Running around in games is not for everybody. While some may like the process of getting from one side of a map to another, it’s definitely not something every player enjoys. At least when a game offers the opportunity of fast Travel it is there for whoever wishes to take advantage of it.

If you have started out playing The First Descendant you will note that the map is pretty sizable and is split into regions. Each of these regions has a Fast Travel spot so let’s quickly learn how to take advantage of that!

Fast Travel points in The First Descendant

As with most fast travel, you need to unlock certain areas of the story in order to return to that location when you want to in the future. They are shown on the map as green markers which highlight the position of Outposts.

How to Fast Travel

Once you have unlocked a point you can fast travel back to it for a later mission by doing the following.

Open the Map
Select the region you wish to go to
The area will open up into three zones
Select the section you want to travel to and long-press the Interact button (E – PC, A – controller)

Unlocking Fast Travel points

To unlock a Fast Travel Point / outpost you will need to mooch through the story of The First Descendant which will lead you to various points on the map. When you reach a new region for the first time it will unlock its location to Fast Travel too whenever you feel the need to return there.

A survival horror video game fan reached out to the original voice actor of zombie-survival adventure Dead Rising, to ask why Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster, announced last week, was using a different voice instead of the first person to play photojournalist Frank West. After Capcom announced the 2006 classic would be updated for modern hardware, fans noticed, in the trailer shown last week, that the voice actor seemed to be different.

The simple answer is, well, Capcom didn’t contact Terence J. Rotolo to ask him back to the role. Which is a shame, considering Rotolo said one of the great, gravelly, grizzled lines in video gaming  — “I’ve covered wars, you know” — in the first Dead Rising, published in 2006. “Iconic” is an overused word in pop culture and marketing, but here, it might actually fit, considering how this has been referenced, if not turned into a meme.

But if Splinter Cell (Ubisoft) moved on from Michael Ironside as the voice of Sam Fisher, and Metal Gear (Konami) could part ways with David Hayter, then, yeah, it it stands to reason that Capcom might go in a different direction for the re-release of its genre-defining classic, 18 years after the original launched.

Got some news about the Dead Rising Remake. The reason why TJ Rotolo is not returning as Frank West’s voice is simply because Capcom DID NOT contact him. It’s probably because TJ is union and Capcom have a bias against anyone Union oriented. It’s a shame. But what can we do. So… pic.twitter.com/1ztyGK4oK8

— FrankByDaylight (@FrankByDaylight) June 28, 2024

“FrankByDaylight” speculates that Capcom didn’t bring back Rotolo because he has a union card with SAG-AFTRA and that necessarily comes with a higher price tag, plus other conditions on contracted work.

Who’s to say. This is supposedly a remaster, not a remake, which makes the decision to switch voices for the lead actor a little unusual. But contracts and licenses can be stubborn things, even two decades later.

In any case, Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster launches Sept. 19 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC via Steam, and Xbox Series X.

Since The First Descendant is a very social experience, you’ll likely want to get in with your friends and all progress toward that max level together.

However, with any new game in this day in age, the partying up process can be different that what you’re used to.

Here, we’ll take you through what you need to know on how to join your friends in The First Descendant so you can play through this new looter shooter together.

How to play with friends in The First Descendant

So, to join friends in The First Descendant, let’s run through the whole partying up process from start to finish.

Your first task is to wrap up the tutorial and make it to the main hub of Albion. You won’t be able to play with your friends before this so don’t worry, you’re not locked out of some co-op action.

After making it to Albion, here are the steps you need to follow to get your friends added:

Open you menu and navigate to the Social tab
Press on the chip icon on the left to open your friends list and add the people you want to play with
After adding, you can then select the ones you want to and invite them into your party

If you’re the one that is receiving the request, you need to again go into the Social tab and you should be able to see any requests in this area.

You can also invite someone directly to your party if you find them in Albion by interacting with them but it is unlikely to find your friends this way.

With all of that in mind, now you can party up with whoever is on your list and get to taking down some bosses together.

One thing to note here is that all loot is individual so you don’t need to be at loggerheads with your friends for who is taking the best gear, always nice to know there’s no further competition.

To be the envy of your party though, check out what Twitch Drops you can get, as well as securing any beta rewards if you managed to get into the playtests.

Super Mario and Baskin Robbins have teamed up to bring the ice cream of gaming dreams to Japanese stores.

Since their debut in the mid-1980s, Mario and Luigi have been a beloved part of the gaming world, bringing charm to hundreds of collaborations. Now those Japanese summer days and nights will be festooned with the pipe-plunging Italian plumbers for a limited time.

Super Mario ice cream comes to Japan

The frozen treat brand will run the Nintendo-themed collab across Japan until July 31 this summer. Baskin Robins posted the collaboration across their social media channels:

お好きなアイスクリームが8コ選べる
「ハテナブロック アイスクリームセット」

Flavors include the Super Mushroom Cola Float, Superstar Double Grape, and even pipe-themed containers for the frozen wares. Other items include question block boxes, a 3D Luigi’s Mansion ice cream cake, and a Super Mario Variety Box in a four, six, eight, or twelve-piece edition.

Baskin Robins also promoted the limited-time collaboration across their YouTube channel, showing off more of the Mario-themed deserts:

Super Mario no stranger to collaborations

Bedsheets, fancy dress costumes, LEGO, and more have had their adventures emblazoned over a retail item. To boost sales, celebrate their legendary status as gaming icon royalty, and make a coin or two in the process.

The Mario X LEGO collaboration has been fruitful for the brickmaker. Over the past few years, a range of building toys have been released, and as we reported, more are set to be available in his stores later this summer. Including:

Soda Jungle Maker Set, which includes a pink Shy Guy, a Wriggler, and a Pirhana Plant
Goombas’ Playground, which includes three Goombas
The Bowser Express Train, which is a train set that has a Hammer Bro and several other characters
King Boo’s Haunted Mansion, featuring King Boo and his mansion
Battle with Roy at Peach’s Castle, which has a catapult and a Chain Chomp

Gaming royalty Sonic is also involved in the LEGO collaboration, and the speedy electric hedgehog will have his own playsets for fans to put together.

Both gaming icons have started to take over the gaming cinematic universe. The Super Mario Bros. movie was a box office hit, and Sonic’s next film installment is hitting theatres in December.

Fans of Sonic can also get their hands on the Sonic X Shadow Collectors Edition, which will also be exclusive to Japanese stores. The bundle of gaming items includes a 12 cm Shadow figure, a 5 cm keychain with a Sonic and Shadow shoe, stickers, and an art book of the game.

After Figma’s new AI feature was called out for looking like Apple’s Weather app, the CEO Dylan Field has temporarily disabled it until they feel “confident” in standing behind its output.

The founder of NotBoring Software, Andy Allen, was the first to spot the similarities as he took to X to accuse Figma of ‘heavily’ training its tool on existing apps. The Figma CEO has denied the accusation in his response.

Figma AI looks rather heavily trained on existing apps.

This is a “weather app” using the new Make Designs feature and the results are basically Apple’s Weather app (left). Tried three times, same results. https://t.co/Ij20OpPCer pic.twitter.com/psFTV6daVD

— Andy Allen (@asallen) July 1, 2024

“Figma AI looks rather heavily trained on existing apps,” writes Andy Allen. He includes a side-by-side of Figma AI and Apple’s Weather app and says he tested the new tool three times and each output resulted in an almost carbon copy.

After, he issued a warning to any designers using the new ‘Make Design’ feature as he said “you may want to thoroughly check existing apps or modify the results heavily so that you don’t unknowingly land yourself in legal trouble.”

Figma CEO says accusations around data training are false

A day later, on July 2, Dylan Field replied to Allen’s comments. He said: “As we shared at Config last week – as well as on our blog, our website, and many other touchpoints – the Make Design feature is not trained on Figma content, community files or app designs.

“In other words, the accusations around data training in this tweet are false.”

— Dylan Field (@zoink) July 2, 2024

The new feature is by the collaborative design tool company Figma.

He says ‘Make Design’ uses off-the-shelf LLMs combined with design systems that have been commissioned to be used by these models. He explains how within hours of seeing the tweet by Allen, they identified the issue which was “related to the underlying design systems that were created.

“Ultimately it is my fault for not insisting on a better QA process for this work and pushing our team hard to hit a deadline for Config.”

The tool will be re-enabled when a full QA pass has been completed on the underlying design system. While a date for the second launch isn’t yet known, the founder teases it by saying ‘more soon.’

Media outlets based in South Korea have alleged that Korea Telecom targeted some of its customers with malware due to excessive use of peer-to-peer downloading tools.

The company set up a whole new division to develop, maintain, and distribute the malware, with the operation beginning in May 2020 it is claimed.

They believe the number of infected users of ‘web hard drives’ reached 600,000 at one point.

The malware involved was allegedly inserted into the Grid Program which is the code that enables KT users to exchange data in a peer-to-peer method.

The file exchange services were said to have stopped working which left users complaining about the issue on bulletin boards online. Other reported problems include the creation of unknown folders, hiding downloaded files, and some PCs not working at all.

The issue is believed to have lasted almost five months.

Malware refers to any software that is intentionally designed to cause disruption to a computer or server. It’s commonly referred to as viruses, worms, spyware, ransomware, adware, and Trojan viruses.

A representative from the Grid Program told the media that only the people using KT’s internet lines were affected, TechNadu said.

Police get involved in Korean telco drama

After the media started reporting on the supposed issue, the police soon got involved and conducted an investigation that found the source was one of KT’s data centers, known as the Bundang IDC Center.

As such, the Gyeonggi Southern District Office allegedly believes that KT may have violated the Communications Secrets Protection Act and the Information and Communications Network Act.

The initial investigation concluded after four years and led to the CEO of the telecom company quitting. This is one of the largest telecommunications companies in South Korea.

In November 2023, it was said the police had identified and referred 13 people for prosecution including some employees and its parent companies’ employees at the time.

An additional investigation began in May 2024 and remains ongoing.

Dungeons and Dragons rulesets are intrinsically linked with many video games that we play today – the most recent and obvious of which was Baldur’s Gate 3, which was largely based on the D&D 5th Edition of its rules.

A new set of core rules for 2024 how is set to change up a lot of things that are bound to make their way into our screens at some point in the future.

The D&D YouTube channel has released a short five-minute-long video explaining how crafting – something we use in just about any RPG we ever play will change in the new 2024 Core Rulebook which is set to release in the middle of September and be ordered now.

Crafting changes will come as part of a re-examining of equipment rules completely and aims to explain exactly what each item of equipment does mechanically, to save any Dungeon Master ad hoc decisions. Why have those when you can just simplify things in general?

The video, which is well worth a few minutes of your time, sees D&D’s lead rules designer explain the new system and how it will work with the equipment you may come across on your travels. You will be able to use specific tools to craft specific items including Potions of Healing.

While these rule changes will take time to be officially adopted into any new games that use D&D rule sets, some of the base ideas may come through quickly. A lot of games use the “idea” of a Dungeons and Dragons ruleset as a base for a lot of what they do, but don’t implement them lock, stock, and barrel.

We will likely see some of the ideas that arrive in the 2024 Core rules in our RPGs quicker than we may imagine and hopefully, they will make just that little bit more user-friendly.

The startup Abnormal Security, which uses artificial intelligence to prevent email attacks, is set to be valued at $5 billion in an upcoming funding round, according to two sources.

The Californian company previously reported crossing the $100 million mark in annual recurring revenue in 2023, five years after it was initially founded.

Business Insider says two people who are familiar with the deal have quoted the new valuation ahead of a new round. Although, it’s not yet known how much funding they will be raising and the terms of the deal could still change.

A huge $210 million was previously raised in 2022 in Series C venture funding in a deal that was led by Insight Partners alongside support from Greylock Partners, Menlo Ventures, and The Syndicate Group. A total of $374 million has been raised in venture funding.

At the time of the last round, the company was valued at $4 billion. The AI startup hasn’t commented on the valuation.

What is AI startup Abnormal Security?

Headquartered in San Francisco, the startup focuses on cloud-native email security and was founded by Evan Reiser and Sanjay Jeyakumar.

On LinkedIn, their overview reads: “Abnormal provides total protection against the widest range of email attacks including phishing, malware, ransomware, social engineering, executive impersonation, supply chain compromise, internal account compromise, spam, and graymail.”

Now more than ever, its services are gaining attention as hackers are using increasingly sophisticated attacks.

It was just a few months ago when Microsoft suffered a password spray attack which allowed the hackers to “access a very small percentage” of the company’s corporate accounts. This included members of its senior leadership team and employees in cybersecurity, legal, and other functions.

Other hacks have taken place over the last few years, with key emergency services being disrupted at times of need.

Aside from the need to bolster security, the AI industry has seen a huge rise in interest too as many startups are starting to receive significant investment.

For example, Elon Musk’s xAI raised $6 billion in May after being valued at $24 billion and the French startup Mistral AI secured a deal at a $6 billion valuation in June.

The First Descendant has got off to a bit of a flyer despite its mixed reviews and bugs that the devs have quickly had to patch and make up for.

Even though it is just a few days old, this initial period will be classed as its pre-season, undergoing a little bit of testing before things start to really heat up and we get into Season 1 proper. But when will that be and what might it bring? Will you even still be playing it by then?

A benchmark is the recent XDefiant which underwent a similar pre-season before its Season 1 launch this week and interest has been renewed in that, so it is possible. Let’s have a look at what we know so far.

When is The First Descendant Season 1?

The devs have shared a roadmap that states late August is when we can expect The First Descendant’s first season but there is no specific date at this stage. However, using cunning detective work we can take the time from the pre-season, work out when it ends, and extrapolate that this is August 29th, which under any terms is late August. So make a mark on your calender, as that’s when we think Season 1 will drop.

What’s new in The First Descendant Season 1?

We can probably expect a host of balance changes from information that the pre-season throws up. Weapon buffs and nerfs and the like. New content-wise wise we have been told there will be a new Descendant (would that make them the Secon Descendant? Probably not) but there is nothing further on them at this point.

According to the roadmap, we will also get a new Ultimate Descentant and a skin and a few other usuals. We’d expect all of this to be fleshed out more after things have settled down from the game’s global launch.

Since there are multiple characters, or Descendants, in The First Descendant, you’ll probably want to get to a point where you unlock them all.

This will allow you to get the most out of the game, testing out all of the different abilities and playstyles of each.

Valby is a character that a bunch of players are after, similar to that of Bunny, and with this guide, we’ll reveal a couple of different ways for how to unlock her.

How to unlock Valby in The First Descendant

There are two possible ways to unlock Valby in The First Descendant, each varying in the time required.

The first way you can get Valby is simply by purchasing her using Caliber. This will set you back a hefty 600 Caliber which is a significant amount, especially in the early game.

If you do have enough though, just head the store and purchase her for instant use.

However, if you’re into the grind and would rather play the game in order to secure some new characters, you can do that and you won’t need to add any real world funds to your account.

Like the other Descendants, you will need to locate various Research Materials along with the all-important Code to make Valby yours.

Here are all of the Research Materials required:

Valby Enhanced Cells (1)

422x Repton
571x Superfluid
48x Data Processing Neural Circuit
Valby Enhanced Cell Blueprint
200,000 Gold

Valby Stabilizer (1)

246x Monad Shard
239x Compound Coating Material
40x Negative Ion Particle
Valby Stabilizer Blueprint
200,000 Gold

Valby Spiral Catalyst (1)

519x Metal Accelerant
386x Hardener
32x Encrypted Neural Circuit
1x Valby Sprial Catalyst Blueprint

Valby Code (1)

Intercept Battle: Common Devourer for Amorphous Material Pattern 032
Intercept Battle: Common Pyromaniac for Amorphous Material Pattern 036
Sterile Land Normal: Void Fusion Reactor in Sterile Land Rockfall Zone
Sterile Land Hard: Abyssal Void Fusion Reactor in Sterile Land Repository

400,000 Credits

Once you’ve gathered all of the above, simply head back to Anais and exchange them for Valby. Remember, it will take a bunch of time for this to be completed, so don’t expect to be using her right away.

In the meantime, you can watch your favorite streamers to get Twitch Drops, or maybe just get to heading toward that max level.
