New Spatial Apps, Games, and Video Coming to Apple Vision Pro

Apple is expanding its selection of spatial and immersive experiences for the Vision Pro headset with a series of new games, apps, and video content.

Among the newly introduced experiences is a spatial version of “Castle Crumble,” a physics-based puzzle game that lets players interact in a 3D environment. Players can use their hands to precisely target the castles’ weak points with a variety of powerful explosives, mystical spells, and unlockable boosts. Castle Crumble is available now on the App Store.

“Puzzle Sculpt,” another spatial game, is set to release on September 5. Developed by Schell Games, an award-winning studio known for pioneering gameplay with emerging technologies, “Puzzle Sculpt” offers a relaxing, 3D puzzle-solving experience. The game invites players to interact with a variety of puzzles in a fully immersive spatial environment.

Meanwhile, “Immersion Golf” from Tag Heuer takes golf enthusiasts to the next level with detailed 3D maps of nearly 40,000 courses worldwide. The app allows players to preview course layouts and obstacles, providing a comprehensive tool for planning their game strategy.

“Sandblox: The Marble Game” allows players to create and share physics-based puzzles and marble runs using intuitive hand tracking. The game encourages both solo and collaborative play, with users able to build complex structures and share their creations online. “Pinball Nation” transforms living spaces into a virtual 1980s pinball arcade, complete with life-sized virtual tables and realistic gameplay, while “Beat Slash – Mixed” offers a high-energy rhythm game where players use swords to slash beats in time with the music.

Starting September 6, Vision Pro users will also have access to new films and series captured in Apple Immersive Video. This includes the premiere of “Elevated,” an aerial travel series that provides viewers with breathtaking views from staggering heights. Available exclusively to U.S. users, “Elevated” aims to transport audiences to iconic vistas around the world. Another notable addition is “4 Minutes Inside Super Bowl LVIII,” a short film that offers an immersive glimpse into the intense atmosphere of the Super Bowl LVIII, where the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the San Francisco 49ers. This film will be available to a global audience.

On the same day, Vision Pro users worldwide will also be able to watch the first episode of “Boundless,” titled “Hot Air Balloons,” and the second episode of “Wild Life,” focusing on elephants.

Popular Vision Pro apps are also receiving significant updates. The PGA TOUR app now features SharePlay support, enabling users to watch every hole, follow the leaderboard, and examine every shot in 3D. Meanwhile, “Synth Riders,” available on Apple Arcade, has been enhanced with a new Adrenaline Pack, adding high-energy punk and ska music to its existing eclectic mix.Related Roundup: Apple Vision ProTag: Apple ArcadeBuyer’s Guide: Vision Pro (Buy Now)Related Forum: Apple Vision ProThis article, “New Spatial Apps, Games, and Video Coming to Apple Vision Pro” first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

The Morning After: X labeled an NPR story about Trump as ‘unsafe’

X briefly discouraged users from viewing a link to an NPR story about Donald Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery. NPR reporter Stephen Fowler posted a link to a story in which he quoted an Army official who said an employee at Arlington National Cemetery was “abruptly pushed aside” during an event attended by Trump and members of his campaign earlier this week. Clicking on the story generated an X warning message saying, “this link may be unsafe.” It stated it could be malicious, violent, spammy or otherwise violate the platform’s rules. In a statement to an NPR reporter, an X spokesperson claimed the warning appeared due to a “false positive.” It’s now been removed.
It might be an innocent mistake, but X owner Musk has been a vocal supporter of Trump this election. Musk has also publicly feuded with NPR in the past — weird fight to pick — adding a “state-affiliated media” label to its account for several months last year. NPR hasn’t posted from its main account on X since the label was added.

The PS5 Pro could appear in the next few weeks
But what will it look like?

The PS5 Pro could be announced in mid-September and will likely hit store shelves sometime during the holiday season, according to insider information published by VGC. First of all, it’ll actually be called the PS5 Pro, with the leaker claiming to have access to the packaging design, but they didn’t feel comfortable sharing copyrighted images. However, specs? We don’t know. Disc drive option? Maybe. Other leaks have hinted at the console’s power. A YouTuber leaked apparently official documentation from Sony that shared some of the console’s specifications, but the video was pulled down at Sony’s behest. It has also been rumored the GPU will have 33.5 teraflops versus the standard PS5’s 10.28 teraflops. Don’t expect a three-times more powerful console: Recent changes in AMD’s architecture make it difficult to directly compare teraflop numbers.

They could lead to crop-tending robots that sense subtle chemical reactions.

Researchers at Cornell University tapped into fungal mycelia to power a pair of proof-of-concept robots. Mycelia, the underground fungal network that can sprout mushrooms as its above-ground fruit, can sense light and chemical reactions and communicate through electrical signals. Researchers created two robots: a soft spider-like one and a four-wheeled buggy. The researchers used mycelia’s light-sensing abilities to control the machines using ultraviolet light.

Spotify says Apple ‘discontinued’ the tech for some of its volume controls on iOS
Whyyyyyy?

The latest round in the Spotify vs. Apple battle concerns… volume. According to Spotify, Apple “discontinued the technology” on volume buttons for Spotify Connect. Yeah, it’s baffling.
Spotify Connect allows you to sync with speakers, TVs and other devices from inside the streaming app. It works with either Bluetooth or WiFi. Apple told Spotify it requires apps to integrate with HomePod to access the technology that controls the volume on iPhones. The streaming company added this issue doesn’t affect Bluetooth or AirPlay connections, nor does it impact Android users.

Nintendo can’t repair your New 3DS because it ran out of parts
It’s been over a decade.

Nintendo has stopped offering repairs for the New Nintendo 3DS. Sure, it’s a decade old, but apparently Nintendo has simply run out of parts. Third-party repair platform iFixit currently has a stock of replacement parts and guides for the handheld in its online catalog. US customers can still take advantage of Nintendo’s repair service for late-model 3DS XLs. For now.

Dell’s server sales are riding high off of cloud and AI investment

The company’s long-time coming collaboration with NVidia, one of the world’s biggest AI processor manufacturers, is getting results.

Dell’s latest quarterly results have surpassed Wall Street’s expectations, driven by an 80% rise in server sales largely attributed to business and cloud storage provider interest in artificial intelligence (AI).

Per CNBC, Dell’s net income has climbed to $841 million from $455 million versus last year, while overall revenue for the quarter, $25.06 billion, saw a 9% increase from $22.93 billion this time last year.

These upward trends chime with AI’s stranglehold on the tech industry, and Dell isn’t the only company seeing them. Days previously, HP announced its own Q3 performance results, including a 2% rise in net revenue and “a return to revenue growth” for the company, citing the release of a range of AI-powered PCs.

Dell’s AI PC dominance

Dell has become one of the largest vendors for AI-equipped servers that use reliable hardware, such as Nvidia’s own Blackwell chip range, set to suit “trillion-parameter scale generative AI” purposes.

Back in May 2024 at this year’s Dell Technologies World conference, Dell CEO Michael Dell and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made a joint announcement of an ‘AI factory’, combining server production with a “generative AI solution for digital assistants” to help businesses to deploy AI chatbots.

Given the scale of this operation across hardware and software production and deployment, it’s perhaps no surprise that Dell’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke was, per CNBC, quoted on the latest earnings call as saying that “we are competing in all of the big AI deals and are winning significant deployments at scale,” and going so far as to disclose a backlog of $3.8 billion’s worth of unfulfilled AI server orders.

BlackByte ransomware returns with new tactics, targets VMware ESXi

The group was seen exploiting a known VMware ESXi bug to deploy ransomware.

The ransomware operators known as BlackByte appaear to have shifted tactics, pivoting away from targeting vulnerable devices and focusing instead on flawed VMware ESXi hypervisors.

The group has also started using remote desktop software sanctioned by the victim organization, instead of deploying commercial software themselves, new research from Cisco Talos has claimed.

In a blog post, Talos IR researchers said while BlackByte “continues to leverage tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPS) that have formed the foundation of its tradecraft since its inception,” it was also recently seen using techniques that “depart” from that. Namely, taking advantage of CVE-2024-37085, an authentication bypass vulnerability found in VMware ESXi.

BlackByte and Conti

Talos IR also argues that BlackByte is significantly more active than its data leak site would imply. In fact, the researchers believe only 20-30% of successful attacks end up on the data leak site. They don’t know for certain why BlackByte publishes only a handful of its activities, but we can speculate that many victims end up paying the ransom, if that means keeping the breach private.

BlackByte was first spotted in mid-2021, with researchers believing the group spun out off the defunct Conti ransomware group. For those unaware, Conti was a major ransomware player in the months leading up to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the start of the war, Conti publicly expressed its support for the Russian war machine, drawing fury from its affiliates, many of whom were Ukrainian.

Soon after, Conti’s source code, as well as thousands of private messages, were leaked by disgruntled affiliates, which ultimately led to the group’s disbandment. Since the source code leaked, different other groups stepped in, with BlackByte likely being one of them.

This group is known for using vulnerable drivers to bypass security controls, and for deploying self-propagating ransomware with worm-like capabilities. It was also observed using known-good system binaries (LoLBins), and other legitimate commercial tools.
