Microsoft’s gaming arm has now teamed up with the film franchise in anticipation of the new Deadpool & Wolverine movie which will reprise Ryan Reynold’s character.

Microsoft, a global name in technology, has closed down its diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) team.

According to Business Insider, which viewed correspondence sent out to thousands of employees, Microsoft no longer views DEI as “business critical.”

A team leader at the global computing company said the move was due to “changing business needs,” but internal colleagues and onlookers have disagreed with the company-wide decision.

Microsoft lays off DEI team

DEI is a sometimes controversial part of companies’ policies to promote healthy working spaces for employees. Since the tragic murder of George Floyd in 2020, Microsoft has pledged to do more to promote DEI and address racial injustice, saying:

“This is not a one-time event. It will require real work and focus. We will listen and learn. We will take feedback and we will adjust. But it starts with each of us making a commitment to do the work, to help drive change, and to act with intention.”

Business Insider saw the recent email, which was sent to thousands of employees, and stated, “True systems-change work associated with DEI programs everywhere is no longer business critical or smart as it was in 2020.”

This is quite a contrast amid the company’s ongoing commitments. For example, Microsoft stated that it would double the number of black leadership roles in the tech leader’s workforce by 2025.

In 2021, Microsoft published, Racial Equity Initiative: A year of progress on our commitments. The statement at that time, a year on from Floyd’s murder, said:

“We have been unwavering in our broader, ongoing focus to advance diversity and strengthen inclusion at Microsoft, we also understand that we have the opportunity to be more precise in where we accelerate progress, and these commitments are holding us accountable to that.”

So Microsoft’s footing has changed on DEI, but company spokesperson Jeff Jones said, “Our D&I commitments remain unchanged. Our focus on diversity and inclusion is unwavering and we are holding firm on our expectations, prioritizing accountability, and continuing to focus on this work.”

There are no official commitments regarding what this work entails in the wake of the layoffs or how Microsoft will handle DEI’s future going forward.

“At Microsoft we know that we can only achieve our mission when everyone is included. We approach these efforts with a commitment to be candid about our progress and accountable to our ambitions.”

The move to close down the DEI team at Microsoft comes a month after the company’s ‘Radical Joy’ celebration of LGBTQ+ employees. So, it remains to be seen what inclusionary calendar events will look like a year from now, with no set team tasked to promote diversity, inclusion, and equality at Microsoft.

ChatGPT might have revolutionized technology as we know it, but for the average person, the generative AI tool and its parent company can seem enigmatic. 

Whos behind one of the most game-changing consumer tech products we’ve seen so far this century?

Who created ChatGPT?

ChatGPT was created by American AI research company OpenAI.

The firm is arguably the most famous AI research and development company in the space. While its flagship product ChatGPT burst onto the scene in 2022, OpenAI has been around since December 2015, and was co-founded by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others.

Altman has served as CEO of the company since 2013 — save for an awkward few days in 2023 where he was briefly fired from the position before being reinstated.

Up until 2019, OpenAI was a non-profit organization, but it is now for-profit and worth an estimated $80 billion.

How does ChatGPT work?

The company’s artificial intelligence model has become renowned for its capacity to understand and respond to textual instructions. The chatbot uses natural language processing (NLP) GPT-4 (generative pre-trained transformer) technology — but “generative” is the keyword here. 

The purpose of generative AI models like ChatGPT is to create something from a prompt. That prompt could be to explain the definition of a word, to brainstorm related ideas, or even tell you a story or write a poem— ChatGPT can do it all. 

Who owns ChatGPT?

As mentioned, ChatGPT is owned by tech company OpenAI.

The CEO of OpenAI in turn is Sam Altman. Born in 1985, Altman is a Stanford University dropout who has been part of Open AI since the start.

Technically, OpenAI was founded by Altman, Greg Brockman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. But different people comprise the board of the non-profit, OpenAI Inc, and Open AI the business.

At the time of the launch, the company’s board of non-profit OpenAI Inc included Altman, Brockman, Sutskever, Schulman, and Zaremba. Meanwhile, additional members of the non-profit board specifically included Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner.

As for Open AI’s executive board, it consists of Altman as President, Brockman as co-founder, Sutskever as Chief Scientist. Other executive employees of OpenAI include  Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap.

It’s also worth noting that Musk left OpenAI before it all kicked off in November 2022, partly to make his own AI bot Grok and partly to focus, presumably, on his takeover of the platform X which was then referred to as Twitter.

Is OpenAI owned by Microsoft?

A common misconception is that OpenAI is owned by Microsoft, but while the two companies work closely together as partners, OpenAI isn’t a subsidiary of Microsoft.

Instead, Microsoft is what’s known as a key strategic investor in the company. The tech giant first invested in OpenAI in 2019, with a $1 billion investment, and invested a further $13 billion as of April 2023.

“We formed our partnership with OpenAI around a shared ambition to responsibly advance cutting-edge AI research and democratize AI as a new technology platform,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in a statement at the time.

“In this next phase of our partnership, developers and organizations across industries will have access to the best AI infrastructure, models, and toolchain with Azure to build and run their applications.”

When was ChatGPT released?

ChatGPT was released as a public demo on November 30, 2022. Back then, the humble chatbot was limited to answering questions with text-based responses, but even that was enough to cause a stir and lead to the AI model going mega-viral.

According to Greg Brockman, who was OpenAI’s then-CEO, the app surpassed 1 million users in just five days. Just two months later, a UBS study (via CBNC) reported that the application had approximately 100 million monthly active users.

So, the February 2023 worldwide release of the subscription-based ChatGPT Plus felt like the next logical step for the company, as did the release of their updated ChatGPT model, GPT-4, the following month.

When is ChatGPT-5 being released?

An exact ChatGPT-5 release date hasn’t been specified, but we know that OpenAI is in the process of training the GPT-5 model. Back in February, during an appearance at the Dubai World Governments Summit (WGS), Altman said that ChatGPT-5 is “going to be smarter” than previous language models.

“It’s not like that this model is going to get a little bit better, it’s because we’re going to make them all smarter, it’s going to be better across the board,” he said.

The current ChatGPT Plus subscription is $20 a month, but it’s entirely possible that once Chat GPT-5 is released, Chat GPT-4 in turn will become more affordable and more widely used.

No Man’s Sky is an incredible game. Let’s get that out of the way from the off. The much-vaunted redemption arc of the sci-fi classic, from its ropy launch to the outstanding space game that it is today, does not come close to telling the full story of what Hello Games has done with NMS over the years.

If you are looking for a premium example of gaming dedication look no further. Constant updates and content additions to this game show that No Man’s Sky is an absolute labor of love for all involved and is similar to the work going on with Baldur’s Gate 3 I talked about earlier today.

And with all the changes over the years, I would say No Man’s Sky is probably the game I have re-installed the most in decades. From moving to PC to PC to laptops, to freeing up space and relenting and reinstalling, No Man’s Sky has been a gaming companion to me pretty much since it came out. In all honesty, I even enjoyed it when it first came out and everybody was slating it.

Now, the announcement has just dropped for the No Man’s Sky Worlds Part 1 update and this time the team is going all in on making things look nicer. It’s a beautiful game already but as time moves on Hello Games just keeps moving the bar to keep up with technology.

New water and cloud technology are both going to make the planets we land on feel and look totally different, adding spoonfuls more realism and alien eye candy to the mix.

Dynamic weather such as rain and fog are also coming and a watch of the in-depth video suggests that a lot of these new systems are coming in directly from the other game Hello has in the pipeline, Light No Fire. We’re not complaining.

Most big NMS updates come alongside a new Expedition to take part in and World’s is no exception. We are getting a Starship Troopers-inspired combat mission. With the success Helldivers 2 has had, well why not? It looks equally great.

The fact this update is Part 1 is perhaps the most exciting part. If this is only the beginning we can look forward to many more years in No Man’s Sky as it becomes perhaps one of the greatest videogames ever made.

Hooded Horse has been a publisher that established a rep for some excellent titles of late. Manor Lords will be the one that springs to mind from all its publicity but Empires of the Undergrowth and Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic are both games that have taken a fair few hours from my life over the past couple of years. And when you throw in Against the Storm into the mix, it’s a much longer time.

Now, Whiskerwood looks as though it could be the next to rob me of family time and you try to build up a safe haven for all your little mouse citizens and keep the oppressive paw of your cat overlords off your neck as best you can.

Sort of like a sinister 1984 meets Tom & Jerry if you will.

Whiskerwood has just launched its announcement trailer which you can watch below and if you are into this sort of thing I’d be amazed if the next thing you do is not to Steam WIshlist it immediately.

Beyond the elements of resource management and settlement building, we are also getting automation in a tip of the hat towards the hardcore strategy fans of Factorio and those types of games.

The mice are tasked by their feline dominators to tame the Whiskerwood for them and time will tell what the punishments for failure are, but the wording suggests that the cats are not the friendly type.

Whiskerwood’s Steam page tells us we will need to, “Carve mountains, traverse seas, and explore untamed new lands as you build grand cities – the ingenuity of the humble mouse is on full display in Whiskerwood as you establish elaborate automation systems to efficiently run complex production chains, all while dealing with the oppressive demands of your cat overlords.”

Tragically we have no launch date for Whiskerwood yet, merely a Coming Soon but the video and gifs on the Steam page at least seem to point to the fact that it looks quite far along, so hopefully we wil not have long to wait.

Best games in the PlayStation Summer Sale

Elden Ring

We kind of have to start with this one because Elden Ring is back in vogue, but there is a chance you have never played it. Now with the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC out as well it is just about the most perfect Soulslike you will ever test yourself with. It is 30% off across all regions, bringing it to around the £35-$40 mark, and is well worth it, with the caveat that not everybody likes a Soulslike. If you prefer your games more casual, move further down the line.

F1 24

It didn’t have the most auspicious of starts but hard work has been quickly carried out to make F124 one of the best racing games of the year, and if you are a follower of Formula 1 but were put off by the previous AAA price tag, you can now pick it up for a massive 40% discount across regions.

Jedi Survivor

If you feel the need to hone your Jedi skills ahead of the end of year’s big Star Wars follow-up then the excellent Jedi Survivor is running at 55% off across all regions bringing it down to a nicely palatable price that is well worth it.

Lego Star Wars – The Skywalker Saga

This is one of our favorite games in the last couple of years and perfectly re-captured both the original charm of the older Lego games and the Star Wars franchise to boot. It’s a fantastic game too if you have younger players in the household and it is at an unbeatable 75% off during the sale.

Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves made a big splash after it walked the plank from being an Xbox exclusive over to the PlayStation. It’s multiplayer and a huge amount of fun with bundles of content. The Standard edition is currently seeing a 30% reduction in its RRP

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader

If you are looking for a sci-fi RPG to get stuck into, here’s one you may have missed towards the end of last year that is well worth spending the time and money on. Rogue Trader is 35% off across all its editions and DLCs right now.

Conan Exiles

This is a game you probably won’t see in many lists but if you like survival games and base building you absolutely need to save the 60% right now and add it to your library immediately. Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth twin pack

An Arma III page? In 2024, have you lost your actual minds you may well be saying, and you might have a point if you have been playing the hardcore mil-sim for many a year, but, and this is for all the veterans as well, half a million people just bought Arma III in the Steam Summer Sale – that’s half a million Private Pyle’s running around the show with no clue what they are doing, and that is bad for all of us.

If you are new however to Arma III, hello. You are the future of the military and we are here to learn. From now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first and last words out of your filthy sewers will be ‘Sir.’ Do you maggots understand that?

Okay, enough of the Full Metal Jacket obsession – so you have bought Arma II because it is amazing, however, you have booted it up and do not have the first clue what to do.

The best way of thinking about ARMA is that it is a bit like a flight simulator. A ton of controls exist and your brain tricks you into thinking you need them all when in reality, at the start at least, you can get by just learning to take off and whizz about the sky a bit. You don’t need to know how to run an emergency landing pattern in Microsoft Flight Simulator to have fun, and the same rules apply here.

Get to Bootcamp

The ARMA 3 Bootcamp is – much like in Full Metal Jacket, the best place to learn to be a virtual soldier and you can find it via the Learn section in the in-game menu but basically you want to:

Complete the Single Player Campaign – this will get you accustomed to the controls you need to know at the beginning, and also relieve the frustration of being wiped out almost immediately.
VR Training – no, you don’t need to don a helmet here, you simply go through a series of training exercises in a Holodeck-type environment.
Multi-player Bootcamp – here you will find real-world Arma vets willing to help out and train you in the ways of the world. Most people who do this are alright, so be nice to them and they will be nice back.
Watch YouTube vids – ARMA III is not a new game so there are countless amazing tutorials you can watch when you get a minute and really get a feel for what you will be coming up against.
Field manual – and when you are stuck, or just simply cannot remember a control, open the Field Manual from the main menu and you will get tips and control information as a refresher.
