The answers to today’s Quordle, game #979, are…

SERIFBORNEWRITESLEEK

A couple of today’s words might cause some problems; SERIF is a relatively uncommon word that has a very uncommon format, with that IF ending, while SLEEK contains a repeated E. WRITE was the one I lost a guess on, though: that -RI-E format is a very common one, and could be the likes of TRIBE or TRITE as well as the eventual answer. Other than that, though, my three start words did the hard work and I survived with a guess to spare.

Unfortunately I was far less careful with the Daily Sequence and failed for the second time in only a few days. There were some very difficult words there, admittedly, but I still should have played a lot more sensibly.

How did you do today? Send me an email and let me know.

Gen Z Grads Are Being Fired Months After Being Hired

“After complaining that Gen Z grads are difficult to work with for the best part of two years, bosses are no longer all talk, no action — now they’re rapidly firing young workers who aren’t up to scratch just months after hiring them,” writes Fortune.

“According to a new report, six in 10 employers say they have already sacked some of the Gen Z workers they hired fresh out of college earlier this year.”

Intelligent.com, a platform dedicated to helping young professionals navigate the future of work, surveyed nearly 1,000 U.S. leaders… After experiencing a raft of problems with young new hires, one in six bosses say they’re hesitant to hire college grads again. Meanwhile, one in seven bosses have admitted that they may avoid hiring them altogether next year. Three-quarters of the companies surveyed said some or all of their recent graduate hires were unsatisfactory in some way…

Employers’ gripe with young people today is their lack of motivation or initiative — 50% of the leaders surveyed cited that as the reason why things didn’t work out with their new hire. Bosses also pointed to Gen Z being unprofessional, unorganized and having poor communication skills as their top reasons for having to sack grads. Leaders say they have struggled with the latest generation’s tangible challenges, including being late to work and meetings often, not wearing office-appropriate clothing, and using language appropriate for the workspace.

Now, more than half of hiring managers have come to the conclusion that college grads are unprepared for the world of work. Meanwhile, over 20% say they can’t handle the workload.

Here’s a peek at how A Minecraft Movie will handle crafting

The team behind the upcoming Minecraft movie shared a new clip during Minecraft Live that expands on the brief crafting moment we saw in the polarizing first teaser. The scene comes in the middle of a discussion between Mojang creative director Torfi Frans Olafsson and A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess, at 4:51. The segment also gives us our first look at the movie’s interpretation of a Minecraft bee, which I’m not quite sure how to feel about yet. That you can find toward the end of the video.

A Minecraft Movie is slated for release in April 2025 and stars Jack Black as Steve, alongside Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers and Sebastian Eugene Hansen. Plans for it were first announced a decade ago, and potential release dates were set and scrapped on multiple occasions in the time since. At long last, it’s actually now happening — for better or worse.

Hidden Pref to Restore Slow-Motion Dock Minimizing on MacOS

In the midst of recording last week’s episode of The Talk Show with Nilay Patel, I offhandedly mentioned the age-old trick of holding down the Shift key while minimizing a window (clicking the yellow button) to see the genie effect in slow motion. Nilay was like “Wait, what? That’s not working for me…” and we moved on.

What I’d forgotten is that Apple had removed this as default behavior a few years ago (I think in MacOS 10.14 Mojave), but you can restore the feature with this hidden preference, typed in Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock slow-motion-allowed -bool YES

Then restart the Dock:

killall Dock

Or, in a single command:

defaults write com.apple.dock slow-motion-allowed -bool YES; killall Dock

I had forgotten that this had become a hidden preference, and that I’d long ago enabled it.
