Boeing will try to fly its troubled Starliner capsule back to Earth next week

The two astronauts who launched on Starliner will stay behind on the International Space Station.

NASA and Boeing are proceeding with final preparations to undock the Starliner spacecraft from the International Space Station next Friday, September 6, to head for landing at White Sands Space Harbor in southern New Mexico.

Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who were supposed to return to Earth inside Starliner, will remain behind on the space station after NASA decided last week to conclude the Boeing test flight without its crew on board. NASA officials decided it was too risky to put the astronauts on Starliner after the spacecraft suffered thruster failures during its flight to the space station in early June.

Instead, Wilmore and Williams will come home on a SpaceX Dragon capsule no earlier than February, extending their planned stay on the space station from eight days to eight months. Flying on autopilot, the Starliner spacecraft is scheduled to depart the station at approximately 6:04 pm EDT (22:04 UTC) on September 6. The capsule will fire its engines to drop out of orbit and target a parachute-assisted landing in New Mexico at 12:03 am EDT (04:03 UTC) on September 7, NASA said in a statement Thursday.

Iranian hackers work with ransomware gangs to break into companies via VPN and firewall tools

Patch your firewalls and VPNs now, because they could be exploited by Iranian hackers.

Firewalls and VPNs are being used as a point of entry for Iranian state-sponsored hackers, tracked as Pioneer Kitten, looking to gain access to American schools, banks, hospitals, defense sector firms, and government agencies.

The attackers are gaining access through vulnerable devices from Check Point, Citrix, and Palo Alto Networks, according to a joint statement released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Department of Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).

Pioneer Kitten’s objectives are likely to be intelligence gathering operations to steal data from US defense contractors in line with the wider aims of the Iranian government, as well as fundraising by providing access to ransomware groups.

State-sponsored hackers team up with ransomware gangs

“The FBI assesses a significant percentage of these threat actors’ operations against US organizations are intended to obtain and develop network access to then collaborate with ransomware affiliate actors to deploy ransomware,” the advisory says.

Pioneer Kitten (also tracked as Fox Kitten, UNC757, Parisite, RUBIDIUM and Lemon Sandstorm) has been observed working with ransomware groups ALPHV/BlackCat, NoEscape, and Ransomhouse to provide access to their targets.

The has been exploiting a number of known vulnerabilities, such as CVE-2024-24919 to exploit devices using Check Point Security Gateways, as well as CVE-2024-3400 to take advantage of unpatched Palo Alto Networks PAN-OS and GlobalProtect VPNs, disabling antivirus and moving laterally as they go. The group has also been targeting organizations based in Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan.

Another Iranian state-sponsored group has also been acting on behalf of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps to gather intelligence on US satellite communications using a custom built malware dubbed Tickler.

“The FBI assesses a significant percentage of these threat actors’ operations against US organizations are intended to obtain and develop network access to then collaborate with ransomware affiliate actors to deploy ransomware,” the statement continued. “The FBI observed use of this tradecraft against U.S. academic and defense sectors, but it could theoretically be used against any organization. The FBI and CISA warn that if these actors compromised your organization, they may be leveraging your cloud services accounts to conduct malicious cyber activity and target other victims.”

Linux 6.12 To Optionally Display A QR Code During Kernel Panics

New submitter meisdug writes: A new feature has been submitted for inclusion in Linux 6.12, allowing the display of a QR code when a kernel panic occurs using the DRM Panic handler. This QR code can capture detailed error information that is often missed in traditional text-based panic messages, making it more user-friendly. The feature, written in Rust, is optional and can be enabled via a specific build switch. This implementation follows similar ideas from other operating systems and earlier discussions in the Linux community.

iPhone 16 Pro’s Rumored Gold Titanium Color Revealed by This Mockup

Just a few weeks ahead of Apple unveiling the iPhone 16 series, we potentially have an early look at a new color option for the Pro models.

9to5Mac today shared a mockup image of the rumored gold finish for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, based on information provided by a previously-accurate source. The publication believes this image is “likely” accurate.

iPhone 15 Pro models were the first highest-end iPhones to not be available in gold since the iPhone X. The devices are offered in four finishes, including Natural Titanium, Blue Titanium, White Titanium, and Black Titanium. The addition of a gold color option for iPhone 16 Pro models would mark a return to the norm.

There have been many rumors about the iPhone 16 Pro models being offered in a gold or bronze option, which is expected to replace Blue Titanium. Apple’s event on September 9 is fast approaching, so we’ll find out for sure soon.Related Roundup: iPhone 16 ProTag: 9to5MacThis article, “iPhone 16 Pro’s Rumored Gold Titanium Color Revealed by This Mockup” first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Google is rolling out more election-related safeguards in YouTube, search and AI

As the US speeds toward one of the most consequential elections in its 248-year history, Google is rolling out safeguards to ensure users get reliable information. In addition to the measures it announced late last year, the company said on Friday that it’s adding election-related guardrails to YouTube, Search, Google Play and AI products.
YouTube will add information panels above the search results for at least some federal election candidates. The modules, likely similar to those you see when searching the web for prominent figures, will include the candidates’ basic details like their political party and a link to Google Search for more info. The company says the panels may also include a link to the person’s official website (or other channel). As Election Day (November 5) approaches, YouTube’s homepage will also show reminders on where and how to vote.
Google Search will include aggregated voter registration resources from state election offices for all users. Google is sourcing that data through a partnership with Democracy Works, a nonpartisan nonprofit that works with various companies and organizations “to help voters whenever and wherever they need it.”
Meanwhile, the Google Play Store will add a new badge that indicates an app is from an official government agency. The company outlines its requirements for apps that “communicate government information” in a developer help document. Approved applications that have submitted the required forms are eligible for the “official endorsement signified by a clear visual treatment on the Play Store.”
As for generative AI, which can be prone to hallucinations that would make Jerry Garcia blush, Google is expanding its election-related restrictions, which were announced late last year. They’ll include disclosures for ads created or generated using AI, content labels for generated content and embedded SynthID digital watermarking for AI-made text, audio, images and video. Initially described as being for Gemini (apps and on the web), the election guardrails will apply to Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated summaries for Live Chat, Gems (custom chatbots with user-created instructions) and Gemini image generation. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/google-is-rolling-out-more-election-related-safeguards-in-youtube-search-and-ai-190422568.html?src=rss
