Kadokawa Group, the Japanese media conglomerate that owns FromSoftware, has been subject to a malicious cyberattack, the company confirmed.

The group owns several game studios including FromSoftware, developers of Elden Ring, and Acquire Games, developers of Octopath Traveler. Outside of gaming, they are also involved in publishing and film. They also own the popular streaming service Niconico, which has been directly affected by the cyberattack.

On June 27, Kadokawa released a statement addressing the issue, which included the fact that the ransomware attack has been ongoing since June 8. They expressed “deep apologies for the significant inconvenience and trouble caused to its readers, users, writers, creators, business partners, shareholders, investors and other stakeholders by the system failure.”

They stated that their top priority is to restore their accounting functions due to how fundamental they are to business operations, and that they expect this to be concluded in early July. They are also prioritizing ” the manufacturing and distribution functions in the publication business,” due to how much revenue is generated by those functions.

What Kadokawa companies were affected by the cyberattack?

Kadokawa did not mention many of its subsidiary companies by name so it’s unknown how much of an effect the attack has had on specific companies. However, the statement mentioned several broad areas of its operations.

Judging by the statement, the publishing arm is one of the worst affected. The distribution of e-books was delayed due to the cyberattack, and shipment of existing (that is, not new) books is at one-third of the normal level while the company develops a solution to the attack.

The Niconico web services have also been affected, with all Niconico family services currently suspended and users left unable to log in to services that use their Niconico credentials. However, the media giant is working to resolve this and users will see services gradually returning to operation.

The gaming arm of Kadokawa was not mentioned in the statement, suggesting that these companies were not a target of the cyberattack. FromSoftware can continue celebrating the release of the best DLC ever made.

Kadokawa has confirmed that they do not retain any credit card information from customers, so while they are “investigating the possibility of information leakage with the support of external professional organizations,” no customer financial data is at risk, which should be a relief for many. They have not confirmed what information (such as player data or user data) might have been stolen by the attackers.

After a lot of hard work and a huge expansion, Cyberpunk 2077 became the game people wanted it to be, but CD Projekt Red thinks it still has space to improve in the sequel.

Codenamed Project Orion, the sequel to the sprawling RPG is being developed primarily by CDPR’s new studio in Boston, rather than its home base in Poland. In a recent episode of AnsweRED, the studio’s official podcast, the game’s acting Executive Producer Dan Hernberg spoke about why they feel this is the best thing for the game.

“I think Cyberpunk is obviously a uniquely American story. It’s got a lot of like punk energy, and it was written by an American, so it just seems right to do it in America,” he said.

Why is the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel being developed in America?

They also provided some specific examples of how the previous game not being developed in America by Americans led to some errors. Associate Game Director Paweł Sasko shared one story that went viral on Reddit, about the differences in manhole covers across the world.

“There’s this interesting story after the release of Cyberpunk 2077 that blew up on Reddit at some point, and it’s the manhole debacle. Like, the manholes that are covering the roads, right? There was this post with the guy saying that there is this immersive breaking bug in Cyberpunk, and the bug was about the fact that the covers for manholes for a sewer were the manholes that you use normally in Europe, in Germany, for a pavement. Those are not manholes that you normally cover in America on the streets.

“This is basically showing you the differences, right? When you go to America, there’s things like hydrants, where they are placed and how they look like. The street lights, the positions of that, the trash bins, right? They’re in the front of the house, right by the street. In Poland, in Europe, you don’t see it almost anywhere. There’s so much nuance. Dan, when we talk about it, he calls it the Americana.”

Hernberg then added that while the small differences between places aren’t necessarily immersion-breaking, they would be noticeable to people who lived in the place where the game was set. Having developers from America will allow for more “cultural touchpoints” with the audience.

CD Projekt Red has confirmed that they are also working on a sequel to The Witcher 3, codenamed Polaris.

Earlier this week we ran an important story about the games industry’s current trend of just expunging games from the annals of time when it has no further use for them. Either licences have expired and nobody deems it worthwhile to bother renewing them, or in this case here, it’s just decided to shut down the servers on the 12 million people who owned the game, maybe, if you are being cynical (not me obviously) because you have a new version in the pipeline.

A fan-led project is aiming to reverse the word Ubisoft did when it recently closed down The Crew by creating a server that the game connects to, rather than its previous now-defunct server.

In an interview with Eurogamer, modder whammy4 said, “We started pretty much as soon as Ubisoft announced the shutdown last December, It’s still the same game that everyone played before, except instead of connecting to Ubisoft’s central server, they will connect to ours.”

If you are playing solo you will also be able to run a local server on your own machine.

Whammy4 repeats the points we made in yesterday’s story about Forza Horizon 4, “I think Ubisoft heard enough criticisms from their customers, but I have one thing to say to The Crew’s community: they should absolutely not let Ubisoft keep getting away with such horrendous practices, otherwise it will just keep happening to more and more games, including The Crew’s sequels, and history will just keep repeating itself. People must not forget.”

And they are right.

“If the trend continues, in a decade we’ll have tons of unplayable, dead video games that people once loved and played, which is why video game preservation is extremely important before the situation spins out of control,” whammy4 said.

We’d argue it is already out of control with games able to be closed down on a whim. At least iif modders can keep games alive it helps with the preservation aspect, even if it is a bit like taking a photograph of the Mona Lisa.

PC gamers who prefer gamepads to console-and-mouse have a number of peripherals supported within Steam, from PlayStation 4 to Xbox Series X. The officially official Wireless Horipad for Steam, however, uses twin analog sticks instead of the unusual touch pads that the original Steam Controller employed.

The original Steam Controller, bundled with the long lost Steam Machine and Steam Link streaming hardware, was discontinued in 2019. It was noted for having two trackpads instead of twin analog joysticks. Some found this arrangement more fluid and intuitive, others were put off by having to learn what was basically a new control layout.

Hori’s official Steam controller comes in a more traditional layout, with ergonomically offset thumbsticks, a four-way directionl pad to the lower right of the left thumb, and a traditional X-Y-A-B face button mapping, plus shoulder buttons and analog triggers.

All of this is remapabble, of course, but for console video games that also launch on Steam, Hori is offering an out-of the box solution that plays like a PlayStation or Xbox with no fuss.

There are another four custom buttons that can be assigned multiple functions, whether that’s capturing a screenshot or gameplay, or something else. The “Steam button” in the middle, resembling the Xbox and PlayStation buttons at the center of those consoles’ dedicated controller, will bring up Steam’s Big Picture Mode.

When does the new Steam controller come out?

From there, players are able to customize and remap the controller to their preferences, as any PC gamer would expect. To be clear, Hori’s Wireless Horipad for Steam does not have any trackpads — nor does it have any vibration/rumble capability, or a headphone jack.

The Wireless Horipad will launch by the end of the October, and cost about $50 when it does go live. It’l come in four colors: white, black, blue, and yellow.

In July, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can play hundreds of cloud-enabled games through the Xbox app on select Fire TV devices, allowing access without a console. That includes a wide library, featuring games ranging from RPGs like RPGs like Starfield and Fallout 4 to racing games like Forza Horizon 5. The Amazon Fire TV stick also has the ability to run graphically intense Xbox games, such as Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.

How to play Xbox Games on Amazon Fire TV

You’ll need either a Fire TV Stick 4K Max or a Fire TV Stick 4K, which start from $49.99, and the free Xbox app downloaded onto your Fire TV device via the Amazon Appstore. You’ll also need a Microsoft account, meaning if you’re already an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate member, you’ll have instant access to stream and play hundreds of cloud-enabled titles in the Game Pass Ultimate library. If not, then you’ll need to sign up for the Ultimate membership.

From there, the entire library should be available to play, with support for the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, DualSense or DualShock 4 controllers. No console is required, offering access to selected Xbox games to some for the first time, without the high upfront cost of a console. By comparison, even the cheapest of Xbox consoles start from $299, as opposed to Fire TV’s $49.99 upfront cost.

Even if you already own a console, it’s also a convenient way to play in a different room from where you keep your console, or take your gaming on the go. Because you sign in with your Microsoft account, it will keep your progress within games synced no matter where you go, so long as you stay signed into the cloud.
