iOS 18: Add Multiple Pages to Control Center

iOS 18 overhauls the Control Center by letting you reorder, resize, and remove buttons, access a controls gallery, and add multiple screens, moving away from the single-screen layout of recent years. In this article we are going to show you how you can create dedicated pages for various control types, such as connectivity, HomeKit devices, and Accessibility options.

The new Control Center comes pre-configured with multiple default pages, which you can freely customize, add to, or remove. The system accommodates up to 15 separate screens, offering unprecedented flexibility when compared to previous versions of iOS.

Navigation between these pages is easy. You can swipe up and down through Control Center, tap small icons on the right side of the display, or hold and scrub through these icons for quick access. The following steps explain how to add additional pages to your Control Center.

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to launch Control Center.
Tap the circle icon at the bottom of the icon list, which indicates a new blank page.
Tap Add a Control to open the Controls Gallery.
Use the search field at the top, or browse the controls with a finger scroll to find the control that you want to include on the page, then tap it.

Using the corner anchor, drag with your finger to expand the control if you wish.
When finished, tap a space on the page to exit editing mode.

Control Center intelligently assigns icons to each page based on its content. When controls exceed the available space on a page, or if a resized control becomes too large, Control Center automatically creates a new page and relocates the excess controls. Bear in mind that the option to create a new page only appears when an existing page is approximately half full, ensuring adequate spacing between icons and maintaining a clean, organized layout.

I’d love iPhone 16’s ultra-fast charge to be a battery game-changer, but the real revolution is coming later

Solid-state batteries could transform the battery experience of future iPhones but not the iPhone 16

When Apple unveils its anticipated iPhone 16 lineup at its September 10 Glowtime event, it’ll likely tout innovations in photography, design, and especially AI (that’s Apple Intelligence), but I’ll be listening for news on a pair of key features: battery life and charge speeds. Sadly, I don’t expect the major innovation I want, at least not this year.

Unlike the leaps that artificial intelligence is making across the smartphone spectrum, battery technology’s pace of innovation is more tectonic. Sure, there have been updates in capacities, efficiency, and safety, but the lion’s share of battery life extension we get in our best iPhones comes through software management, including AI that, as Apple told me some years ago, works in the background to manage battery use and longevity.

(Image credit: Future / Lance Ulanoff)

This year’s expected iPhone 16 line could possibly get larger batteries in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Adding 5.7% and 9.2% larger batteries in these phones is likely a matter of shrinking components and leaving more room, not some power breakthrough. The current batteries are reportedly 4,383 mAh on the iPhone 15 Pro and 4,444 mAh on the iPhone 15 Pro Max (Apple doesn’t publicize its own battery capacity). I don’t think these increases bring the new iPhone 16 family to 5,000 mAh, though I’d love to see them get there this year.

There are also whispers that the lineup will finally get ultra-fast charging capabilities. This means switching from, say, a 50% charge in 30 minutes with a 20W charger to, perhaps, 100% in 65 minutes with a rumored new 43W ultrafast charger (one, by the way, that will surely not ship for free with any iPhone).

I, like everyone else, will welcome these changes but they’re not the battery innovation I really want. Surely, it’s time for smartphone batteries to make the shift from a day of charge to a week, and to maintain full recharge capacity for the full lifespan of the phone.

The future of batteries

Some of this is possible with a technology that reports suggest Apple and others are working on right now: Solid-state batteries. As the name implies, these batteries replace the liquid in traditional lithium-ion batteries, typically liquid electrolytes that produce the chemical reaction (moving ions) to make power, with a solid material like ceramics or silicon.

Potential benefits of solid-state batteries include increased safety (liquid is more volatile than solid), more energy out of a smaller space thanks to greater density, better longevity, faster charging, and a lower carbon footprint.

Sounds good, right? Rumors claim Apple is working on this technology for future iPhones, but I do not mean the immediate future. There is essentially zero chance that solid-state batteries will arrive in the iPhone 16. Some prognosticators believe Apple is eyeing 2026, which would mean the iPhone 18. Maybe that’s possible. However, the current limitation of solid-state batteries is size. Yes, even smartphone-sized solid-state batteries might be a problem.

There is essentially zero chance that solid-state batteries will arrive in the iPhone 16.

TDK, the company that supplies most of Apple’s iPhone batteries, is hard at work on solid-state battery technology, but its recent breakthroughs are only usable in watch-sized batteries. The ceramic that TDK is using in these batteries is far more fragile than what you’d find in a traditional lithium-ion iPhone battery, and growing solid-state battery technology up to smartphone size might not be possible for some time. Not until Apple and TDK can figure out how to make a thin, lightweight, and ultra-strong housing for the solid-state battery, one that can fit in a traditional iPhone without making it twice the size of an iPhone 16 Pro Max.

We can expect some worthwhile battery updates in the iPhone 16, but our battery lives won’t change until TDK and other researchers figure out how to increase solid-state batteries to your best iPhone’s size. That won’t be the iPhone 16; it might be the iPhone 18, but is more likely somewhere in the iPhone 20 range.

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath is stepping down amid flagging sales

Photo: Getty Images

Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath is resigning from his position and will be replaced by Michael Lohscheller, who previously served as CEO of Stellantis-owned carmaker Opel, the automaker announced Tuesday.
The move comes as Polestar has struggled to keep its finances up amid a wider slowdown in EV sales growth. It has gone through several rounds of layoffs and recently saw Volvo drastically reduce its stake in the company. Polestar is expected to report its second quarter earnings on August 29th. The company’s stock is currently selling for less than $1.

Ingenlath has been at the helm since Polestar’s inception in 2017. He oversaw the release of Polestar’s first two models: the $150,000 hybrid Polestar 1 sports coupe and the more mainstream $60,000 Polestar 2 fastback sedan. The Polestar 3, which is an SUV, was released this year and is the company’s first model to be produced in the US.
But Tesla’s price cuts, increasing competition from European automakers, and recurring headaches around charging have led to a softening in EV demand. Polestar said it lost $231 million in the first quarter of 2024, up from $219 million over the same period the previous year.
Polestar’s ties to China — like Volvo, it is owned by Chinese automaker Geely — are also looking increasingly fraught, as the US, EU, and Canada consider new tariffs on EVs imported from the country. Geely is now the company’s main financial backer, and Polestar’s factory is located in Chengdu, China.
“I am very proud of what we’ve achieved together in the last seven years,” Ingenlath said in a statement. “We had the vision of an electric premium brand which puts performance and design at its core. And we made it, the dream became reality.”
Prior to joining Polestar, Ingenlath’s experience was mostly in design. He served as chief exterior designer for Volkswagen before being appointed chief designer at Škoda in 2000. In 2006, he was promoted to director of design at the Volkswagen Design Center in Potsdam.

In an interview on the Decoder podcast earlier this year, Ingenlath spoke about his experience as a designer and how that informed his work as CEO.
“To a certain degree, you have to take that risk of projecting what is going to happen in the future,” he said. “Where is consumer taste going? I had to learn as a designer to be very much on my own — with whatever data you try to prove it with.”
Lohscheller’s appointment marks a shift in focus for Polestar — perhaps away from the minimalist designs that marked Ingenlath’s tenure. In addition to Opel, he has also served as chief executive of VinFast, the buzzy Vietnamese EV company, and Nikola, which is producing hydrogen-powered semi trucks.
“Polestar has experienced an exceptional start-up phase and with a broader model line-up, Michael Lohscheller is the ideal leader to guide Polestar into its next chapter,” Winfried Vahland, Polestar’s incoming chairman, said in a statement. Vahland, who was appointed to Polestar’s board in June, comes to Polestar after serving as chair and CEO of Škoda.

A million airport parking customers affected in huge data breach

Park’N Fly suffers a data breach, loses sensitive customer data such as CAA numbers and postal addresses.

A million Park’N Fly customers have had their sensitive data stolen after the company suffered a cyberattack.

The news was confirmed in a data breach notification letter sent out by the company, which noted the threat actors accessed the company’s IT infrastructure in July 2024 using stolen VPN credentials.

The crooks stole people’s full names, email addresses, postal addresses, Aeroplan numbers, and CAA numbers. No payment data was taken, the company confirmed.

Passwords are safe

“Park’N Fly discovered that an unauthorized third party accessed our network through remote VPN access,” the letter stated. “Based on our investigation, we determined that the unauthorized activity occurred between July 11 and July 13, 2024. On August 1, 2024, we determined that some of your personal information was likely affected by the incident.”

Park’n Fly offers airport parking services, providing travelers with convenient, secure parking options near major airports across 70 locations across the world. Its biggest operations, however, are in Canada and the United States. The firm also offers additional services like car washing and valet parking to enhance the travel experience for its customers.

A company spokesperson said approximately one million customer files were accessed, but passwords were not taken.

It took Park’n Fly five days to restore its systems, and now it’s working on adding further security measures to make sure such incidents don’t occur again.

“While we deeply regret any concern this incident may have caused, we want to reassure our valued customers and partners that we are taking all necessary steps to safeguard their information,” stated Park’N Fly’s CEO, Carlo Marrello.

“We remain committed to transparency and will continue to prioritize the integrity of our systems as we navigate this situation.”
