CrowdStrike Unhappy With ‘Shady Commentary’ From Competitors After Outage

CrowdStrike’s president hit out at “shady” efforts by its cyber security rivals to scare its customers and steal market share in the month since its botched software update sparked a global IT outage. From a report: Michael Sentonas told the Financial Times that attempts by competitors to use the July 19 disruption to promote their own products were “misguided.” After criticism from rivals including SentinelOne and Trellix, the CrowdStrike executive said no vendor could “technically” guarantee that their own software would never cause a similar incident.

“Our industry is built on trust,” Sentonas said. For rivals to take advantage of the meltdown to push their own products “lets themselves down because, ultimately, people know really quickly fact from, possibly, some shady commentary.” Texas-based CrowdStrike had a reputation as many major companies’ first line of defense against cyber attacks, but the high-profile nature of its clients exacerbated the impact of July’s global disruption that shut down 8.5 million Windows devices. Insurers have estimated that losses from the disruption, which grounded flights and shut down hospital systems, could run into billions of dollars. Delta Air Lines, which canceled more than 6,000 flights, has estimated that the outages will cost it $500 million and has threatened litigation.

Joe Biden Defines ‘Patriot’

Peter Baker, supposedly “reporting” from the DNC in Chicago:

When the crowd members in the United Center first chanted, “Thank you, Joe! Thank you, Joe!” on Monday night, President Biden looked down, fought back tears and soaked in the admiration.

But he knew. He might not have wanted to admit it. But he knew. They were thanking him, yes, for what he accomplished during a lifetime in public service. But they were also thanking him, let’s be honest, for not running again.

It is hard to think of a more bittersweet moment for a president who spent more than a half-century on the stage only now to be involuntarily shown the exit. The warm bath of affection in Chicago, real as it may have been, could go just so far to salve the wounds of the past few weeks.

Fuck Peter Baker. What utter bullshit the word “involuntary” plays in that lede. Of course it was voluntary. Joe Biden is the President of the United States and is comfortable with the power that title affords. He was, even after his disastrous debate performance, only a few points behind in the polls. It was his call and his call alone to step aside — for the sake of his party, and more importantly, for the sake of the country he so obviously loves. And it’s now obvious he made the right call.

Very few presidents have ever been faced with such a clear decision between the good of the nation and the drive of their personal ambition. Biden’s ambition is legendary. Biden’s response to this moment was heroic.

The Times can give Peter Baker as much ink as they want as a columnist. But they should stop calling him a “reporter”. He’s nothing of the sort, and hasn’t been for a long time.

How to watch the Future Games Show at Gamescom 2024

We’re giving you the key details on how to watch the Future Games Show, the presenters, and what we can expect to see.

If you’re wondering how to watch the Future Games Show at Gamescom tonight then we have you covered with all the most pertinent information on how to do exactly that. We’ve also got some key details on who’s presenting it, what games are confirmed to appear, and more.

Cutting to the important stuff, you can watch the Future Games Show at Gamescom presented by Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (to give it its full name) tonight, August 21, at 4pm ET / 1pm PT / 8pm GMT / 10pm CEST. It’ll be streamed on YouTube, Twitch, FacebookXTikTokGamesRadar, BiliBili, and more – whatever platform you usually use, the showcase will be there. For convenience, we’ve embedded the YouTube link below.

But what’s actually going to be on show? Well, for starters, there are some belting hosts to guide you through the whole thing: Alex McKenna (Sadie Adler in Red Dead Redemption 2) and Ned Luke (Michael De Santa in Grand Theft Auto 5) will be steering the ship.

The Future Games Show at Gamescom will contain and cover a whole host of games across PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, and PC. In total, more than 50 titles from the likes of 2K, Tripwire Presents, Plaion, Nacon, and Rebellion will be present – but that’s not all. On top of that, there’s also going to be an exclusive look at the second season of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Do you want to hear about specific games? Well, we can tip you off about those too. Personally, I’m really excited about seeing more of Civilization 7 and Greedfall 2 during the show. The former will have some deep-dive interview coverage from Firaxis Games, while the latter will unveil more about the mysteries of the game’s world, one that’s steeped in magic, lost secrets, and wild and exotic creatures.

Elsewhere, and as well as new games being announced, the show is confirmed to feature Caravan SandWitch, PVKK, The Explorator, SPINE, Bionic Bay, and Phantom Line.

Beyond that, there are going to be some returning segments such as the ‘Indie Elevator Pitch’, where developers give quickfire pitches of their games, and the ‘Ones to Watch’ section, where the Future Games Show editorial team reveals what they are most excited about. Even after the main show ends, there’s more! The official post-show broadcast, the Future Games Show Expansion Pack, will air directly after and feature developer interviews, special guests, and some more surprises.

If this has got you excited – especially after Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live presentation yesterday, then tune in to the Future Games Show at Gamescom presentation later today at 4pm ET / 1pm PT / 8pm GMT.

Struggling with Google TV home screen errors? You’re not alone, but a fix is now arriving

Are parts of your Google TV interface failing to load? A fix is imminent

If you’re running the most recent versions of Google TV or Android TV, you might have encountered some issues with your homescreen. If you have, Google is aware of the issue and has created a fix for it – but it might not have reached your device just yet.

According to 9to5Google, the problems have affected multiple versions of Google TV: on the Chromecast with Google TV, on Walmart Onn boxes, and on some TVs with Android TV or Google TV built-in.

The problems are with homescreen content, such as your personalized For You recommendations. For some viewers, there is nothing For You: that part of the homescreen hasn’t been loading at all, instead displaying “Loading error: unable to load For You”. Other viewers have been finding that the same issues have been occurring with other parts of their home screen, leaving them empty or displaying a similar loading error.

What’s causing the Google TV homescreen loading error?

We don’t know for sure, but it looks internet-y – most likely a minor issue between your TV and Google’s servers, which would explain why Google has been able to identify and repair it relatively quickly. AS 9to5Google points out, a Google server outage last weekend produced similar errors, although those stopped happening once the outage was over.

Whatever the explanation, Google says it’s fixed it and that the fix began rolling out on August 16. In the meantime, if the error is still occurring while you wait for the update you may be able to get around it by logging out of your Google account and logging back in again. Some Redditors have been more successful than others, though, with some reporting that it’s worked and others saying that even factory resetting their TV hasn’t solved the problem.

“This update might take some time before it reaches everyone,” Google community manager Kelanfromgoogle says. “We appreciate your patience!”

Nomad’s updated Stand One Max charger fixes an annoying design flaw

Gimme that excellent desk clock action while charging all the things. | Image: Nomad

Nomad is course-correcting from a small design blunder last year on its three-in-one MagSafe charging stand. Like its predecessor, the new Stand One Max for 2024 is a wireless multi-charger for a compatible iPhone, Apple Watch, and set of AirPods. However, now you can charge all of those devices with your phone in landscape orientation, allowing you to use Apple’s nifty StandBy mode for glanceable information like the time and weather. The new stand is also Qi2-compatible, and at $150, it’s actually $30 cheaper than the original’s launch price, which I love to see.

Other than that, the new Stand One Max (which Nomad calls “third-gen” to align with other models in its lineup, even though it’s only the second version) has a lot in common with the original. It comes in silver or black, includes a color-matched 6.6-foot / 2-meter detachable USB-C cable (but not the required 30W power adapter), fast-charges compatible Apple Watches, and is made from metal and glass. The new model weighs just a touch more at 1.9 pounds (versus the original’s 1.8 pounds), and that’s likely due to the base being about 0.75 inches longer to accommodate the watch charger’s new location, clearing the path for a horizontally mounted phone up top.

Qi2 may not be commonplace on phones just yet, with only one phone supporting it so far and some imminently launching flagships notably lacking it. But the dream is that one day, in a (hopefully) near future, chargers like the Stand One Max will enable equally fast charging of up to 15W on both Androids and iPhones — all with the convenience of magnets that lock your phone in place. Chargers that support Qi2 are already becoming pretty prevalent from a variety of brands, so if you’re going to spend some significant coin on one of Nomad’s fancy home multi-chargers, it’s nice that it’s also Qi2-capable.

Nomad Launches Stand One Max Qi2 Charging Hub for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods

Nomad today introduced its latest multi-device charger, debuting a new version of the Stand One Max with Qi2 support. Rather than continuing to use MagSafe, Nomad is transitioning to Qi2, the latest Qi charging standard that is able to charge iPhones at ‌MagSafe‌ speeds.

The Stand One Max can charge an iPhone at up to 15W, and we were able to test the charger out ahead of launch. An iPhone 15 Pro Max charged from 0 to 39 percent in an hour, which is essentially identical to ‌MagSafe‌ charging speeds.

The Stand One Max features an upright charging base for the ‌iPhone‌ with a small charging arm for the Apple Watch and a Qi-based platform for charging the AirPods. It’s a compact design that takes up little room on a desk, and as with all Nomad products, it is well-made. Nomad had a prior version of the Stand One Max, but the new version moves the Apple Watch charger lower to allow for compatibility with the ‌iPhone‌’s StandBy mode.

The Stand One Max is crafted from solid metal and it has a shiny glass cover panel. It can be purchased in silver or carbide colors, and the close to 2 pound weight adds stability, as does the rubber bottom. An ‌iPhone‌ can be positioned on the magnetic base in portrait or landscape mode, so StandBy is supported. The angle of the charging base cannot be adjusted, but it is tilted back slightly for a comfortable viewing position on a desktop or nightstand.

In addition to charging a MagSafe-compatible ‌iPhone‌ at up to 15W, the Stand One Max has an Apple Watch fast charger so that it can charge the Series 7 or later at the fastest possible speed. The position of the Apple Watch charger allows for Night Stand mode to be used, which also wasn’t possible with the prior iteration. The AirPods charger charges at 5W, and there is a small indentation to guide positioning.

The relocated position of the Apple Watch charger is convenient because it no longer prevents the ‌iPhone‌ from charging in landscape mode, and there is no loss of functionality. The AirPods charger is pushed back behind the Apple Watch charger, and the overall footprint is about the same. It is a better design than the prior Stand One Max, and it is less expensive with the transition to Qi2.

The new Stand One Max is priced at $150, which is $30 lower than the price of the prior ‌MagSafe‌ version. You will need to supply your own 30W power adapter, but a USB-C power cable is included. The Stand One Max can be purchased from the Nomad website as of today.

Nomad is also offering a flash sale on its Base One Max chargers this week, discounting them by 30 percent with the promo code BM130. The Base One Max has a flat charging base so it can charge non-MagSafe smartphones.Tag: NomadThis article, “Nomad Launches Stand One Max Qi2 Charging Hub for iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods” first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums
