The answers to today’s Quordle, game #946, are…

ABYSSDAILYAGONYMUSKY

ABYSS is a nasty word to appear in Quordle or Wordle. All of the letters are in the wrong places. Take a look at my analysis of every Wordle answer for proof: the results there will transfer over to Quordle, and they show that B is only really common at the start of a word, not second, Y generally only appears at the end, not the middle, and S… well, S is common in most positions but it’s overwhelmingly more likely to be at the start than elsewhere. Add in the fact that it has a repeated letter and this is a potentially tough word. The good news is that the other three are all fairly straightforward!

The answers to today’s Strands, game #177, are…

PEPPERSZUCCHINIEGGPLANTTOMATOESONIONSSPANGRAM: RATATOUILLE

My rating: ModerateMy score: Perfect

As Strands’ theme clues go, today’s is among the most cryptic we’ve had – until you know the answer, of course. ‘Pixar fare’ refers to the classic animated movie RATATOUILLE, which forms the spangram, but the actual theme of the game is not cartoon films but rather the French dish ratatouille, or rather the ingredients for it.

Whether that held you back or not will probably have depended on how much time you spent simply looking randomly for answers. I found PEPPERS and ZUCCHINI without actively trying to, and that was enough to make me realize that I should start looking for vegetables. I still couldn’t see the connection with Pixar, but it didn’t matter, because once I found EGGPLANT and TOMATOES the spangram revealed itself too.

The answers to today’s Connections, game #443, are…

YELLOW: EXPLOSIVE SOUND BOOM, CRASH, ROAR, THUNDERGREEN: CHILI PEPPER QUALITY FIRE, HEAT, KICK, SPICEBLUE: CLASSIC BARBERSHOP SUPPLIES BRUSH, CAPE, CLIPPERS, GELPURPLE: KINDS OF CARDS BASEBALL, MAGIC, SET, TAROT

My rating: HardMy score: 3 mistakes

Phew! I narrowly avoided yet another Connections fail today – but it owed a lot to luck. Once again I lost guesses on red herrings – I thought that maybe there was a basketball connection (HEAT, THUNDER, CLIPPERS, MAGIC) but that was wrong, or that there was something to do with wizards/witches (CAPE, MAGIC, TAROT? FIRE??) but that was (rightly) even more wrong. And then finally I guessed a hairdresser-related one with BRUSH, CLIPPERS, GEL and, er, SET) and was nearly right.

With no chances left I needed to get them all correct first guess now, and looking around spotted the yellow ‘Explosive sound’ group. Returning to hairdressers/barbershops I added CAPE and got blue, then put four hot-sounding words together for the Chili pepper group. It was a close-run thing, but I scraped home.

Yesterday’s NYT Connections answers (Monday, 26 August, game #442)

YELLOW: OFFICIAL SANCTIONING APPROVAL, BLESSING, CONSENT, SUPPORTGREEN: TORUS-SHAPED THINGS BAGEL, LIFESAVER, TIRE, WREATHBLUE: BAD GOLF SHOTS HOOK, SHANK, SLICE, WHIFFPURPLE: FOOTWEAR MINUS “ER” SOUND LOAF, SLIP, SNEAK, WADE

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult.

On the plus side, you don’t technically need to solve the final one, as you’ll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What’s more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room.

It’s a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.

It’s playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

Want great cheap noise-cancelling headphones? SoundMagic makes amazing value audio gear, and now it’s finally doing ANC cans

At last, SoundMagic turns its talents to ANC over-ears

We really rate SoundMagic thanks to products such as its SoundMagic E11BT and SoundMagic E80D earbuds. But while the firm makes a wide range of headphones and earbuds that punch way above their price tag, there’s been a significant gap in the range to date: ANC over-ears. So we’re pleased to see the new SoundMagic P58BT ANC, which fills that gap in some style.

These headphones aren’t just about the ANC. They should also be good for gaming and video watching thanks to their Gaming Mode, a low-latency mode that eliminates the usual Bluetooth lag. But of course it’s how they sound that matters most, and there are plenty of reasons to be cheerful about that.

SoundMagic P58BT ANC: key features and pricing

The P58BT ANC features 40mm drivers with a large neodymium iron boron magnet, precision-engineered magnetic components and a composite vibrating diaphragm that SoundMagic says delivers accurate and spacious sound. The ANC here is hybrid with full ANC, transparency and adaptive modes and delivers up to 28dB noise reduction, and there’s CVC noise reduction on the mics for clear calling.

The design of the P58BT is quite different from most other over-ears, including the firm’s existing models. They’re slightly tilted oval shapes, which SoundMagic says delivers much better comfort during longer listening sessions. The firm also says that the silicone headbands and earpads aren’t just sweat-proof and water-resistant but also makeup-proof, which is handy, and they’ve been designed to be comfortable for glasses wearers too. At 305g they’re fairly lightweight for their size.

The Bluetooth version here is 5.3 with multi-point pairing, and you can expect up to 60 hours with ANC off and 35 hours with it on. The packaging also includes an audio cable for wired listening and the obligatory USB-C for charging.

There are two color options: Black and Platinum Silver.

The new SoundMagic P58BT ANC is available today from Amazon and other selected retailers in the UK and EU for £79.99/€79.99. US pricing and availability will be confirmed soon.

Microsoft Backtracks on Deprecating the 39-Year-Old Windows Control Panel

Microsoft has retracted or clarified its statement regarding the deprecation of Windows Control Panel, according to changes made to a support document. The original text, which stated that the Control Panel was “in the process of being deprecated in favor of the Settings app,” has been revised. The new version now indicates that “many of the settings in Control Panel are in the process of being migrated to the Settings app.” This modification came after widespread media coverage of the initial announcement. It remains unclear whether this change reflects a shift in Microsoft’s plans or a correction of an erroneous statement.
