If you’re familiar with the name EmuDeck, you’re likely a Steam Deck owner looking for an easy and user-friendly way to run emulators on your Steam Deck handheld. Now, one of the coders behind that software suite is dipping their toes into branded gaming hardware with the EmuDeck Machines project, now seeking funding on IndieGogo.

The EmuDeck Machines obviously come with EmuDeck software preinstalled to let users easily “play your retro games from your couch.” But they also promise to let you run games from Steam and other popular PC launchers through the Linux-based, gaming-focused Bazzite OS. The vibe is definitely similar to that of Valve’s own aborted Steam Machines effort from years back, albeit in a less “official” capacity.

“The idea behind the EmuDeck Machine is to make hardware easy just as EmuDeck did with software,” project lead DragoonDorise writes on the EmuDeck Patreon. “This is not focused to tech savvy people. It’s for people that want a no-hassle experience, just buy and play,” they added on Reddit.

Apple and Nvidia may invest in OpenAI

OpenAI is reportedly gearing up for a huge round of funding, and Apple and Nvidia might be among the investors.
On Thursday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple, which is planning to integrate ChatGPT into iOS, is in talks to invest. Soon after, Bloomberg also reported that Apple is in talks but added that Nvidia “has discussed” joining the funding round as well. The round is reportedly being led by Thrive Capital and would value OpenAI at more than $100 billion.
It’s perhaps not too surprising that Apple and Nvidia might end up investing in OpenAI. Apple is set to integrate ChatGPT with Siri later this year, and it reportedly planned to have Phil Schiller join OpenAI’s board before apparently abandoning that plan. And Nvidia is a key supplier to OpenAI, which relies on Nvidia’s chips to help power its AI services.
Microsoft is also in talks to join the funding round, according to Bloomberg. The company invested $1 billion in OpenAI in 2019 and made a multibillion-dollar investment in 2023.
Apple and OpenAI didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment. Nvidia and Microsoft declined to comment.

Feds to get early access to OpenAI, Anthropic AI to test for doomsday scenarios

AI companies agreed that ensuring AI safety was key to innovation.

OpenAI and Anthropic have each signed unprecedented deals granting the US government early access to conduct safety testing on the companies’ flashiest new AI models before they’re released to the public.

According to a press release from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the deal creates a “formal collaboration on AI safety research, testing, and evaluation with both Anthropic and OpenAI” and the US Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute.

Through the deal, the US AI Safety Institute will “receive access to major new models from each company prior to and following their public release.” This will ensure that public safety won’t depend exclusively on how the companies “evaluate capabilities and safety risks, as well as methods to mitigate those risks,” NIST said, but also on collaborative research with the US government.
