Adobe has just brought major AI-powered updates to Illustrator and Photoshop, as it officially integrates its artificial intelligence model Firefly.

Announced on Tuesday (July 23) the new releases aim to “accelerate creative workflows, save pros time, and empower designers to realize their visions faster.”

These elements are all powered by the Firefly Vector Model (beta) and the Firefly Image 3 Model and the update has already been put into action as everyone should be able to access it this week.

The Firefly-related features include Generative Shape Fill, Dimension Tool, Mockup, Text to Pattern, Contextual Taskbar, and more general performance enhancement tools in Illustrator.

For Photoshop, AI elements are now included in the Selection Brush Tool, Generate Image, Adjustment Brush Tool, and other workflow measures.

The senior vice president of digital media at Adobe Ashley Still said these features should “maximize productivity and accelerate workflows across ideation, design, and production.

“Adobe’s new innovations in Illustrator and Photoshop are built directly into designers’ existing workflows, offering new ways to create and helping them to work faster and focus on what they do best – drawing, designing and bringing their creative visions to life.”

What are Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator’s new AI features?

Adobe Firefly is the technology company’s generative machine learning model which became part of the Creative Cloud offering upon its release in March 2023.

One of its most notable elements is its text-to-image generator capabilities which are now added to Photoshop. Like with competitor models, a prompt is needed and then the tool will spit out an AI image matching your description.

Also new to Photoshop is Generative Fill which is where images can be generated and missing elements or backgrounds filled in or even vector outlines created.

Enhance Detail in Generative Fill in Photoshop delivers greater sharpness and detail in large size image formats.

Smaller changes have been made to current tools too.

Mockup in Illustrator delivers the ability to easily create high-quality visual prototypes of art on objects like product packaging, apparel and more by automatically adjusting the art to fit the curves and edges of the real-life object.
Dimension tool in Illustrator helps designers easily plot precise sizing to projects in a few clicks for packaging design, architectural drawings, fashion patterns and more.
Retype in Illustrator helps designers conveniently convert static text to live, editable text and identify the perfect font for projects.
Enhanced selection capabilities in Illustrator including the new Enclosed Rectangular Marquee Selection helps designers select objects more precisely and with more precision, which is especially useful in intricate and crowded designs.
Enhanced Pan and Zoom capabilities in Illustrator deliver faster and smoother performance so designers can navigate highly complex documents with speed and ease – up to 10 times faster with scalability from 3.13% to 64,000%.
Contextual Taskbar speeds up workflows with a menu that presents relevant next steps in the user’s design process.
Selection Brush Tool in Photoshop makes selecting, compositing and applying filters intuitive.

Alphabet will be spending an extra $5 billion on its self-driving company Waymo.

The parent company of Google has committed to a new ‘multi-year investment’ which was announced by chief officer Ruth Porat during a second-quarter earnings call.

“This new round of funding, which is consistent with recent annual investment levels, will enable Waymo to continue to build the world’s leading autonomous driving technology company.”

The California-based Waymo was formerly known as the Google Self-Driving Car Project and is referred to as the world’s first autonomous ride-hailing service.

The Co-CEO Tekedra N Mawakana took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the news and her gratitude, writing: “Alphabet has committed up to $5B to Waymo.

“We are grateful for their immense vote of confidence in our team and recognizing the amazing progress we’ve made with our technology, product, and commercialization efforts.”

Porat also said Google will be focusing on improving overall efficiencies in its ‘other bets’ segment. This segment includes Google Ventures, the drone company Wing, the research organization Verily, and the biotechnology company Calico.

“Waymo is an important example of this, with its technical leadership coupled with progress on operational performance,” said the executive.

On the call, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly said how the company is now delivering well over 50,000 paid rides per week. This number was also noted in Waymo’s announcement blog post about expanding in San Francisco.

It isn’t yet known how the $5 billion will be spent, but Alphabet’s 10-Q form could have more details when this is officially filed.

What is Waymo?

Waymo is a vehicle service where people can order a car to take them to their destination and it will do so without anyone in the driver’s seat.

While the company was founded in 2009, the technology hasn’t yet expanded to all areas of the U.S., but upcoming projects and goals could point to the Waymo Driver becoming more commonplace throughout the country.

Currently, the driver has been tested across 13 states and San Francisco is the latest place to be able to access fully autonomous rides.

Before operating in a new area, each city and town has to be mapped out with extreme detail. This includes lane markers, stop signs, curbs, crosswalks, and more.

The driver then uses all data, including the custom maps and real-time sensor information, to determine its exact road location.

When looking at the amount of rides taken across major urban areas, over the last six years, the company writes that the Waymo Driver “avoids high-severity collisions better than even the most attentive human drivers.”

They go on to say how data shows that “we have fewer insurance claims and injuries or police reports than human drivers.”

Tesla will deploy humanoid robots next year, according to the company founder and CEO, Elon Musk. 

Initially, the EV giant will produce and deploy the robots for their own use, before they are available commercially in 2026. 

The project is well-advanced with the Optimus robot set to be introduced in Tesla factories by the end of this year.  

Optimus, named with a nod to the Autobots chief in the Transformers series, is around 1.7 meters in height and weighs 56 kilos. It is optimized to carry out  “boring, repetitious, and dangerous” work. 

Musk made the announcement on X, just a day before the company was due to produce its latest financial results. On Monday, shares spiked by more than 5% by the end of trading in New York on Monday.

Tesla’s other interests beyond EVs

Tesla – which is tipped to see its Cybertruck enter the Fortnite realm – has previously showcased the “Tesla Bot” and later Musk claimed the company’s robot business would exceed the value of its car interests, so this is a long-term vision that appears close to fruition. 

Amid a drop in demand for EVs, there appears to be more attention given to alternate ventures. Robots, as well as AI and autonomous driving, are the other areas that Musk is seeking to fully exploit. 

He had hoped to unveil the Robotaxi on Aug. 8 after comments made earlier this year, but in recent days a delay was all but confirmed, as expected. The billionaire entrepreneur added that a change to the design of the front of the vehicle was one of some revisions worked on. 

“The extra time allows us to show off a few other things,” he stated.

Now and then it feels like we’re going back in time as old styles emerge and become mainstream once more. There are now rumors that Apple could be releasing a foldable iPhone in 2026.

While the category of the phone is new, the style could be reminiscent of an early noughties flip phone but with a modern touch.

Following in the footsteps of Samsung who debuted the Galaxy Z Flip in 2020, there have long been reports about Apple testing a foldable device although it was initially believed to be an iPad or MacBook.

According to DigiTimes, the technology giant is currently developing the product and it could be on the market in just two years. Apple is believed to have begun the research and development for the iPhone this year.

Typically, the company has a smartphone development cycle of two years so a 2026 release would be in line with their previous work.

The report claims the phone would be similar to Samsung’s, with a top-down folding factor. When completely unfolded, the smartphone could have similar dimensions to the iPhones we already know.

The rumor also states the company has signed a display panel supply contract with Samsung Display.

Although fans of the brand thought it would be the iPad or MacBook that got the foldable touch, the report claims the company switched to the phone product due to challenges faced in the Chinese smartphone market.

Competition for Samsung if the foldable iPhone is released

If the reports are true, the Galaxy Z Flip will likely have stiff competition for the first time. While sales for these devices aren’t publicly known, Chief Marketing Officer Benjamin Braun shared details at a press conference in 2023.

He said: “Our latest foldable phones are selling super-fast. In fact, the annual sales of our foldable devices have exceeded the Note series in Europe.”

The South Korean multinational has adopted similar technology in its other products, like the Galaxy Book laptops that have a 360-rotating hinge. This means the screen can bend backward if needed.

Apple has not confirmed nor denied rumors about a foldable iPhone.

As Meta announces its largest and most capable large language model yet with the Llama 3.1 405B, Mark Zuckerberg says it’s important technology isn’t controlled by a handful of companies.

Opting for a transparent approach, the CEO wrote a public letter on Tuesday (July 23) explaining why the LLM is open source and why this is ‘good for the world.’

“I believe that open source is necessary for a positive AI future,” writes the billionaire.

Mark is an incredible CEO.

What particularly stood out to me from our conversation was how deeply he thinks about open source and how it’ll benefit Meta (and the world) in the long term.

Zuckerberg explains how this move was taken to “ensure that we always have access to the best technology, and that we’re not locking into a competitor’s closed ecosystem where they can restrict what we build.

“One of my formative experiences has been building our services constrained by what Apple will let us build on their platforms.

“Between the way they tax developers, the arbitrary rules they apply, and all the product innovations they block from shipping, Meta and many other companies would be freed up to build much better services for people if we could build the best versions of our products and competitors were not able to constrain what we could build.”

What is the Llama 3.1 405B model by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta?

Meta officially announced Llama 3.1 on Tuesday (July 23) describing it as having “state-of-the-art capabilities in general knowledge, steerability, math, tool use, and multilingual translation.”

The LLM was trained on over 15 trillion tokens and model training was pushed to over 16 thousand H100 GPUs, making it the first Llama model to be done at such scale.

Meta says they’ve spoken with the community and realize there’s so much more to generative AI development than just prompting models.

As such, they believe developers can do the following with the ecosystem: “real-time and batch interference, supervised fine-tuning, evaluation of your model for a specific application, continual pre-training, retrieval-augmented generation, function calling, and synthetic data generation.”

DraftKings has confirmed plans to introduce a sports betting app in Washington DC. 

Subject to licensing and regulatory approval, The District will become the 28th US state (in addition to Ontario, Canada) in which DraftKings offerings will be available to gamblers. 

Thanks to a market access agreement with MLS franchise DC United, the major US betting and fantasy sports platform has secured further expansion for its online and mobile sportsbook. As part of the launch, fans will have access to a wide range of markets, with features such as in-game play and special odds boosts.

DC is home to elite teams across MLB, MLS, NBA, and NHL with engaged sports communities embedded so this new partnership will aim to leverage the respective fan bases.

Reaction to DraftKings arrival in DC

Matt Kalish, DraftKings President for North America, welcomed the march into new territory for the company. The United Kingdom’s competition watchdog has published a joint statement alongside counterparts from the United States and European Union in a pledge to support competition in AI. 

The Competition and Markets Authority stated there was consensus on the opportunities to be unlocked by AI, but also a need to ensure consumers are protected and for fair competition to flourish.

To balance the advantages and the risks posed by the evolving technology, the bodies have committed to dialogue and sharing information in the memorandum signed by the European Commission, the US Federal Trade Commission, and the US Department of Justice.

Specifically, “the agencies have set out fair dealing, interoperability, and choice as key principles to support competition, protect consumers and help businesses to innovate and thrive.”

One example given was the prospect of leading AI firms consolidating their dominant position in the AI race, which relates to an ongoing case under investigation by the CMA. 

Tangled web of AI company relationships

Concerns have been raised about the “interconnected web” of more than 90 partnerships and relationships between a small number, mainly big tech firms and AI research organizations that can scale up toward almost monopolizing the sector.

One UI is a bespoke software application exclusive to Samsung designed to run “on top” of the main Android operating system on the device. It adds to the user experience, with personalization such as design and interface functions, smart widgets, and much more. 

The update on the launch of One UI 7 beta was provided by Ice Universe (via Android Police), advising of the imminent drop unless any unforeseen circumstances arise. The mooted release follows the timeline of the previous version, One UI 6, which was available in mid-August 2023 but as ever, the lure of a new beta comes with the risk of various bugs and minor issues to unravel.

Once the new software is finalized and ready for full distribution, it will be applied across Samsung’s latest devices. One UI 7 has been tipped to resemble iOS 18 in its appearance and design, as part of an overall significant software update, but at present, new issues like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 are loaded with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1.

Android 15 – now available in beta – will also be expected to display a marked difference from the previous version when it is launched on August 15, on the same day Pixel 9 will take center stage at Google’s hardware event.
