Google Meet will now use Gemini AI to automatically take meeting notes for you

A year on from its announcement, Google Meet “Take notes for me” feature is now rolling out.

A new Google Meet update is looking to help users focus on their meetings more than ever with the ability to take notes automatically.

First announced in August 2023, the new “Take notes for me” tool, powered by the company’s Gemini AI platform, has finally begun rolling out to Google Workspace users now.

However not all video conferencing users will be able to utilize the tool immediately, as it will initially only be available to Google Workspace customers with the Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education Premium, or AI Meetings & Messaging add-ons.

“It can be challenging to stay on top of and engaged with meeting discussions while also trying to keep a record of the meeting and subsequent follow-ups,” a Google Workspace Updates blog post announcing the launch said.

““Take notes for me” is an AI-powered feature in Google Meet that automatically takes notes, allowing you to focus on discussion, collaboration, and presentation during your meetings.”

The feature, which will be turned on by default, but can also be activated by selecting the pencil icon in the top right corner of the screen, will automatically capture meeting notes in a Google Docs file, saving it to the Google Drive account of the person owning the meeting.

The notes document will also be attached to the calendar event, meaning your colleagues or co-workers within your organization can also access them.

When the meeting is finished, Google Meet will send out an email with a link to the notes to both the meeting owner, and anyone else who has “take notes for me” enabled.

Anyone joining the meeting late will be able to catch up quickly with a “summary so far” recapping what has already taken place. For now, the feature will also only be available when using Google Meet on a computer or laptop, and meetings must be conducted in spoken English.

The launch is the latest step in Google Meet’s plan to be more effective and useful for customers everywhere.

This includes the AI Meetings and Messaging add-on, a suite of AI-powered tools it hopes will make workers more efficient and lead to more productive collaboration across businesses.

Costing $10 per user, per month across “most” Google Workspace plans, the plan also includes an expanded “Translate for me” feature which will automatically detect and translate captions in Google Meet calls, and an expansion of Google Chat spaces up to 500,000 members for those company-wide chats.

Gmail is also getting improved voice prompts allowing users to easily send emails on the go, as well as an instant polish tool able to convert rough notes into a complete email with a single click.

Sonos’ next soundbar gets a reported new name, and good news for its release date

Sonos is reportedly preparing to launch a new high-end soundbar fairly soon once more, along with a new sub too.

It’s no secret that the ongoing issues with the Sonos app have delayed the launch of key products including the Arc 2 soundbar: Sonos said as much to investors, although it didn’t name the specific products. But it looks like the launches are finally moving forward. According to a new leak from a source with a relatively reliable history, there’s a new Sonos Sub and Sonos Arc on their way imminently.

The leaker is Arsène Lupin, who posted on X that “The products will be marketed as ‘Sub 4’ and ‘Arc Ultra’. The Sub 4 features a matte finish, dual force-canceling woofers, and is available in white and black.”

Lupin added: “Arc Ultra is a soundbar which is also available in Black and White. It has what Sonos call a ‘Sound Motion technology’ which gives ‘a balanced sound that surround you precisely from every direction’.”

Sonos ($SONO) has begun preparations to launch its two delayed products after its updated app was met with numerous bugs. The products will be marketed as “Sub 4” and “Arc Ultra”. The Sub 4 features a matte finish, dual force-canceling woofers, and is available in white and blackAugust 20, 2024

When might the Sonos Arc Ultra and Sonos Sub 4 launch?

The leak doesn’t include launch dates, but Sonos will be keen to get both products onto the market as soon as possible: its financial predictions for this year were based on the expectation that new products – not just the Sonos Ace headphones, but also the second-generation Arc – would generate significant revenues for the firm. With the ongoing app updates munching through cash like a soundbar-shaped Very Hungry Caterpillar, for Sonos that means these two products can’t come soon enough.

Images purporting to be the Arc Ultra leaked last month, and while its looks haven’t changed much, it appears to support Bluetooth audio playback – a first for a Sonos soundbar – and will reportedly include tech from the speaker manufacturer Mayht, which Sonos bought way back in 2022.

Mayht’s tech promises bigger sound from smaller speakers, and much lower frequency power than you’d expect: before being acquired by Sonos, the firm claimed that a subwoofer-free system using its tech could deliver frequencies down to around 30Hz, which is very low for a soundbar. Although naturally Sonos will also happily sell you a sub if even that isn’t low enough: the current Sonos Sub Gen 3 goes down to 25Hz, and we assume the Sub 4 will be even more impactful, since it needs to pair with an Arc Ultra soundbar with lots of bass.

Team TechRadar has high hopes for the Sonos Arc Ultra – the Sonos Arc still ranks among the best soundbars thanks to its finely balanced sound, but rivals can now do even better spatial sound, and it sounds like the Ultra aims to address that. We loved the spatial sound of the Sonos Era 300, especially when paired with the Sonos Arc in Sonos’ ultimate home theater configuration, and the Arc Ultra looks likely to take that to the next level.

You can now move your Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music with just a few taps

Apple has simplified the process of switching to YouTube Music by facilitating fast transfers of your Apple Music playlists.

If you’re an Apple Music subscriber but have been eyeing up switching to YouTube Music, Apple has some good news: you can now transfer your playlists to YouTube’s music service with just a few taps.

According to a new support document on Apple’s website, you’re now able to copy your Apple Music playlists to YouTube Music using Apple’s Data and Privacy web page. All you need to do is log in, then select ‘Request to transfer a copy of your data’ underneath the ‘Transfer a copy of your data’ header and follow the on-screen prompts. Apple says this process could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how many playlists you want to include.

Once the process is complete, you’ll see all of your playlists in YouTube Music’s Library tab. If any songs are missing from your playlists, it could be that they’re not available in YouTube Music. Your playlists won’t be removed from Apple Music after the transfer, and if you cancel the process before it finishes, any playlists that have already been copied to YouTube Music will also remain there.

Note that for this transfer process to be available, you’ll need to have an active subscription to either Apple Music or iTunes Match, as well as a YouTube Music account.

Easing the transition

Although Apple’s support document is titled ‘Transfer a copy of your Apple Music playlists to another service,’ YouTube Music is the only supported service for now. Yet while the vague wording of the header might imply that other top-rated streaming services could be supported in the future, there’s no word yet on whether Apple is planning to allow a similar process for apps like Spotify and Tidal.

It’s been a fairly positive year for YouTube Music so far. YouTube owner Google is working on integrating its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) into YouTube Music, giving users a fresh method for discovering music and queueing up tunes. And there’s a new ‘hum to search’ feature that could provide a much simpler way to identify a song when all you can remember is how it sounds.

Whether these new features will be enough to spark a mass exodus from Apple Music to YouTube’s alternative remains to be seen. But if you are tempted to make the change, Apple Music’s new switching feature should make the transition significantly easier.
