Astro Bot’s new PS5 controller has a pair of adorable eyes

Image: Sony

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Team Asobi — the developers behind the forthcoming Astro Bot — have teamed up to design and release a limited edition Astro Bot DualSense controller.
Just look at it. I need it.

The Astro Bot limited edition controller adds blue controller grips and sci-fi accents and features Astro’s signature pair of bright blue eyes on the touchpad that, based on the adorable trailer, appear to blink at you. (They better blink at you — what’s the point of the eyes if they don’t blink at you?)
Team Asobi has added a bunch of new interactions between DualSense controllers and the Astro Bot game, some of which I got to experience during my demo of the game at Summer Game Fest. The team has increased the number of textures you can feel through the controller like sand, glass, or metal. All of Astro’s new power-ups will have a distinct feel to them thanks to haptic feedback and the adaptive triggers. In the demo, there are little spark plugs you frequently have to pull out of the ground. The sound effects coming out of the controller combined with the slowly increasing resistance on the triggers made it actually feel like yanking on stubborn wires.
The controller will be available for preorder on August 9th in select countries, retailing for $79.99. Or you can try your luck buying it from select retailers worldwide on September 6th — the same day as Astro Bot’s launch.

While Marvel Rivals on the face of it is just two teams battling it out to see who comes out on top, there are some pretty complex mechanics too.

One particular part of the game that most are a little confused by is SVP since there are no real explainers as to what this is.

If you’ve seen SVP pop up on the scoreboard after finishing a match in Marvel Rivals and want to know what it stands for, read on for this, and why it is actually quite important.

Marvel Rivals SVP: What does it mean?

When you complete a match, like other games of this ilk, there is one player who is branded the MVP (Most Valuable Player).

This is the best player in the whole match and can be awarded for their fantastic healing, insane DPS, kill count, and more.

However, Marvel Rivals also tags someone as the SVP – something you don’t see often in other titles, or ever for that matter.

SVP is short for Second Valuable Player, basically meaning the player with that tag is the runner up in the game, just missing out on the top spot.

Technically, it should be Second Most Valuable Player but we’ll let that slide to have the three letter abbreviation.

While it’s nice to receive some recognition for performing well in the game, it also has a more important meaning if you were to get it in Competitive.

This is because if you’re awarded with SVP and are on the losing team, you won’t lose any Rank Points, great for those who unfortunately get stuck with lackluster teammates.

Therefore, it fosters a need to do well even if you know you’re not going to win a match, which could even influence a late comeback if the stars align.

Apple Intelligence features reportedly won’t be ready for iOS 18’s launch this fall

Betas of iOS 18.1 et al with Apple Intelligence could land as soon as this week.

Enlarge (credit: Apple)

Apple spent a lot of time at its Worldwide Developers Conference this year talking up the new iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 features powered by Apple Intelligence, the brand name Apple is using for various generative AI features. But beta testers still haven’t been able to use any of these features for themselves, even though Apple has released four developer beta builds and two public beta builds of all of these updates at this point.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple still plans to release a preview of these features this summer, but the Apple Intelligence features will actually be “later than anticipated.” Apple Intelligence reportedly won’t be ready when the initial versions of these operating systems launch in the fall—usually mid-to-late September—and Apple currently plans to launch them to the general public in an update in October, the report says.

Gurman says that Apple will still have a preview of the Apple Intelligence features available for beta testers this summer as promised. But they’ll be available in beta versions of iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 updates that will be released and tested separately from the 18.0 updates that are currently available in Apple’s developer and public beta programs. (Gurman doesn’t specifically mention macOS 15 Sequoia, but hopefully a 15.1 update with the Apple Intelligence features will be available for Macs, too.)

Some Windows 11 users were convinced a change to File Explorer was a bug – but Microsoft has confirmed it isn’t

A recent Windows 11 update introduced a black border around selected files, sparking user discussion over design choices.

Microsoft’s most recent Windows 11 update introduced a number of changes, and one that’s caught some users by surprise is the addition of a noticeable black border around currently selected files and folders in File Explorer.

The change was highlighted by Windows Latest, who pointed out that it appears in File Explorer’s light mode, and it was so jarring to some users that they reported it to Microsoft as a bug in the cumulative update for July 2024 (KB5040442).

Windows Latest reached out to Microsoft to check if this was a glitch, or if it was a deliberate move, and the company has responded to clarify that it isn’t a bug, but an intentional change to improve user accessibility. In other words, the idea is to make it easier and clearer to see whatever is currently selected in File Explorer.

For those who aren’t so keen on this tweak to the interface, Microsoft did follow up to say that Windows 11 users can always submit feedback on the matter via the Feedback Hub.

A choice is good, as always…

Personally, I agree that this design change looks a little odd compared to the rest of Windows 11’s user interface. Before, selected files and folders were accented with a blue border, which many people (myself included) preferred. Making it black does increase the contrast and make your selection in File Explorer more noticeable, and that might well be useful on the accessibility front – but surely it’d make sense to have this as an optional change. Then, if you do find it jarring, you can turn it off, but if the black highlighting benefits you, then all well and good.

Maybe further down the line we’ll see Microsoft introduce a toggle to adjust the option in the Settings app. Perhaps we could even get a toggle to turn off some of the adverts that are increasingly appearing in Windows 11, too (not likely).

Note that the cumulative update for July comes laden with some significant issues, including an unexpected BitLocker recovery screen appearing and worrying Windows 11 users.
