Proton Drive from Swiss technology company Proton AG now has a Professional tier. It joins services like Proton Mail, Proton VPN, and Proton Pass to receive professional tiers, letting teams select a single individual product that they need rather than signing up for everything Proton offers Additionally, all Proton Drive Business suite users now enjoy 1TB of storage from the original 500GB. That plan offers Proton’s whole portfolio of products, including email, calendar, VPN and a password manager.
If you’re interested in Proton Drive Professional, you can get it for $5.99 a month right now. It’s a discount of 40% from the original price of $9.99. Besides offering 1TB of storage, users also enjoy a 365-day file version history feature. This means you can restore files up to versions from a year before. Proton Drive also has its own equivalent to Google Docs called Proton Docs.
The company has released two new products this year in addition to a host of other updates to its offerings: Proton Scribe and Proton Wallet. Proton Scribe is a privacy-first writing assistant similar to Grammarly and is integrated into Proton Mail, but you can run it locally on your computer. Date Everything! has a perfect title. It’s a dating sim in which you’ll be able to date humanoid manifestations of many objects throughout your home. You won’t have to wait too long to check it out, as it’s coming to Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on October 24.
This project from developer Sassy Chap Games and publisher Team17 features more than 100 voice-acted dateable characters, from a vacuum cleaner to a shelf and even your own sense of existential dread. That’s deep, man. According to the trailer description, each dateable object has its own story to tell and could become a lover, friend or enemy.

EV charging gets another massive funding push from Biden administration

The Biden administration says that the number of EV charging stations in the US has doubled since 2021 as it announces another round of grants for states looking to install more charging locations.
The administration claims that there are now over 192,000 publicly available charging ports in the US, with approximately 1,000 new public chargers being added each week. That’s up from approximately 100,000 ports that were in operation at the outset of 2021 when President Joe Biden first took office.
EV charging is often held up as a culprit in the frustratingly slow adoption of electric vehicles in the United States, with EV owners frequently citing in surveys infrequent charging or broken equipment as one of the pain points in their experience. That said, the charging experience has improved in recent years, as thousands of new chargers have come online.

Since his election, Biden has vowed to build 500,000 chargers by 2030 as a way to spur more EV sales, including $7.5 billion for charging expansion in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. But the process has been slow going; in March, The Washington Post reported that only seven charging stations with 38 ports have been opened under the administration’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. (A spokesperson for the Federal Highway Administration did not respond to a request for updated figures.)
Today, the administration is releasing an additional $521 million to 30 states for further charging installation. The awards are for state programs that missed out on the first round of funding and reapplied for round two.
According to the Electrification Coalition, which tracks EV funding, many of the projects receiving funding are focused on “creating access to charging for rural areas, disadvantaged communities and multi-unit dwellings, as well as charging for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.” In total, the money will go toward the creation of “more than” 9,200 new charging ports across the US, according to the Federal Highway Administration.
Examples include $102 million to the California Department of Transportation to build both EV charging and hydrogen fueling for freight hauling along 2,500 miles of highways. The Maryland Clean Energy Center will receive $33 million for EV charging in “rural, urban, and disadvantaged communities.” And the Seminole Tribe of Florida will get $933,600 to build seven charging stations across the reservation.
The funding push comes as many automakers have responded to slower-than-expected EV sales growth by canceling models or stretching out timelines. EV sales are still ticking upward, but the lack of affordable models and lingering charging headaches are still helping to depress growth.

Patelco confirms thousands of customers hit in ransomware attack
Many Patelco customers may have had their sensitive data taken, company confirms.
The ransomware attack on Patelco Credit Union appears to have meant the company lost sensitive data on hundreds of thousands of customers.
The firm confirmed the news via a new filing submitted with the Maine Office of the Attorney General, stating 726,000 of its customers have had their data taken.
The stolen data included user’s full names, Social Security Numbers (SSN), driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, and email addresses, which is more than enough intel to mount identity theft, phishing, or wire fraud.

The American not-for-profit financial cooperative reported suffering a ransomware attack in May 2024 which forced it to shut down parts of its IT infrastructure to contain the incident. It took the company roughly two weeks to get back on its feet and resume operations.
At the time, it was unknown who the hackers were, or if they obtained any sensitive information from the company endpoints, as is the usual case in ransomware attacks.
Soon after, RansomHub, a group that spun out of the defunct ALPHV, claimed responsibility for the attack, and published all of the stolen data on its extortion portal.
As a credit union, Patelco offers many of the same financial services as a traditional bank, including savings accounts, checking accounts, loans, mortgages, credit cards, and investment services. However, unlike banks, credit unions like Patelco are member-owned and operated, meaning profits are returned to members in the form of lower fees, better interest rates, and dividends.
Patelco is one of the larger credit unions in the U.S., serving hundreds of thousands of members and managing billions of dollars in assets. According to BleepingComputer, its assets exceed $9 billion.
Patelco is offering two years of identity and credit monitoring services for free, through Experian, to minimize the damage.
