The answers to today’s Quordle, game #944, are…

APTLYLEVERSTORKWIDOW

There are four truly uncommon letters within Wordle, and therefore within Quordle: X, Q, Z and J. These appear far less frequently than the other 22 characters; in fact, as my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, if you had the total appearances for all four it’s still lower than that for the next least common letter in the list, V. None of those four appear here, but the next three – V, W and K – all do, and that makes today’s game a little harder than some. What’s more, W is repeated in WIDOW, and V appears in LEVER, in-between another repeated letter. Tough gig.

My rating: EasyMy score: Perfect

It must be a difficult job getting the balance right in Strands, but it’s fair to say that the difficulty level can swerve all over the place. The theme clue is one of the key reasons for that – sometimes it’s cryptic, sometimes a lot more straightforward. Today’s, ‘Into the woods’, leaves very little room for confusion as to what is needed, and once you found one of the easier answers – PINE, WILLOW or BEECH, for instance, you’ll have had that suspicion confirmed. After that it will just have been a case of ticking them off one by one, which is what I was able to do here with little fuss.

NYT Connections today — hints and answers for Sunday, August 25 (game #441)

Looking for NYT Connections answers and hints? Here’s all you need to know to solve today’s game, plus my commentary on the puzzles.

Good morning! Let’s play Connections, the NYT’s clever word game that challenges you to group answers in various categories. It can be tough, so read on if you need clues.

What should you do once you’ve finished? Why, play some more word games of course. I’ve also got daily Wordle hints and answers, Strands hints and answers and Quordle hints and answers articles if you need help for those too.

SPOILER WARNING: Information about NYT Connections today is below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to know the answers.

We’re firmly in spoiler territory now, but read on if you want to know what the four theme answers are for today’s NYT Connections puzzles…

NYT Connections today (game #441) – hint #2 – group answers

What are the answers for today’s NYT Connections groups?

YELLOW: HOPPING MADGREEN: STATUSBLUE: WORDS THAT MAKE UP THE ACRONYM “HVAC”PURPLE: ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE FOLDING

Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE THEM.

NYT Connections today (game #441) – the answers

The answers to today’s Connections, game #441, are…

YELLOW: HOPPING MAD BOILING, FUMING, LIVID, STEAMINGGREEN: STATUS POSITION, RANKING, STANDING, STATIONBLUE: WORDS THAT MAKE UP THE ACRONYM “HVAC” AIR, CONDITIONING, HEATING, VENTILATIONPURPLE: ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE FOLDING BAKING, LAUNDRY, ORIGAMI, POKER

My rating: ModerateMy score: 1 mistake

It’s always interesting to see the order in which the NYT places the groups in Connections. Today, for instance, purple – the most difficult – is ‘Activities that involve folding’, which I solved first out of all the groups. Blue is supposedly easier, but that was the acronym HVAC, a term I was entirely unaware of and could only solve by default. I guess one person’s difficult answer is another’s easy one…

Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Saturday, 24 August, game #440)

YELLOW: VISUAL INTERFACE DISPLAY, MONITOR, SCREEN, TERMINALGREEN: BURLESQUE WEAR BOA, CORSET, FAN, GLOVESBLUE: BEIGE SHADES BUFF, CREAM, FAWN, TANPURPLE: LANGUAGE HOMOPHONES BASK, CHECK, FINISH, TIE

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final one, as you’ll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It’s a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It’s playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

How Should Cybersecurity Evolve After Crowdstrike’s Outage?

Microsoft will meet with CrowdStrike and other security companies” on September 10, reports CNBC, to “discuss ways to evolve” the industry after a faulty CrowdStrike software update in July caused millions of Windows computers to crash:

[An anonymous Microsoft executive] said participants at the Windows Endpoint Security Ecosystem Summit will explore the possibility of having applications rely more on a part of Windows called user mode instead of the more privileged kernel mode… Attendees at Microsoft’s September 10 event will also discuss the adoption of eBPF technology, which checks if programs will run without triggering system crashes, and memory-safe programming languages such as Rust, the executive said.

Wednesday Crowdstrike argued no cybersecurity vendor could “technically” guarantee their software wouldn’t cause a similar incident.

On a possibly related note, long-time Slashdot reader 278MorkandMindy shares their own thoughts:

The “year of the Linux desktop” is always just around the corner, somewhat like nuclear fusion. Will Windows 11, with its general advert and telemetry BS, along with the recall feature, FINALLY push “somewhat computer literate” types like myself onto Linux?

Canoo is down to one co-founder as its CTO reportedly leaves

Image: Canoo

EV startup Canoo has lost co-founder and chief technology officer Sohel Merchant and is moving its operations out of Los Angeles, according to two reports from TechCrunch this week, citing unnamed sources.
Merchant took over the CTO position in 2021, when the company’s CTO left, along with two other co-founders. One of those who remained, chief designer Richard Kim, departed last year. With Merchant now reportedly gone, chief engineer Christoph Kuttner is the last founder standing at Canoo, according to TechCrunch yesterday.

Canoo wrote in a quarterly SEC filing on August 14th that it was “permanently” dropping its headcount as part of a reorganization plan for its Torrance, California facility, and offering to move “approximately 137” of 194 employees from there to either Oklahoma or Texas. Then, earlier this week, it told employees during a company meeting that it was shutting down its LA office, TechCrunch wrote on Thursday.
