Russia To Allow Crypto Payments in International Trade To Counter Sanctions
Russian lawmakers passed a bill on Tuesday that will allow businesses to use crypto currencies in international trade, as part of efforts to skirt Western sanctions imposed after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. From a report: The law is expected to go into force in September, and Russian central bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina, one of the backers of the new law, said the first transactions in cryptocurrencies will take place before the end of the year. Russia has faced significant delays in international payments with major trading partners such as China, India and the United Arab Emirates after banks in those countries, under pressure from Western regulators, became more cautious.
“We are taking a historic decision in the financial sphere,” the head of the Duma lower house of parliament, Anatoly Aksakov, told lawmakers. Under the new law, the central bank will create a new “experimental” infrastructure for cryptocurrency payments. Details of the infrastructure have yet to be announced.

Apple is reportedly taking a bold step with its new ultra-slim model ahead of the release of its iPhone 16 lineup. Slated for 2025, rumors about the iPhone 17 have already begun circulating, suggesting that the model could have its biggest design upgrade yet.
What will the iPhone 17 design look like?
According to The Information, the iPhone 17 Slim will be the first major redesign of the phone since 2017. With the new model, the tech giant is said to be focusing primarily on aesthetics, unlike the Pro version, which boasts more advanced camera quality and processing power. TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that the larger iPhone Plus may eventually be phased out in favor of the new slim edition.
The analyst states that the currently known specifications of the phone include a screen size of around 6.6 inches and a screen resolution of 2,740 by 1,260 pixels. The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will have display sizes of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively, so the iPhone 17 will be somewhere in between. It may be a larger handset overall.

Apple supply chain analyst Jeff Pu, however, believes the device will have a 6.5-inch screen.
Research from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found that four iPhone 15 models accounted for 67 percent of total iPhone sales in the quarter, compared to 79 percent for the four iPhone 14 models in the same quarter a year ago. The premium Pro options have apparently been outshining the sales of the iPhone 15 models.

What features will the iPhone 17 have?
ProMotion display
Every iPhone 17 model released in 2025 is expected to be upgraded with ProMotion display technology, which includes a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz for smoother scrolling and video content.
Using low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) panels for all iPhone 17 models enables ProMotion. Always-on technology will allow for the always-on display of time, widgets, and notifications that have been available on the Pro models.
The iPhone 17 lineup could also feature an anti-reflective display that is more scratch-resistant than the Ceramic Shield used in current iPhone models.
Camera
There has been speculation that it will feature a narrower Dynamic Island and a centered camera, while another rumor suggests it will include a single-lens rear camera and a standard Dynamic Island. Other possible features mentioned include an A19 chip and an improved front camera.
MacRumors writes that Apple may be working on an upgraded 24-megapixel front-facing camera with a six-element lens. The iPhone 17 Pro Max could include an updated 48-megapixel telephoto camera, which would be an improvement over the current 12-megapixel sensor.
Metal frame
Ming-Chi Kuo also suggests that the model will have a titanium-aluminum alloy metal frame with a lower percentage of titanium than the current Pro and Pro Max metal frames. Other iPhone 17 models may end up using aluminum frames.
5G chip
The phone is also expected to be fitted with a 5G chip, which Apple has reportedly been working on since 2018. Current iPhones generally come with Qualcomm modems for cellular connectivity. However, in 2024, Apple extended its 5G modem supply agreement with Qualcomm for iPhone launches through 2026.
The higher-end Pro models may feature Wi-Fi 7 and 12GB of RAM, while the less expensive models could include Wi-Fi 6E and 8GB of RAM.
USB-C charging
Other major features include a universal USB-C port, which Apple had to adopt in 2023. The European Union now requires all phones, tablets, and cameras to use USB-C for charging before the end of 2024, in a bid to reduce e-waste. The USB-C charging standard is said to be faster at transferring data than its predecessor.
What will the price of the iPhone 17 be?
There have been conflicting reports about how much the smartphone could cost. Some sources report that it will be priced similarly to a Plus model at around $899, while others suggest it will cost more than an iPhone 17 Pro Max, which can reach up to $1,299. The Information believes it will be a new high-end device starting at $1,199.
That being said, Ming-Chi Kuo disagrees, stating that the device will not replace the Plus and that it will not be higher-end or more expensive than the Pro models. Therefore, we will need to wait for more details.
When will the iPhone 17 be released?
There are four different versions of the iPhone 17 expected in 2025. These include the standard iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and the new iPhone 17 Slim. As mentioned, there will no longer be a “Plus” version, as Apple attempts to phase it out.
The company is expected to announce the lineup in September 2025, so some of these reported features could change.

Beware, travel apps are hungry for your data – here’s how to protect your privacy
Researchers at VPN provider NordVPN found that travel applications request some of the most data unrelated to their functionalities. And, this is bad for your privacy.
As you’re getting ready to hit the beach or travel to the Paris Olympics, beware: travel applications are among the most data-hungry and privacy-unfriendly apps.
Cybersecurity experts at NordVPN, one of the best VPN providers on the market, have found the likes of Booking, Airbnb, and FlightRadar24 request some of the most unnecessary permissions to access your device functions. Put simply, they want to access your data even when it’s unrelated to fulfilling their performance, including some of the most sensitive information like your biometrics details.
All this is bad for your privacy, especially when considering the ever-growing threat of data breaches involving big companies. Booking.com, for instance, was the target of a major phishing campaign last year. While it may be unimaginable to plan your holiday without one of these apps, there are still some actions you can take to protect your privacy when using them.
Travel apps: “Over 28% of permissions are excessive”
“Travel apps are among the most eager to request access to devices’ functions that are not needed for their performance. Collected data could be used against the user’s interests and lead to privacy issues that are way more serious than targeted ads,” said Adrianus Warmenhoven, cybersecurity advisor at NordVPN.
According to researchers, every travel app asks for an average of 23 device permissions, including access to your travel location, photos, or videos. More than six of these permissions are unnecessary, though, as the application doesn’t need such details for its functionality.
The travel category was also found to be particularly eager to access your biometrics details. This is a highly sensitive piece of information as it deals with system-critical processes – think of device unblocking, multi-factor authentication, or online payments. On average, travel apps request nine special, dangerous, and biometric permissions.
Besides travel apps, social networking, health and lifestyle, and navigation applications are some of the most unfriendly apps for data access and unnecessary permission requests. You can read the full findings of NordVPN’s research here.
How to stay safe when using travel apps
Let’s face it, in today’s digitalized world it would be foolish to think that we can avoid using some travel apps when we plan or go on holiday. Yet, we can still do so while protecting our privacy.
A virtual private network (VPN) is also a very handy tool when traveling. Besides protecting your data and devices when connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi, a travel VPN also allows you to keep streaming all your favorite shows while traveling abroad.
As a rule of thumb, Warmenhoven recommends downloading travel apps (and any other application, for that matter) only from official stores or websites. This is because, he explains, unofficial app stores won’t always have systems to check whether an app is safe before it’s published and available to download. Criminals are also infamous for using insecure applications to spread malware attacks.
According to Warmenhoven, you should also take some time to familiarise yourself with the app’s privacy policy before downloading it. He especially recommends checking what information the provider will record about you and share with third parties.
As we have seen, reviewing your app’s data permissions is also crucial. “Users should always consider whether the app needs certain data to do its job before tapping ‘Accept,’ even if the app is developed by a well-known and trustworthy traveling service provider,” said Warmenhoven, suggesting particular attention to permissions like camera, microphone, storage, location, and contact list.
You should avoid automatically signing in with social network accounts, too. If you do so, the app will be able to collect information from the account and vice versa.
Lastly, remember to delete apps you don’t use. Why risk your privacy for an application you’re not even using?
Charter failed to notify 911 call centers and FCC about VoIP phone outages

Charter Communications agreed to pay a $15 million fine after admitting that it failed to notify more than a thousand 911 call centers about an outage caused by a denial-of-service attack and separately failed to meet the Federal Communications Commission’s reporting deadlines for hundreds of planned maintenance outages.
“As part of the settlement, Charter admits to violating the agency’s rules regarding notifications to public safety officials and the Commission in connection with three unplanned network outages and hundreds of planned, maintenance-related network outages that occurred last year,” the FCC said in an announcement yesterday.
A consent decree said Charter admits that it “failed to timely notify more than 1,000 PSAPs [Public Safety Answering Points] of an outage on February 19, 2023.” The decree notes that failure to notify the PSAPs, or 911 call centers, “impedes the ability of public safety officials to mediate the effects of an outage by notifying the public of alternate ways to contact emergency services.”

Amazon failed to adequately alert more than 300,000 customers to serious risks—including death and electrocution—that US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) testing found with more than 400,000 products that third parties sold on its platform.
The CPSC unanimously voted to hold Amazon legally responsible for third-party sellers’ defective products. Now, Amazon must make a CPSC-approved plan to properly recall the dangerous products—including highly flammable children’s pajamas, faulty carbon monoxide detectors, and unsafe hair dryers that could cause electrocution—which the CPSC fears may still be widely used in homes across America.
