Baten Kaitos 1 & 2 HD Remaster on Steam, bringing them to PC for the first time.

Not only that, but the bundle of games is currently available for a discounted price. The pair, made up of Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean, and Baten Kaitos Origins, is currently available for 10% off in an introductory offer that ends on July 1.

First published in 2003 and 2006 respectively, it’s been roughly two decades since fans first played through the role-playing games, initially available exclusively for the Nintendo GameCube and now available on PC for the very first time. Players can once again take up the narrative arcs of Kalas and Sagi on their respective journeys to battle the Alfard Empire.

This comes after Baten Kaitos 1 & 2 HD Remaster launched in September 2023 for the Switch only (where you can also create your own RPGs, should you wish to), despite rumors that they would also be coming for PC gamers. These rumors are now undoubtedly true, released in a surprise shadow-drop.

What’s new in Baten Kaitos?

As remasters of the original games, the dual remaster includes improved textures, environments, and character models, and an expanded aspect ratio so it’s suitable for modern monitors. Other quality improvements have been made throughout the game, from a refreshed UI for modern audiences, auto-save, and a help menu.

There are also two new modes: New Game+, which allows players to retain their Magnus, levels, and ranks; and New Game-, a level-restricted mode for players seeking a serious challenge.

The name has remained as Baten Kaitos to pull in nostalgic fans, although this almost wasn’t the case even back in 2003. Bandai Namco originally wanted to go in another direction but eventually followed the wishes of Yasuyuki Honne, the director of Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. The name Baten Kaitos came about while creating an airship for the first game, and was later woven into the naming of various other items in the in-game universe.

Frostpunk 2 is the sequel to the popular original city building title, furthering the bleak, ice-ridden, post-apocalyptic world and bringing in more political themes.

With the first title receiving critical acclaim, and even a BAFTA nomination, there’s no shock many are excited to see what’s in store for the next iteration.

Below, we’ll take you through the Frostpunk 2 release date, its trailers, platforms, editions, and other popular questions, so you know everything there is before jumping in and aiding The City once more.

Frostpunk 2 release date

Frontpunk 2 will launch on July 25, 2024, confirmed in the official release date reveal trailer for the game.

This is a great time for the game to release really with no absolutely huge titles taking the limelight in July, allowing those who wanted to get some game time in to do so mostly uninterrupted. Well, as long as you’ve boxed off the Elden Ring DLC that is.

Frostpunk 2 trailers

There have been a number of Frostpunk 2 trailers released since the game has been in development for some time. Here, we’ll take you through three of these, noting the differences and what they contain.

The first Frostpunk 2 trailer to hit our screens was the announcement for the game. This one was the typical announcement you’d expect – a CGI affair simply revealing that the game is in development, and a sneak peek at the tone of the world.

The follow up “The City Must Not Fall” trailer is again CGI-filled, but it provides more context as to what has happened to The City in the years since the last game, revealing that it’s not just about survival this time around, there are more factors in play.

The “Official Gameplay Trailer” for Frostpunk 2, gives us exactly that – a look into what to expect from the core mechanics of the game.

It showcases that the people of The City have a voice now, really putting a weight behind the decisions you make.

Of course, you’ll see the impressive visuals and beautifully designed UI too which furthers the already pretty original to new heights.

Frostpunk 2 platforms

Frostpunk 2 is a multi-platform title releasing on Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC.

While it is great that the second iteration of Frostpunk is still keeping in line with its release on consoles, those of who you played the original on your PS4 and Xbox One consoles will have to make the upgrade to newer gen tech to play this one.

Frostpunk 2 editions

There are two Frostpunk 2 editions available for purchase – the Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition.

The Standard Edition, as you would expect, is the base game and the base game only, no additional addons will be got by purchasing this version.

The Deluxe Edition, however, is the full bells and whistles option, perfect for you Frostpunk fanatics looking to get every bit of content possible.

If you do decide to get in on the Deluxe Edition, you’ll receive the base game, 72 hours of early access, 3 paid DLCs, an exclusive in-game item, the “Warm Flesh” novella, and digital artbook & soundtrack.

This is a pretty extensive list of extras, and probably worth the price difference between this and the Standard Edition all things considered.

Is Frostpunk 2 on Game Pass?

Yes, Frostpunk 2 is a day one Game Pass release meaning those of you who have a subscription to the service will be able to get it downloaded completely free of charge.

It is a console and PC Game Pass launch too, meaning no matter which platform you’re on, you’ll be able to play.

The original Frostpunk is also on Game Pass too, so if you want to get a refresher on some of the mechanics or jump in for the first time, you can get accustomed to what’s in store for the sequel while you wait for launch.

Is Frostpunk 2 multiplayer?

Sadly, for those of you who want to get in on some post-apocalyptic city-survival action with your friends, Frostpunk 2 is not the game for you.

Frostpunk 2 is single player only, which is no real surprise since the first title was also, but is still a shame all the same.

Chipmaking company AMD  has allegedly suffered a massive data hack, which could include sensitive employee and customer data.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is currently working with law enforcement to investigate claims of a huge data breach. by hacking group IntelBroker. The first reports of the hack came through on X, later to be reported on by PC Mag.

#DataBreach

A potential data breach at AMD has been detected on a hacking forum: IntelBroker is selling the data.

According to the post, in June 2024, AMD suffered a data breach leading to the compromise of information such as future AMD products, spec sheets, employee… pic.twitter.com/P28SvFt1Eo

— HackManac (@H4ckManac) June 18, 2024

“We are aware of a cybercriminal organization claiming to be in possession of stolen AMD data,” the company told PCMag on Tuesday. “We are working closely with law enforcement officials and a third-party hosting partner to investigate the claim and the significance of the data.”

According to the original post on X, the data that could be at risk includes “information such as future AMD products, spec sheets, employee databases, customer databases, property files, ROMs, source code, firmware, and finances.” That’s quite a range of information that could be sensitive to people both inside and outside of the company.

How bad could this data hack be for AMD?

PC Gamer reports that IntelBroker has previously successfully targeted the EU’s law enforcement agency Europol and UK-based bank Barclays. As other sources on X are also making claims that they have AMD’s data for sale, it would seem that the group does have its hands on the confidential data.

However, some of the data appears to be out of date, with several employees visible on a screenshot of the stolen information marked as ‘inactive.’ If that’s true for all the data, it could be that the information obtained is no longer pertinent (although it could also be that the more sensitive information is being withheld from public view for now).

With the chipmaking business making up the backbone of the PC industry, information on upcoming technology and models could be very valuable in the right hands. It remains to be seen how far the data hack reaches and what kind of outcome is in store for AMD.

AMD is not alone in suffering these sorts of cybercrime attacks, with Dell and a wide range of other major tech companies also reporting similar breaches.

The crypto market has experienced a significant drop in the past 24 to 48 hours, yet PlayDoge remains bullish as investors rally to its presale, which has now reached nearly $5 million.

This article will examine three potential reasons for this decline and introduce PlayDoge, a new token seeing demand despite the overall market conditions.

Possible causes of market decline

One reason suggested for the market drop is minor capitulation, but this isn’t convincing. The recent market performance isn’t tied to the Bitcoin halving in April. Although cryptocurrency mining firms saw their revenues drop by 55% due to the halving, industry experts expected these changes. So, we can rule out this reason.

Another factor could be low stablecoin issuance, indicating a lack of new money entering the cryptocurrency market. While this might reduce demand, it doesn’t fully explain the sell-off unless outflows exceed inflows. This means fewer people are buying cryptocurrencies, and selling activity might be driving prices down.

The most likely reason seems to be significant outflows from Bitcoin ETFs managed by firms like BlackRock and Fidelity. Large-scale selling can impact prices, especially if selling volume exceeds buying volume.

A recent development involving the SEC could also be affecting the market. The SEC’s chief officer, who enforced cryptocurrency regulations, has stepped down. His departure might have caused uncertainty, contributing to the market dip.

This officer was known for unclear laws and lack of guidance for the cryptocurrency community. His replacement might bring more favorable conditions for the market, potentially restoring confidence and stability.

PlayDoge: An alternative coin despite the market downturn

PlayDoge (PLAY) is emerging as one of the year’s most anticipated new meme coin launches. The retro Play-to-Earn project has surpassed the $4.8 million milestone in presale. With this early support, some analysts predict $PLAY could see significant gains once listed on DEXs.

$PLAY is quickly becoming popular in the meme coin market. This token blends internet meme culture with ’90s video game nostalgia to create an engaging gaming ecosystem. The concept is straightforward: players adopt a “Doge” pet and earn $PLAY tokens by keeping it healthy and happy.

#PlayDoge is 💯 across the board.

His stats speak for itself, you’ve just gotta keep him healthy! #Presale 👉 https://t.co/JT0VEofY4A#MemeCoin #Fallout #BNB #P2E pic.twitter.com/Jpzc6MteuE

— PlayDoge (@PlayDogeGame) June 5, 2024

This involves feeding it and playing 8-bit mini-games, reminiscent of beloved side-scrolling games. There’s even a leaderboard that rewards extra $PLAY tokens to the top pet caretakers. However, PlayDoge offers more than just fun and games.

Players can stake their $PLAY tokens to earn high APYs of 151%. With such utility, it’s no surprise PlayDoge is raising millions in presale. Currently, early investors can purchase $PLAY tokens through the presale for $0.0051. This price will increase in less than a day, encouraging investors to get involved early.

Once the presale ends, PlayDoge’s team plans to list $PLAY on a top-tier DEX, where supply and demand will determine the token’s value. Over 5,000 people have followed the project’s official X (Twitter) page, and a similar number have joined the Telegram channel.

PlayDoge’s success comes from its unique mix of retro gaming and a profitable staking system with smart tokenomics. While the meme coin market faces challenges, PlayDoge shows how innovation and nostalgia can attract interest.

If you want to make money in a bearish market, buy PlayDoge now and watch your investment grow when it hits exchanges. To take part in the $PLAY token presale, visit playdoge.io.
