The answers to today’s Quordle, game #1032, are…

RABBIEAGERCOUGHBRASH

EAGER is one of those annoying words that always trips me up in Quordle. I see the -AGER pattern and immediately think ‘I need a consonant, then. L for LAGER, P for PAGER or W for WAGER.’ But no, there is a vowel that goes there too, it’s E for EAGER, and I always fail to consider it.

Fortunately the other words here were fairly simple solves for me, although RABBI is a difficult word in isolation; BBI for the final three letters is not common at all (in fact, I don’t think there are any other words that have that format). BRASH might have caused problems depending on which letters you had ruled out (TRASH and CRASH are alternatives), but all told this was a straightforward Quordle.

The answers to today’s Connections, game #529, are…

YELLOW: KINDS OF SHIRTS FLANNEL, OXFORD, POLO, TEEGREEN: SPHERES IN MILK TEA BOBA, BUBBLE, PEARL, TAPIOCABLUE: MARINE INVERTEBRATES, FAMILIARLY CORAL, JELLY, SPONGE, STARPURPLE: STARTS OF PASTA NAMES FETT, PENN, TORTE, ZIT

My rating: HardMy score: Fail

Okay, this was simply too difficult for me. I’m not beating myself up about it – I just wasn’t smart enough to get all four groups. Scratch that – I was only smart enough to get one group.

I solved yellow, spotting that FLANNEL and POLO were both KINDS OF SHIRTS. TEE – which until then I’d been thinking might be a homophone for TEA – was obviously another inclusion, but I wasn’t certain about the fourth. However I thought that maybe OXFORD was also an example and indeed it was. It’s probably to do with the university or something, I don’t know – but it seemed to fit (pardon the pun).

After that, though, nothing. I had several leads, and a couple were on the right lines, but I couldn’t put the correct four together in either case. Green – SPHERES IN MILK TEA – was one that I had a hunch about, given that I know TAPIOCA is an ingredient and that they are PEARLs. And of course they contain BUBBLEs, too. But I’ve heard of BOBA, so didn’t get that one.

Similarly, I figured that CORAL and SPONGE might go together in some sea-life-related group, and separately also considered JELLY and STAR as words that have FISH after them. But I didn’t put the four together, possibly because two were abbreviated and two were not. To me that feels a little unfair of the NYT, stating that they are all MARINE INVERTEBRATES, FAMILIARLY; I’m not sure I’ve ever used the word STAR to refer to a starfish, or JELLY to talk about a jellyfish.

That wouldn’t have mattered if I’d have solved one of the other groups, of course, so I won’t dwell on it. And purple was simply far too difficult, I truly had no idea there at all. I guess I’ll start building again tomorrow…

Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Wednesday, 20 November, game #528)

YELLOW: SOUND LIKE A DOG BARK, BAY, HOWL, SNARLGREEN: BROADCAST, AS ONLINE MEDIA AIR, PLAY, RUN, STREAMBLUE: COCKTAIL-MAKING VERBS GARNISH, MUDDLE, STIR, STRAINPURPLE: ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURES, METAPHORICALLY CHAIN, LADDER, PYRAMID, TREE

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final one, as you’ll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It’s a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It’s playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

The answers to today’s Strands, game #263, are…

POKERCHIMNEYBROOMFLUEHEARTHSCREENMANTELSPANGRAM: FIREPLACE

My rating: EasyMy score: Perfect

This will date me, but does anyone else remember those wonderful Busytown and Lowly Worm books by Richard Scarry? I loved these as kids, poring over the illustrations in search of all of the different named objects and characters. Playing Strands sometimes feels like a similar exercise. “Today’s theme, children, is FIREPLACE. Now name as many words as you can that are related. Yes, CHIMNEY, that’s a good one. Oh well done, you got BROOM!”

That is the point of Strands, I guess, but equally it’s more challenging when the puzzle is a little more creative – for instance when it involves pairs of things, or phrases, or logic in some way. Just naming things is a lot easier, and Strands is not a difficult game at the best of times. We’re 250-plus games in now, and I don’t think I’ve ever failed one. Contrast that with Connections, where I fail regularly, and you can see the problem.

Anyway, there’s no major problem with today’s game, it’s just a little straightforward to hold the attention for longer than a few minutes. Maybe that’s no bad thing, given how busy we all are, though.

Meta AI smart glasses say bonjour, hola, and ciao to Europe and new languages

Ray-Ban Meta AI smart glasses add European languages and countries.

Meta is doing its part to make 2025 the year of smart glasses by releasing the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses in several European countries. Soon, people in France, Italy, Ireland, and Spain will be able to buy the AI-powered wearables, and the Meta AI assistant will be able to communicate with users in Spanish, French, Italian, and English.

“With Meta AI on Ray-Ban Meta glasses, people have a hands-free way to ask questions on-the-go and receive real time answers and information, recommendations, or even receive some creative writing inspiration,” Meta described in a blog post. “For example, you can ask, “Hey Meta, what’s the best patisserie in Paris?” or “What are some good gift ideas for my kids aged 6 and 8?” and receive an answer instantly. “

European locales won’t have access to all the features of the smart glasses available in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. Specifically, European wearers won’t be able to ask Meta AI about what’s around them and hear a description of landmarks or events around them, at least for now.

In the U.S., you might look at the Statue of Liberty and ask about its history or ask the AI to tell you the species of a plant you see on a hike.

AI EU

That might be a regulatory issue about the smart glasses and their visual processing ability rather than a technical obstacle. This isn’t the first time Meta has cited the EU’s regulatory environment as a barrier to its feature rollouts.

Similar rules slowed the release of the Meta AI assistant across the continent. As the tech giant continues to work with government agencies, more European countries will likely get access to the smart glasses.

Still, four new countries and three new languages are a big deal. They extend the potential market enormously, particularly in regions where English is uncommon. Plus, there are an enormous number of countries where Spanish and French are spoken, albeit in many different dialects.

Reddit is down – live updates on the huge outage

Reddit is not loading – everybody panic!

Reddit suffered a major outage on Wednesday, plunging its millions of devoted users into discussion darkness, with no place to drop their hot takes, memes, and AMA.

As of 4PM ET, the popular website was returning a mostly blank page with an upstream error at the top

Down Detector put Reddit at the top of its outage list.

Reddit appeared to be recovering by 4:13PM but the instability remains.

Some pages, like the all-important Popular, remain blank.

On the bright side, you can still peruse some of Reddit’s homepage.

Today, perhaps coincidentally, was also the day of US News Anchor Katie Couric’s first-ever Reddit AMA. It launched at 2PM ET, though we’re not pointing any fingers.

While the Reddit homepage appears to be sort of functional, Reddit’s own status checker is reporting degraded performance for most of its services. No word, yet, on what’s causing the issues. and, yes, “popular” remains offline.

As of 4:36PM ET, Reddit’s homepage was failing again. Clearly, the issue, whatever it is, is significant enough that Reddit’s developers are likely playing a game of whackamole with critical failures.

While the function for adding a new Reddit post appears, the system is still reporting multiple errors, and ultimately nothing gets posted. Guess all those anxious Reddit users will have to head over to Discord to post updates.

As is usually the case, people on other social media platforms are enjoying a little schadenfreude over Reddit’s ongoing problems.

Even upstart social media platform Bluesky was paying attention though it, too, was suffering through a series of small outages on Wednesday. There is no indication they are connected. Bluesky keeps going down because of its sudden and almost unprecedented popularity.

Some parts of Reddit appear to be performing normally except for this annoying error message banner that appears at the top of almost every page. It’s another sign that all is not well in Reddit Land.

Dangerous global botnet fueling residential proxies is being hit in major crackdown

Lumen and partners have disrupted the operations of the NSOCKS proxy and the underlying ngioweb botnet.

Security researchers from Lumen’s Black Lotus were investigating the ngioweb botnet for more than a yearAfter identifying the infrastructure and traffic, the company started blocking the data flowThe botnet, and the proxy service NSOCKS, are severely disrupted as a result

Security researchers have disrupted a major malicious botnet, and thus also hurt the proxy service it powered.

Cybersecurity researchers from Lumen’s Black Lotus have released a new report saying they blocked all traffic across their global network that went to, or from, the dedicated infrastructure associated with the ‘ngioweb’ botnet.

The Ngioweb botnet, first spotted in mid-2023, operated more than 35,000 bots (compromised endpoints, basically) every day. The bots were located in 180 countries and were used, first and foremost, to power the NSOCKS proxy service. This “notorious criminal proxy service”, as Black Lotus describes it, is linked to the threat actor known as Muddled Libra. There are also indications that the proxy was used by state-sponsored threat actors such as APT28 (aka FancyBear, a known Russian threat actor).

Disrupting the operation

“At least 80% of NSOCKS bots in our telemetry originate from the ngioweb botnet, mainly utilizing small office/home office (SOHO) routers and IoT devices. Two-thirds of these proxies are based in the U.S.,” the researchers said.

A proxy service allows threat actors to run different malicious campaigns, while hiding their true identity and location, by using a “proxy” – or a middleman device.

Besides operating as a proxy, the ngioweb botnet could also be used to mount disruptive Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks.

Lumen took more than a year to analyze the botnet and its operations, and while it could not conclude exactly how the hardware was compromised, it speculated that it was most likely through various n-day vulnerabilities.

At press time, the NSOCKS proxy, and the underlying ngioweb botnet are being heavily disrupted by Lumen and its partners, given that the researchers found both the botnet’s architecture, and traffic.

DJI’s next trick could be a surprise robot vacuum – and no, it sadly won’t fly upstairs

Leak suggests DJI could trade skies for carpets

A leaked image suggests DJI could be planning to launch a robot vacuumIt could be called the DJI Romo and combine a vacuum and mop It’s early days for rumors but DJI has been entering new markets lately

From e-bikes to power stations, DJI has been dipping its toes into new waters this year – and it could soon make a particularly surprising leap into robot vacuums, according to new rumors.

According to a leaked image from @JasperEllens (picked up by DroneNR and Notebookcheck) the so-called DJI Romo vacuum seemingly exists, in prototype form at least.

Whether the Romo actually makes it to production remains to be seen, but given DJI’s recent record of branching out from making the best drones, it certainly wouldn’t be a huge leap. A robot vacuum would also, on paper, combine a lot of its existing tech.

DJI currently makes robots like the RoboMaster S1, drones with advanced obstacle-avoidance systems like the DJI Mavic 3 Pro, and cameras with advanced Lidar-based autofocus like the DJI Ronin 4D. The only thing that’s really missing from the tech mix is the cleaning powers of the best robot vacuums.

I can’t stop laughing.@DJIGlobal actually made the #DJIROMO. The vacuum cleaner they registered a year ago. What will it do? Fly up the stairs? And the key question, will it come with LiDAR? That’s it guys, I am out… hahahaha pic.twitter.com/9BcvJjQscCNovember 1, 2024

Given this is the only leak we’ve seen so far, the DJI Romo remains highly speculative, but it seems we can expect a combined robot vacuum and mop with features like individual room controls and pet detection.

The only thing we’re pretty confident of ruling out is a flying robot vacuum with propellors (which the leaked image appears to back up). That is unless DJI has quietly absorbed some of the team behind the bonkers Ring Always Home Cam (below), a flying security cam that never saw the light of day.

Why a robot vacuum?

The Ring Always Home Cam (above) never landed officially – and we feel confident in ruling out a flying DJI robot vacuum. (Image credit: Ring)

DJI has never been shy about barging into new markets and disrupting them with its consistently impressive tech – and while the DJI Romo may ultimately be just another of its wild prototypes, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see DJI launch a robot vacuum in 2025.

The move towards diversifying its product lineup seems to have coincided with the increasing heat it’s been feeling from US regulators about its flying cameras and the supposed security risks they pose.

A full DJI ban has fortunately never materialized, but the rumblings seem likely to continue under the new Trump administration in 2025 – which means we can expect to see it continue to branch out next year beyond its Avinox Drive System for e-bikes.

Disrupting the robot vacuum market may also seem more appealing since Amazon’s iRobot takeover bit the dust earlier this year, which means there’s no clear dominant player. Our best robot vacuums guide contains a wide mix of brands, from Ecovacs to Narwal (pictured at the top of this page).

Another rumor that’s much closer to DJI’s home turf is that it could soon gate-crash the world of the best 360 cameras with a rival to Insta360 and GoPro. That’s just one of the many rumored DJI launches we’ve seen recently, which have also included an Osmo Mobile 7 phone gimbal, Mavic 4 drone, and a Mic Mini microphone – which now looks likely to be launched on November 26, according to DJI’s own teaser.

That’s quite the roll call of new tech – and who knows, maybe it’ll be crowned in 2025 by a new rival for the likes of Eufy, iRobot, Narwal, and Roborock.

ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode lands in your desktop browser – and it’s a big step towards its rumored Operator agent

ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode now works in a browser for subscribers.

OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT Advanced Voice mode in the browserOnly paying subscribers will get access for nowIt’s a vital first step towards browser-based AI agents for ChatGPT

It’s been a busy time for ChatGPT and OpenAI. Hot on the heels of rumors that ChatGPT Advanced Voice mode (the ability to have a free-flowing conversation with the AI) is about to get the ability to ‘see’, and rolling out the ChatGPT Windows app to all free users last week, it has just announced that Advanced Voice mode is now available in the browser-based version of ChatGPT, for paid subscribers only.

So, if you’re a ChatGPT Plus or Teams subscriber, a visit to ChatGPT.com (or the newly purchased Chat.com domain) will soon give you access to the Advanced Voice mode option that has previously only been available only in the app versions of ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode was released in September on mobile and was recently added to the desktop apps. The browser release is described as “rolling out”, so you might not see the Advanced Voice mode when you log in with ChatGPT (we currently don’t have access), but that should change in the coming days.

Free users will eventually get access to Advanced Voice Mode too. In a post on X.com, which also contains a video that shows how ChatGPT Advanced Voice Mode works in a browser, Kevin Weil, CPO of OpenAI said, “We’ll look to roll to free users in the coming weeks.”

Rolling out to ChatGPT paid users this week: Advanced Voice Mode on web! 😍 We launched Advanced Voice Mode in our iOS and Android apps in September, and just recently brought them to our desktop apps (https://t.co/vVRYHXsbPD)—now we’re excited to add web to the mix. This means… pic.twitter.com/HtG5Km2OGhNovember 19, 2024

AI Operators

ChatGPT Advanced Voice mode is a vital first step towards the rumored ChatGPT Operator Agent, a tool that might change the way we interact with our computers and technology in general.

ChatGPT Operator Agent is an AI Agent that can interact directly with your computer on your behalf. Agents aren’t unique to OpenAI – everybody from Anthropic to Google and Microsoft is also developing autonomous AI agents that can see what’s on your screen and interact with it. You could, for example, get an AI Agent to pay your bills, or book a holiday for you, taking the virtual assistant model to the next level. Voice control in the browser will be a necessary first step for using an AI Agent since the majority of its work will be browser-based.

Don’t expect the announcements from OpenAI to slow down before the end of the year. We’re still expecting ChatGPT search, which launched recently for paid users, to be made available to users on the free tier any day now. It launched with the note, “We’ll roll out to Free users over the coming months.”

Someone fused a 3D printer and a vacuum robot to create a mobile 3D printer that can print on almost any flat surface — including your floor

This mobile 3D printing robot can print designs on floors and other flat surfaces.

MobiPrint robot autonomously prints designs directly onto floorsDeveloped for accessibility, inspired by tactile markers for navigationFuture plans include AI for larger, adaptable, on-site printing

Imagine a 3D printer that can print creations exactly where you need them. That’s the idea behind MobiPrint, a mobile 3D printing robot developed by Daniel Campos Zamora at the University of Washington.

This innovative device autonomously navigates a room, printing designs directly onto floors or other surfaces, offering “a new system that combines robotics and 3D printing that could actually go and print in the real world,” as Campos Zamora told IEEE Spectrum.

Unveiled at the ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology, MobiPrint introduces a new level of flexibility to 3D printing. The system consists of a modified Prusa Mini+ 3D printer mounted on a Roborock S5 vacuum robot, using the open source software Valetudo to map its environment autonomously, allowing users to view and control its path locally without cloud dependency.

Park and print

Capable of printing on carpet, hardwood, and vinyl with dimensions up to 180 x 180 x 65 mm, MobiPrint has already been used to produce objects like pet food bowls, signage, and tactile markers, demonstrating its practical versatility.

The inspiration for MobiPrint came from accessibility needs. Campos Zamora’s lab is focused on creating tools to assist visually impaired users. “One of the things that really inspired this project was looking at the tactile surface indicators that help blind and low vision users find their way around a space,” he explained to IEEE Spectrum. By printing these indicators directly on-site, MobiPrint could make navigation easier in indoor spaces that frequently change.

Currently, MobiPrint operates in a “park and print” mode, requiring it to stay stationary while printing, limiting its ability to create larger designs. However, Campos Zamora envisions expanding its functionality to print larger, continuous objects, follow users to print accessibility markers along their path, or even use AI to suggest print locations.

Though the robot may seem unconventional, and it certainly looks rudimentary in its current form, the technology has the potential to make 3D printing more accessible and versatile, directly shaping spaces with designs customized to the user’s needs. You can see it in action in the video below.
