Cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has unveiled a new application designed to streamline wallet management and enhance user experience, particularly for crypto newcomers.
The app, announced on Thursday, allows users to oversee multiple on-chain wallets and activities from a single platform. The new app enables users to connect and manage multiple wallets, perform various transactions including buying, swapping, sending, staking, and minting coins, as well as interact with other users. Coinbase highlighted the current challenges faced by crypto users:
Today, many people use manual spreadsheets and need to open multiple browser tabs to track their assets holistically. Many people also manage several crypto wallets, and until now, achieving a comprehensive view of all their assets in one place has been a challenge.
The application will be accessible on both desktop and mobile devices, with compatibility extending to smart wallets. This move aligns with industry-wide efforts to simplify crypto management for less tech-savvy investors, following similar initiatives by other wallet providers like Exodus.
Coinbase’s big plans
For Coinbase, this app represents another step towards its ambition of becoming a “super app” akin to China’s WeChat. By broadening access and simplifying user experience, Coinbase aims to attract a wider audience to its ecosystem.
In June, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong cited Asia where “people have apps that they use [for] digital money in all kinds of areas of their life.” He said that he wants the firm he leads to offer something very similar:
I think that in Coinbase, this case, we want to be that super app, but it’s all going to be based on these decentralized protocols.
What is Coinbase?
Coinbase is a leading cryptocurrency exchange platform and financial services company. Founded in 2012, it provides a user-friendly interface for individuals and institutions to buy, sell, store, and trade various cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and many others.
Coinbase is known for its emphasis on regulatory compliance and security, which has helped it gain trust among both retail and institutional investors. The company went public on Nasdaq in April 2021, marking a significant milestone in the mainstream adoption of cryptocurrency services.

An OpenAI spokesperson has shared the company’s new 5-tier system for ranking its progress toward achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), reports Bloomberg.
The levels, which were announced by the company behind ChatGPT internally at an all-hands meeting before being shared externally, are designed to guide thinking about artificial intelligence (AI) and its capabilities as the company works to develop models with real reasoning capabilities.
Levels of AI on the path to artificial general intelligence
The levels in the system were outlined like this:
Tier 1 – Chatbots, AI with conversational language. This is where OpenAI believes their current GPT4 models are at currently
Tier 2 – Reasoners, human-level problem solving (described as having the reasoning capabilities of a person with a PhD but without any tools)
Tier 3 – Agents, systems that can take actions on a user’s behalf.
Tier 4 – Innovators, AI that can come up with its own innovations
Tier 5 – Organizations, AI that can do the work of an entire organization
AGI is the long-term goal for many companies involved in the AI arms race, including Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta.
While OpenAI believes they are currently at level 1, their spokesperson said they are on the cusp of reaching the second level, “Reasoners”.
During the all-hands meeting where the new levels were announced, OpenAI also demonstrated some new research centered around its GPT4 model, which they believe shows skills approaching human-level reasoning.
The levels, which were designed by OpenAI’s senior leadership team and executives, are not considered final. As the organization gathers feedback and additional input from its employees and investors, it may alter the levels and definitions over time to better fit the broader understanding of AI progress.
OpenAI’s stated mission is to develop “safe and beneficial artificial general intelligence for the benefit of humanity”, however, earlier this year the company effectively dissolved its safety-oriented Superalignment group after the departure of Chief Scientist and co-founder Ilya Sutskever. This has led to questions being raised about whether the company can truly live up to its mission statement.

Japan is responsible for so many of the greatest gaming moments in history, but stretching as far back as Puck-Man the titles of the games have often raised eyebrows and sometimes made us wonder out loud, ‘But why is it called that?’
Puck Man, better known these days as Pac Man makes sense. The main character is a bit like a puck in terms of shape. In fact, it makes more sense than Pac-Man unless you know that there is a Japanese phrase for gobbling something that is paku-paku (パクパク).
History tells us that that Puck Man was changed in the West because of fears of cabinets being vandalized with the P being changed to an F to create a wholly different game title, so Pac-Man it is.
Lost in translation
This is just one of the first examples of language becoming an issue when it comes to games arriving on our shores from the East. Since then we have had such a veritable feast of weird and wonderful game titles, that we never really stop and think about, and if we did it would probably just blow our minds.
Take 1995’s Super Nintendo tactics classic Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together. An amazing game from the eventual makers of Final Fantasy Tactics. A game everybody should seek out on an emulator, but what is it with that title?
From Fairy Fencer F Advent Dark Force to Melty Blood: Type Lumina this stuff makes no sense to our Western brains, but in truth, it adds to the mystique and er, exoticness (good word Paul, you should do this for a living) and is it really any different to Baldur’s Gate or Red Dead Redemption if you think about it?
Can I interest you in some more delicacies? How about Super Long Nose Goblin from Taito? Or Getter Love!! Panda Love Unit?
All games you should seek out, and not just for the name alone.
If you are a collector of weird game names the Melty Blood games are rich pickings. We already mentioned one above but Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code beats it hands down.
One of my favorites, mainly because to this day I can’t comprehend what it is supposed to mean is the 2008 Xbox classic Infinite Undiscovery, probably because it sounds like it should have some profound meaning but I am too stupid to get what it is. I have been trying for 16 years.
We often get name changes when a game crosses continents mainly for marketing reasons. Resident Evil’s original Japanese title is simply Biohazard, which there is nothing wrong with in the first place although Resident Evil is definitely cooler, while others you might expect to get a change such as Death Stranding or Metal Gear Solid become classics and nobody ever questions that the name sounds odd to Western ears. Solid Snake?
Some of this is down to translation but cultural differences make the most difference to titles. The way English as a language is used is perhaps a lot more flamboyant. In the west, we like to go for short, to-the-point titles that can easily be fit into conversion…”Have you played Skyrim?”
Skyrim, at face value, is a hugely boring title. It’s like calling your game Birmingham as it is just the name of the place where the game takes place, as was its predecessor Morrowind.
Western game titles tend to be straight to the point – Grand Theft Auto, Microsoft Flight Simulator, and so on. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to add a little flair to those as well?
We don’t get many ‘Charles Barkley, Shut Up and Jam’ type game titles anymore unfortunately – check out the tremendous effort on the graphic design of the font use below.
If you have spent any time in Japan titles such as all of the above start to make more sense. Once you get a feeling for how the language is used there it becomes fun, rather than just functional. And of course, translating any language word for word will always throw up unusual phrasing.
You can imagine the days of meetings when EA was prepping to change the name from FIFA to EAFC? The hours of focus groups and logo tweaks and changes, discussions about whether there should be a space between the EA and the FC – just Super Long Nose Goblin it mate. If it works it works. Go with it.
Ten of the strangest Japanese game titles
Here are ten games/game series worth seeking out for the ultimate gaming silly name
Bravely Default
Super Long Nose Goblin
Gravitational Dizziness: The Perturbation of Her Inner Space Caused by the Repatriation of the Upper Stratum

Violence Killer: Turok New Generation
G.A.S.P!! Fighters’ NEXTreme

Ten of the strangest Western game titles
And if you were fooled by all this into thinking it was just the Japanese that came up with crazy game names. Well, this list will fix that right up for you.

Representatives Rich McCormick and French Hill have introduced a resolution to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, calling on the United States government to classify the detention of leading crypto exchange Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan in Nigeria as a hostage situation.
The resolution, officially submitted on Wednesday by McCormick and co-sponsored by Hill, demands the immediate release of Gambaryan, a U.S. citizen. It highlights concerns about Gambaryan’s declining health in Kuje Prison and urges the U.S. government to declare him as “wrongfully detained by a foreign government.”
The congressmen warn that if Gambaryan’s case isn’t resolved by mid-July, his detention could be prolonged due to the court’s typical recess until September.
Gambaryan, Binance’s head of financial crime compliance and a former IRS agent, was detained in Nigeria in February along with colleague Nadeem Anjarwalla. They face money laundering charges, though tax-related accusations have been dropped. Anjarwalla escaped custody in March.
Binance exec’s health declines in Nigeria
The resolution emphasizes Gambaryan’s decade-long service with the IRS, during which he helped seize over $4 billion in illicit funds for the U.S. government. Rep. Hill, who visited Gambaryan in prison last month, expressed concern about the executive’s status:
After visiting recently with Tigran at Kuje Prison in Nigeria, I noted that his health is deteriorating. I am proud to join my friend and Mr. Gambaryan’s Congressman, Rep. Rich McCormick, in leading this resolution and sending a signal to the Nigerian government that he must be immediately granted a release, the remaining charges dropped, and return home to America where he belongs.
Both Hill and McCormick view the detention as a violation of Gambaryan’s rights and a serious injustice. McCormick said:
The continued detention of Tigran Gambaryan in Nigeria is a clear violation of his rights and a grave injustice. We urge the Nigerian government to immediately release him and provide him with the necessary medical care and due process rights. The United States Government must do everything in its power to secure the release of one of our citizens wrongfully detained abroad.
This resolution follows a June letter signed by 16 members of Congress, urging the White House to address Gambaryan’s imprisonment urgently, stressing the need for swift action to ensure his safety and preservation of life.

Nintendo Switch Online is receiving an update in the form of three new Game Boy Advance games from the Starfy franchise which have previously only been released in Japan.
The games, Densetsu no Starfy 1, 2, and 3, are underwater aquatic platformers where the player controls a starfish through multiple levels. “Run, jump, and swim through underwater levels,” proclaims the announcement video. The games will release on Nintendo Switch Online on July 12.
The games have an adorable and distinct graphical style which led to the games being popular on release in Japan. However, the games were never translated or exported to Western audiences. The versions being added to Nintendo Switch Online are the original untranslated versions.
The response to the announcement has been extremely positive, with many fans discussing their enjoyment of the one Starfy game that did make it to Western audiences. The Legendary Starfy was released on Nintendo DS in 2009.
One comment on the YouTube video says “Boy, these past handful of NSO batches have contained either fun surprises or genuinely solid games. Three Starfy games straight from Japan certainly continue that trend. In both ways IMO, but certainly in the fun surprise way.”
The addition of the Starfy games suggests that Nintendo is getting comfortable with adding games that were previously not considered suitable for Western audiences, opening up the path to other Japanese classics for many players to experience for the first time. Starfy makes a good starting point because the lack of translation will not affect the enjoyment of the games significantly, and the single Western release in the series was popular. However, there are many previously Japanese exclusives that we could see added to the Switch Online over time.
Nintendo Switch Online is a great deal for retro gamers and nostalgia fans
Nintendo continues to expand the selection of games on offer to Switch Online subscribers. For just $19.99 annually for the base membership or $49.99 for the expanded membership, players gain access to several hundred classic games through Switch Online, with more being added frequently.
Classic racing game F-Zero: Maximum Velocity was added in March. April saw the addition of three extremely retro games, including two from the Super Famicon – puzzle game Wrecking Crew ’98, multiplayer brawler Amazing Hebereke, and auto-scrolling shooter Super R-Type.

As with most multiplayer games this day in age, The First Descendant features a few different currencies that you’ll need to acquire in order to level up gear, as well as buy new items in the store.
Once currency that most players are after is Caliber as it is the key to unlocking important loot and even new characters.
We’ll reveal how to get Caliber in The First Descendant so you can get to using it to purchase what you’d like.
The First Descendant Caliber: How to get
Caliber in The First Descendant is unfortunately a premium currency meaning that it can only be acquired through putting real money in the game.
This can be done in two ways – purchasing Caliber directly from the in-game store, or purchasing the premium battle pass in which some tiers contain Caliber.
Looking initially at simply buying Caliber, it costs roughly what you’d expect when compared to other games such as Apex Legends or Fortnite.
There are six bundles available, starting with 250 Caliber which costs $4.99 (£3.98) and finishing at 5,750 Caliber that sets you back a whopping $99.99 (£79.99).
As you’d expect, the more you spend the better the ‘discount’ on Caliber earned so technically it is better value to put more money in.
Here are all of the currently available Caliber bundles:
250 Caliber – $4.99 (£3.98)
520 Caliber – $9.99 (£7.99)
1,060 Caliber – $19.99 (£15.98)
2,750 Caliber – $49.99 (£39.98)
3,920 Caliber – $69.99 (£57.98)
5,750 Caliber – $99.99 (£79.99)
Now, if you’d rather not drop a whole load of cash and want some extra goodies to boot, you can purchase the Preseason Premium Battle Pass to secure some Caliber.
This will cost $10 and if you level it up to its fullest you’ll gain 300 Caliber, as well as a lot of other great cosmetics and items that’ll enhance your overall experience.
300 Caliber is enough to unlock some of the characters, or you could use it on other, more endgame loot like Crystallization Catalysts.

In news that shouldn’t really surprise many people, it seems EA has decided on the footballer that will grace the cover of the new EAFC 25 game due out at the end of September.
After Erling Haaland’s breakout Premier League season saw him bag the FC24 cover slot, it is increasingly looking like FC25 will have La Liga’s breakout star this season, England’s Jude Bellingham. Bellingham, who is currently preparing for Sunday’s European Championship final with Spain, where the Real Madrid star will come up against many of his teammates and weekly opponents, has got the gig and will adorn the cover of the Standard Edition of the game according to leaks on X.
Bellingham’s trademark arm-out goal celebration would seem the logical choice for a cover image with the pose being so recognizable as the footballing prodigy from Stourbridge near Birmingham having shot to fame at Borussia Dortmund before his big-money move to Madrid at the start of last season.

Nobody predicted the impact he would have on Spanish football where he has shot to megastar status playing 42 games, scoring 23 times and adding a further 10 assists to those numbers.
The dates and prices for EA FC25 were recently leaked and we will be able to bring you much more information on the game shortly as we have spent the last two days in Vancouver with EA Sports and FC25 getting the lowdown on all the game’s new features and changes from last year’s version.
At this stage, the Bellingham news is only rumor and leak and is yet to be confirmed by Electronic Arts but it would be a major surprise if he is not in the reckoning given the season he has had, and may yet still cap off with an International trophy this weekend.

In a live-streamed update on the tech company this week, Elon Musk revealed that Neuralink, of which he is CEO, plans to perform the second human implant trial sometime within “the next week or so.”
The surgery was originally meant to take place in June but the intended trial participant experienced some health problems which delayed the procedure.
The update, which consisted of Musk and other Neuralink executives live streaming on X, also mentioned Neuralink’s current sole human participant. Although the implant in Noland Arbaugh suffered a hardware failure when several small wires retracted, causing a reduced capacity of the device, it has been described by the company as “more or less very stable.”
Arland gave a rave review about the implant and described it as like having “an aim-bot” for gaming in his head.
Improved version of @Neuralink update
pic.twitter.com/zk3cdbMtEC
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 11, 2024
Making improvements to mitigate the risk of failure
Executive Dongjin ‘DJ’ Seo said during the live stream that “once you do the brain surgery it takes some time for the tissues to come in and anchor the threads in place, and once that happens, everything has been stable.”
After the detachment, Arbaugh saw some reduction in capacity through the device. However, Neuralink was able to make some software adjustments to increase its functionality, modifying the algorithm used by the device and restoring the lost capacity.
The team discussed new mitigation measures they will take to reduce the risk of this thread retraction occurring in future trials. “In upcoming implants, our plan is to sculpt the surface of the skull very intentionally to minimize the gap under the implant … that will put it closer to the brain and eliminate some of the tension on the threads,” said Neuralink’s head of neurosurgery, Matthew MacDougall.
Though there has only been one participant in the trial so far, with another planned soon, Musk stated during the Neuralink update that he hopes to see numbers in the high single digits by the end of the year.
After the live-streamed update, Musk went on to make some more outlandish claims in posts on X. He said during the update that the device would enable “people who have lost limbs will be able to move their new prosthetic limbs faster than they could have ever been able to before they lost the limb,” later adding in a post “I think cybernetic superpowers are likely in the future”.
He also stated that paralysis is a “tough problem, but ultimately solvable,” and that controlling epilepsy is “one of the future applications” of Neuralink. It is unclear at present what, if any, research has been done into these applications of the device.

Stamps from around the world be cut off old envelopes and would be prized assets in a collection. Some shops even used to sell random packs of stamps in the UK. So why the history lesson?
The UK’s Royal Mail, which issues new stamps regularly to honor special occasions is to release a super-cool set of Dungeons and Dragons stamps to commemorate the 50th anniversary of D&D.
