OpenAI’s next-gen Orion model is hitting a serious bottleneck, according to a new report – here’s why
In certain areas, next-gen Orion is failing to impress compared to the existing GPT-4 model.da
OpenAI is reportedly having trouble with Orion in certain areas like codingProgress is slower than expected due to quality issues with training dataThe next-gen model could also be more expensive
OpenAI is running into difficulties with Orion, the next-gen model powering its AI. The company is struggling in certain areas when it comes to the performance gains realized with the successor to GPT-4.
This comes from a report by The Information, citing OpenAI employees, who claim that the increase in quality seen with Orion is ‘far smaller’ than that witnessed when moving from GPT-3 to GPT-4.
We’re also told that some OpenAI researchers are saying that Orion “isn’t reliably better than its predecessor [GPT-4] in handling certain tasks.” What tasks would they be? Apparently, coding is a weaker point, with Orion possibly not outdoing GPT-4 in this arena – although it is also noted that Orion’s language skills are stronger.
So, for general-use queries – and for jobs such as summarizing or rewriting text – it sounds like things are going (relatively) well. However, these rumors don’t sound quite as hopeful for those looking to use AI as a coding helper.
So, what’s the problem here?
By all accounts, OpenAI is running into something of a wall when it comes to the data available to train its AI. As the report makes clear, there’s a “dwindling supply of high-quality text and other data” that LLMs (Large Language Models) can work with in pre-release training to hone their powers in solving knottier problems like resolving coding bugs.
These LLMs have chomped through a lot of the low-hanging fruit, and now finding this good-quality training data is becoming a considerably more difficult process – slowing down advancement in some respects.
On top of that, this training will become more intensive in terms of computing resources, meaning that developing (and running) Orion – and further AI models down the line – will become much more expensive. Of course, the user of the AI will end up footing that bill, one way or another, and there’s even talk of more advanced models becoming effectively “financially unfeasible” to develop.
Not to mention the impact on the environment in terms of bigger data centers whirring away and sucking more power from our grids, all at a time of increasing concern around climate change.
While we need to take this report with an appropriate amount of caution, there are worrying rumblings here, foreshadowing a serious reality check for the development of AI going forward.
The Information further notes that a different approach may be taken in terms of improving AI models on an ongoing basis after their initial training – indeed, this may become a necessity from the sound of things. We shall see.
Orion is expected to debut early in 2025 (and not imminently, as some rumors have hinted), and it may not be called ChatGPT-5, with OpenAI possibly set to change the naming scheme of its AI completely with this next-gen model.

Want to unravel the secrets of the big bang, dark matter and the universe? This is what CERN uses to store more than one exabyte of data and beyond
CERN uses Toshiba HDDs to store more than one exabyte of data related to the big bang, dark matter and the universe
CERN uses over one exabyte of storage for researchThe research laboratory relies on PROMISE and Toshiba for its needsToshiba will be supplying CERN with 20TB hard drives
As you might expect, the world’s largest particle physics laboratory requires some pretty extensive data storage systems to support its research into fundamental questions about the universe.
With particle collision detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) generating approximately 1TB of data per minute, CERN’s storage infrastructure rather obviously needs to be both high-capacity and highly reliable.
Since 2008, CERN has relied on PROMISE Technology’s VTrak J5800 24-bay JBOD enclosures and Toshiba’s Enterprise Capacity HDDs for its storage needs. The storage systems have inevitably evolved over time, beginning with 4TB hard drives and currently featuring Toshiba’s 18TB MG09 Series HDDs.
Supporting CERN’s future storage needs
Together, these systems provide CERN’s central data center with over one exabyte of storage, distributed across more than 120,000 hard drives housed in over 4,000 enclosures. This setup allows data from CERN to be shared with more than 170 research institutes around the world for analysis.
To meet increasing storage requirements, PROMISE Technology recently introduced the 60-bay VTrak J5960 JBOD enclosure, featuring ‘Greenboost’ technology to reduce power consumption by up to 30%. These will be used with Toshiba’s 20TB MG10 Series HDDs, and potentially its 28TB drives in the future.
“In our quest to unravel the mysteries of the universe, we need partners who understand the importance of data storage, reliability, and efficiency with solutions tailored to our unique needs,” said Eric Bonfillou, Deputy Group Leader of CERN’s IT Fabric group.
“We continue to develop higher capacities, up to 30TB and beyond, as HDDs are and will remain essential for storing the exabytes of data that CERN and the entire world produce in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner,” added Rainer W. Kaese, Senior Manager Business Development, Storage Products Division at Toshiba.
Toshiba has released a new video showcasing its partnership with PROMISE Technology to enhance data storage solutions for CERN. You can watch this below.

FBI warns hackers are filing fake police data requests to steal people’s private information
US businesses are being targeted by attackers using .gov email addresses to steal personal information.
FBI issues Private Industry Notification on emergency data requestsHackers are using stolen .gov email addresses to pose as authoritiesMitigations recommended by the FBI should be put in place
Cybercriminals are using stolen government email addresses to submit fraudulent emergency data requests to US companies to steal personally identifying information (PII) of customers, which could be used for nefarious purposes such as phishing and identity theft, experts have warned.
This attack vector has grown in popularity since August 2023, warranting the issue of a Private Industry Notification from the FBI.
The Bureau has also issued a list of mitigation measures for businesses to put in place to keep personal data safe and ensure that only authentic data requests are processed.
Fraudulent requests on the rise
Over the last year, the FBI has logged a significant uptick in forum posts from cybercriminals relating to fraudulent data requests. The trend stemmed from one user stating that for $100, they could teach people to use data requests to obtain information on any social media account. Shortly thereafter, another user discovered that by using a ‘.gov’ email address, they could pose as the authorities and obtain much more detailed information to use for phishing.
Fraudulent data requests gradually became more advanced and more threatening, with one user posting in December 2023 that they included the threat of harm or death to an individual if the data request was not processed and approved.
Shortly following this in March 2024, another known cyber criminal submitted a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) to PayPal. The MLAT used details from a child trafficking investigation, including case number and legal code to appear legitimate, however PayPal declined the MLAT.
In August 2024, a cybercriminal listed “High Quality .gov emails for espionage/social engineering/data extortion/Dada requests, etc” for sale that could be used for fraudulent data access requests to obtain private customer information including names, email addresses, phone numbers, and other personal information.
The FBI recommends that businesses double check the security posture of any connections between 3rd parties they interact with and their own systems, as well as external or remote connections.
Businesses should also be wary of emergency data requests that highlight the urgency of the requests, and check all the details within the request for inconsistencies or doctoring. The full list of mitigations can be found here.

Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning’s first trailer teases one epic last hurrah for Tom Cruise as iconic spy Ethan Hunt – and a May 2025 release date
After a long delay, the next Mission: Impossible movie will arrive next year. Here’s the brand new trailer showing what could be Tom Cruise’s last movie as Ethan Hunt.
After an extensive delay due to the pandemic and the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike shortly after, the next installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise will finally arrive next year with a May 23, 2025, US release date. The trailer for the next movie, titled Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, dropped today (November 11), shows Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt at the center of another dangerously thrilling operation. You can watch it below.
Initially tipped to be titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, the next installment in the movie franchise will be a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023) which sits in our list of best Paramount Plus movies. As well as the return of Tom Cruise as leading man and producer, Christopher McQuarrie is back as director and co-writer following his involvement in previous movies Rogue Nation (2015) and Fallout (2018).
Besides Cruise and McQuarrie, there are a number of other actors featured in the first trailer revealed to come back for what could be the final movie in the series. The next biggest return following Cruise and McQuarrie is Angela Bassett, who’s set to reprise her role as CIA Director Erika Sloane a character first introduced in Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018). Additionally, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, and Hayley Atwell are all lined up to return. Joining them are new cast members Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, and Katy O’Brian.
Once again, Tom Cruise is a masterful stunt artist in yet another suspenseful trailer for his action-pay movie series. In between deep sea diving, darting through the city of London, and even more knife fights, the trailer teases that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning could be the last operation for Cruise as Ethan Hunt.
Mission: Concluded – is this it for Ethan Hunt?
Previously, we’d reported that the seventh and eighth installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise would be Tom Cruise’s last as Ethan Hunt, and based on the new trailer and the title of the movie, it looks like our speculation could be correct. When Cruise revealed the movie poster on Instagram even his caption “Every choice has led to this” was a strong indication that we may be reaching the final destination on the Mission Impossible train.
But despite the little clues scattered throughout the trailer and Paramount’s interest in promoting the movie as the ‘final’ Mission: Impossible entry, The Hollywood Reporter has brought attention to Cruise’s reluctance to publicly bid farewell to Ethan Hunt – revealing that the actor told the Sydney Morning Herald “I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m (Harrison Ford’s) age”.

Brave browser’s built-in VPN gets a boost – both in functionality and transparency
Bigger server network, more connections, subscription plans, and independent audits for the secure browser’s VPN service. Here’s all you need to know.
The Brave Firewall + VPN was originally created to offer better online anonymity to mobile users only. Last year, the VPN tool finally landed on desktop devices, too. Now, the provider has unveiled some serious improvements – both on the transparency and functionality front.
You probably know Brave as a privacy-first web browser, and nothing else. The provider, however, has been expanding its security suite over the years, offering a built-in VPN since 2020. This latest series of improvements looks to not only continue Brave’s commitment to online privacy, but also improve its all-round user experience.
Independently audited
All the best VPN services regularly put their services under the scrutiny of independent auditors so that you don’t have to take their promises for granted. This is what also did Brave this year, for the first time.
Over the summer, experts at security consulting firm Assured looked at the VPN security infrastructure for the second time. They could find only some medium and low-risk issues which Guardian, the service provider powering the VPN, mostly mitigated.
Another third-party audit confirmed the service as a reliable no-log VPN, meaning it should never store your data as stated in its privacy policy. This is very advantageous for your privacy. If, for instance, a malicious hacker or government manages to acquire this data, none of your sensitive information will be leaked because the details simply won’t exist.
Brave’s built-in VPN was updated on desktop and mobile with new features and improvements! There’s a lot to cover so let’s dig in… 🧵 pic.twitter.com/eNekMYkdhcOctober 30, 2024
A boosted VPN
The Brave browser promises to keep your browsing activities more private by blocking trackers, fingerprinting attempts, third-party cookies, and ads by default. At the same time, the virtual private network makes you even more anonymous online as it encrypts your internet connections while masking your real IP address – even when you’re not using the web browser.
IP spoofing isn’t just advantageous in terms of privacy but is also essential to help you bypass censorship and other geo-restrictions online. Now, you have even more choices as the provider has increased its VPN server network, expanding across more than 40 countries and regions worldwide.
You’ll see more servers, alongside a more intuitive interface that promises to make hopping from one city to another much easier than before.
Brave VPN also improved the number of devices you can use the service on at the same time. The number of allowed simultaneous connections with one subscription doubled, in fact, going from five to up to 10 devices across Android, iOS, and desktop.
Last but not least, the cost-saving annual subscriptions already available for mobile users have landed on desktops. Brave Firewall + VPN now costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, no matter the device you use.
It’s worth mentioning that some of TechRadar’s favorite services can be even cheaper if you’re ready to commit longer. I suggest checking out our best cheap VPN page or our Black Friday VPN deals hub for the latest offers.
How to use Brave VPN
The first thing to do to start using Brave VPN is to update to the latest version of Brave. If you’re a new customer, you’ll be able to take advantage of a 7-day free trial – I strongly recommend you do that to see for yourself if it’s the right service for you.
The advantage here is that you don’t have to download another application as the VPN is built-in directly within the browser. On desktop devices, you’ll simply need to click on the VPN button in the Brave browser’s address bar.
If you’re using a mobile, you’ll need to tap on the Brave Setting menu (the three dots) and toggle on Brave VPN.
Samsung accidentally leaks some very big news: its biggest ever QD-OLED TVs could be coming in 2025
Think there’s room in your life for an 83-inch QD-OLED? Samsung thinks there probably is…
Samsung’s database shows 83-inch QD-OLEDs for 2025Some models may use W-OLED panels insteadOfficial launches are expected in January 2025
Samsung appears to be planning the launch of its largest-ever QD-OLED TV in 2025 – and it’s bringing the tech to its S95 series OLED TVs.
That’s according to the famous Samsung leaker… Samsung.
The news comes via Samsung’s own parts database, which lists QD-OLED panels of up to 83 inches with 2025 model numbers. The details were originally posted to Reddit, and they’ve since been corroborated by FlatpanelsHD.
What’s coming to Samsung TVs in 2025
QD-OLED is a direct competitor to LG’s W-OLED panel tech, and it’s currently used in the best OLED TVs such as the Samsung S95D as well as other firms’ models, such as the Sony A95L. Until now it’s maxed out at 77 inches, so the 83-inch panels in Samsung’s database represent a welcome size increase.
According to FlatpanelsHD, the information in the database indicates that the 83-inch Samsung S95F will be available with both QD-OLED and W-OLED – part of a “panel lottery” we’ve seen this year where it’s sometimes unclear what panel is inside a specific Samsung TV. For example, the QN90 QNED TV comes with either a VA LCD panel or an IPS LCD, and there are differences in the contrast levels between each panel kind.
For now, the details of the new TVs only live in the parts database. But if Samsung sticks to its usual schedule we should see its new TV range make its debut at CES 2025 in January, with the inevitable flurry of last-minute leaks in the weeks leading up to that event.

US government wants businesses to stop using C and C++, claims they are insecure
Joint FBI and CISA advisory warns against using memory-unsafe languages for critical infrastructure.
US government agencies speak out about memory-unsafe languagesC/C++ are a “risk to national security,” the economy, public health and safetyDevelopers working with critical infrastructure advised to follow further guidance
The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and the FBI have advised businesses not to use the popular C and C++ programming languages, citing security concerns.
The joint report, titled ‘Product Security Bad Practices,’ forms part of the CISA’s ‘Secure by Design’ initiative, and hopes to guide software manufacturers away from risky practices when creating products for critical infrastructure.
Using memory-unsafe languages, like C and C++, was highlighted as one of the key threats to security in the report.
CISA and FBI warn against use of C/C++
Described as “dangerous” and a “risk to national security, national economic security, and national public health and safety,” the agencies advise against using memory-unsafe languages where memory-safe languages are a viable alternative.
Other recommended action includes publishing a memory safety roadmap by January 1, 2026, detailing steps to address vulnerabilities, particularly for sensitive components, however products with support ending before January 1, 2030 will be exempt from this guidance.
More broadly, a Stack Overflow survey of more than 3,000 UK developers last month revealed that nearly two-thirds (63%) of developers in Britain preferred JavaScript, which is a memory-safe language.
The agencies also highlight some common security oversights, suggesting that companies build products in such a way that they prevent the introduction of SQL injection vulnerabilities and command injection vulnerabilities. The advisory also recommends avoiding using default passwords by requiring the use of secure credentials upon installation.
In terms of ongoing support, the two agencies also call for companies to issue CVEs in a “timely manner,” particularly for critical and high-impact vulnerabilities, whether they are discovered internally or by a third party.
Full details of the advisory can be found on the CISA’s website.

Amazon’s new electric delivery trucks are so quiet you won’t hear your Black Friday bargains coming – and this is good news
Amazon’s Rivian-built EVs are starting to show up with your deliveries.
I heard it before I saw it: a big black van emblazoned with that all-too-familiar Amazon grin. It wasn’t the sizeable van’s engine. No, I heard some unidentifiable 80s hair band rock blaring from the van’s expansive cabin.
My wife and I, who were on one of our daily walks, paused to gawk at the van, one of a handful that had started showing up in my neighborhood over the last month or so. Though as big as a UPS truck, these Rivian-built vans cruise silently through our streets, delivering on a promise Amazon made in June to launch a fleet of 15,000 electric delivery vans across the US (it’s also rolling EV delivering trucks out in Europe), with the ultimate goal of seeding at least 100,000 such vans. The company currently has at least 90,000 gas-powered vehicles delivering your precious packages.
Amazon isn’t alone in its efforts to remove fossil fuel-guzzling delivery trucks from the road. The United States Postal Service unveiled its fleet of EVs in January and planned to start using them in Georgia. The rollout didn’t really get underway, though, until September.
UPS, which claims to have been driving EVs for almost a century, reports over 18,000 “alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles” on the road.
Amazon and UPS have reported building out charging networks to support these growing EV fleets, though.
These efforts matter because some estimates put the number of holiday package deliveries in the billions, and that’s just for the USPS.
A shift to electric is unlikely to impact the speed of your Black Friday and holiday gift deliveries, but the long-term impact on the environment might be measurable. A 2015 study reported that medium- and heavy-duty delivery trucks account for 30% of all pollution produced by vehicles.
A sound decision
I thought about some of this as I reflected on the still-shiny delivery van before us, admiring the tall, narrow build, low-slung chassis and surprisingly small wheels. We were about to move on when a voice from behind us called out, “Pretty cool, huh?”
We spun around to find a young, bearded Amazon delivery guy who seemed as excited about his truck as we were interested (and maybe a bit confused by his music choice).
He told us it was electric and like driving the future. “It has cameras all around.”
In addition to electric motors, these Rivian vans are packed with cutting-edge features like automatic braking, collision warnings, automatic doors that open as the driver approaches, and a nice large display next to the steering wheel as a viewport for all those cameras.
I smiled and wondered how soon he might hop back in and drive his music out of my neighborhood, but it turned out there was a method to his madness.
I remarked at how quiet these vehicles were, perhaps in part to obliquely tell him that his music was breaking that silence. The delivery guy smiled back at me and said, “Yeah, that’s why I blast my music.” No one hears me coming. I’ve been right behind people, and they have no idea.”
With that, the driver waved goodbye, hopped back into his future-leaning delivery truck, and silently sped away (with his music still playing, of course).

NordVPN launches new ID theft protection tool, in yet another expansion of its cybersecurity empire
NordProtect is currently available for all NordVPN Prime users in the US, and more support is coming soon. Here’s why you should use this tool alongside your VPN app.
With the frequency of identity theft incidents rising worldwide, NordVPN has decided to expand its cybersecurity empire with a new ID theft protection tool. This tool will help you protect your identity online and recover from any losses or damages.
NordProtect is currently available for all NordVPN Prime users in the US only. The provider expects to unveil further support and a standalone product in the first half of 2025.
NordProtect: what is it and why you should use it?
As Tomas Sinicki, managing director of NordProtect, explains, you can have all of the necessary cybersecurity tools installed, but just one careless click can give cyber criminals your identity.
He said: “Here’s when NordProtect comes to the rescue by recovering and restoring lost identity assets.”
NordProtect is an all-round ID theft protection service that includes:
Identity recovery and restoration. You can receive up to $1M to cover identity theft recovery costs, including legal costs or lost wages. NordVPN was recently confirmed, yet again, as TechRadar’s top VPN choice following a new successful round of testing. Reviewers were especially impressed by its impeccable speeds and unblocking results, coupled with numerous improvements across different platforms.
In 2024, data breaches have grown in size and frequency, with many incidents targeting consumers’ data. In May, over 500 million users’ data was put up for sale online when Ticketmaster was breached in one of the biggest incidents of the year.
Other statistics also show the rise in identity theft, with over 550 million reported cases in the US through the first half of the year alone.
Hence, the need for diversified cybersecurity protection has become increasingly relevant. NordProtect is just the last tool developed by the provider to give you more control over your most sensitive information.
Today’s release expands on the work started in December last year with the launch of cyber insurance plans for the UK and US markets. In 2024, the security company also released a global eSIM card, Saily, and NordStellar, a threat exposure management solution for businesses.
NordProtect is currently available only for people in the US subscribing to NordVPN’s Prime subscription, which starts from $7.89 per month. The team is expected to launch NordProtect for other markets and as a standalone product in the first half of 2025. So, if you’re not based in the US, stay tuned as more support should come soon.
Incogni, a personal data removal service, is already available alongside the virtual private network and other products with some NordVPN bundles for users worldwide.
