Castle Crashers, the side-scrolling multiplayer beat-em-up that launched in 2008, is getting premium DLC. This is significant because, in addition to launching in 2008, it hasn’t gotten a DLC update since 2012, but it obviously still has enough of an audience to rate an update worthy of a live-service game.

As explained by developer The Behemoth over the weekend, the DLC will let players customize skins for their characters, play with a new character, and enjoy new weapon artwork.

The trailer is somewhat lore-specific, so try to follow along. But the idea is “Painter Boss, Jr.” is a new playable character, as well as the spokesperson for the new DLC. Bottom line, fans can go back in, draw up new characters, and see them fully animated within minutes, no extra work needed.

This of course means players can go zany with who they make, but The Behemoth is careful to ask folks to keep things within Steam community guidelines — aka, please don’t rip off other people’s IP. These creations are still shareable, so … anything goes, somewhat like create-a-wrestler in the WWE 2K series. But unofficially, you can still customize to your heart’s content.

What else is The Behemoth updating?

BattleBlock Theater, also developed by The Behemoth (and launched in 2013) is getting what’s billed as a big quality-of-life update. That doesn’t mean new features or expansions per se, but the studio promises better frame rates, resolution, support for more controller types, and the obligatory bug fixes and enhancements (PC version).

In all it’s just a sign that people who have made very good games, even if that was more than a decade ago, are still around to support it. And fans who remember them should consider coming back. There is no release date yet for this DLC or Battleblock’s update, unfortunately, but it looks like a lot of fun.

Google might make it easier to hide photos with specific faces on Android

Files found in the app’s latest update show that Google Photos will take a few steps out of its facing hiding process.

Recently found evidence suggests Google Photos may receive a new tool to make hiding photographs displaying certain faces easier. Android Authority unearthed details of this update after digging through the latest patch of Google Photos on Android.

As the publication explains, the current method has you select a person’s face within the People section then tap the three-dot menu. This process will be further streamlined in the upcoming patch as faces will already be highlighted. All you have to do is open an image and then bring up the aforementioned People section. Like before, tap the three dots next to the icon where you will select “Hide face from memories.”

There, you’ll have two options. You can either block the other person entirely on your account or have them appear less often in the Memories archive. Additionally, users are being given new choices within the three-dot menu. You can also edit the image label and alter it to a different one or change the cover image on a photograph.

These are small changes, yes, but Android Authority argues they simplify the process a lot. You won’t have to hop between images just to hide a single person on multiple photos, nor will users have to go through the app’s Settings menu to hide files in bulk. It can all be done conveniently through the People section.

Imminent release

Because the tool was discovered within the files and not on the app itself, it’s not available to anyone now. However, the publication successfully activated the revamped process on their smartphone, so an imminent release could be just around the corner. Screenshots show off a feature that looks finished, although we wouldn’t be surprised if there’s more to be done.

The publication believes the patch could roll out within the next “weeks or months at the most.” As with every leak, take this information with a grain of salt.

Instagram starts letting people create AI versions of themselves

Meta is opening up the ability for anyone in the US to create AI versions of themselves in Instagram or on the web, with a new tool called AI Studio.
The pitch is that creators and business owners will use these AI profiles to talk to their followers on their behalf. They’ll be able to talk directly with humans in chat threads and respond to comments on their author’s account. Meta says Instagram users in the US can get started with AI Studio via either its website or by starting a new “AI chat” directly in Instagram.
In a blog post on Monday, the company writes that “creators can customize their AI based on things like their Instagram content, topics to avoid and links they want it to share.” The post goes on to say that creators will be able to toggle things like auto-replies from their AI and dictate which specific accounts it’s allowed to interact with.

AI Studio also allows for the creation of totally new AI characters that can be deployed across Meta’s apps. Here, Meta is coming after startups like Character.AI and Replika, where people already talk to — and even fall in love with — themed chatbots. Like OpenAI’s custom GPT store, Meta will also surface the AI characters people make for others to try.
Meta’s first pass at this concept was having a handful of celebrities create AI versions of themselves with the same likeness but different names and personas. At the time, Meta said it took that approach because it worried about AI versions of celebrities saying problematic things on behalf of their human counterparts. (Even with the controls built into AI Studio, this is still bound to happen. It’s generative AI we’re dealing with, after all.)

Connections is the latest New York Times word game that’s captured the public’s attention. The game is all about finding the “common threads between words.” And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier—so we’ve served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

What is Connections?

The NYT‘s latest daily word game has become a social media hit. The Times credits associate puzzle editor Wyna Liu with helping to create the new word game and bringing it to the publications’ Games section. Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise of anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there’s only one correct answer. If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake—players get up to four mistakes until the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Mike McQuaid on 15 Years of Homebrew and Protecting Open-Source Maintainers

Despite multiple methods available across major operating systems for installing and updating applications, there remains “no real clear answer to ‘which is best,'” reports The Next Web. Each system faces unique challenges such as outdated packages, high fees, and policy restrictions.

Enter Homebrew.

“Initially created as an option for developers to keep the dependencies they often need for developing, testing, and running their work, Homebrew has grown to be so much more in its 15-year history.” Created in 2009, Homebrew has become a leading solution for macOS, integrating with MDM tools through its enterprise-focused extension, Workbrew, to balance user freedom with corporate security needs, while maintaining its open-source roots under the guidance of Mike McQuaid. In an interview with The Next Web’s Chris Chinchilla, project leader Mike McQuaid talks about the challenges and responsibilities of maintaining one of the world’s largest open-source projects: As with anything that attracts plenty of use and attention, Homebrew also attracts a lot of mixed and extreme opinions, and processing and filtering those requires a tough outlook, something that Mike has spoken about in numerous interviews and at conferences. “As a large project, you get a lot of hate from people. Either people are just frustrated because they hit a bug or because you changed something, and they didn’t read the release notes, and now something’s broken,” Mike says when I ask him about how he copes with the constant influx of communication. “There are a lot of entitled, noisy users in open source who contribute very little and like to shout at people and make them feel bad. One of my strengths is that I have very little time for those people, and I just insta-block them or close their issues.”

More crucially, an open-source project is often managed and maintained by a group of people. Homebrew has several dozen maintainers and nearly one thousand total contributors. Mike explains that all of these people also deserve to be treated with respect by users, “I’m also super protective of my maintainers, and I don’t want them to be treated that way either.” But despite these features and its widespread use, one area Homebrew has always lacked is the ability to work well with teams of users. This is where Workbrew, a company Mike founded with two other Homebrew maintainers, steps in. […] Workbrew ties together various Homebrew features with custom glue to create a workflow for setting up and maintaining Mac machines. It adds new features that core Homebrew maintainers had no interest in adding, such as admin and reporting dashboards for a computing fleet, while bringing more general improvements to the core project.

Bearing in mind Mike’s motivation to keep Homebrew in the “traditional open source” model, I asked him how he intended to keep the needs of the project and the business separated and satisfied. “We’ve seen a lot of churn in the last few years from companies that made licensing decisions five or ten years ago, which have now changed quite dramatically and have generated quite a lot of community backlash,” Mike said. “I’m very sensitive to that, and I am a little bit of an open-source purist in that I still consider the open-source initiative’s definition of open source to be what open source means. If you don’t comply with that, then you can be another thing, but I think you’re probably not open source.”

And regarding keeping his and his co-founder’s dual roles separated, Mike states, “I’m the CTO and co-founder of Workbrew, and I’m the project leader of Homebrew. The project leader with Homebrew is an elected position.” Every year, the maintainers and the community elect a candidate. “But then, with the Homebrew maintainers working with us on Workbrew, one of the things I say is that when we’re working on Workbrew, I’m your boss now, but when we work on Homebrew, I’m not your boss,” Mike adds. “If you think I’m saying something and it’s a bad idea, you tell me it’s a bad idea, right?” The company is keeping its early progress in a private beta for now, but you can expect an announcement soon.
