Sonos rolls out fix for iOS battery drain issue

Image: Sonos

The hits just keep coming. As Sonos works to get its app back to a better place, it managed to introduce a pretty nasty iOS battery drain problem with last week’s update. Customers were quick to notice and were none too happy with the company for yet another foul-up. Some reported battery usage of well over 50 percent, with the Sonos app running in the background for hours and hours and gradually draining their phone’s charge.
Today’s update to the Sonos app should resolve the battery issue, according to the release notes. The company has committed to rolling out improvements to the software on a biweekly cadence, but according to Sonos community manager Keith Nieves, the team wanted to get this fix out ASAP.
Some customers have embraced third-party apps like SonoPhone while the official app continues through this rough patch. In last week’s letter from CEO Patrick Spence, Sonos laid out planned improvements that it plans to deliver through October. Those include things like improving volume consistency, alarm reliability, and restoring the ability to edit playlists and the upcoming queue from within the Sonos app.

A notorious ransomware group has received the largest ransom payment ever

Ransomware attacks are becoming more common, and more lucrative, report finds.

An unnamed Fortune 50 company has reportedly paid the Dark Angels ransomware gang an eye-watering $75 million to reclaim control of its systems.

The report by Zscaler ThreatLabz noted the payment marks the highest known ransom ever paid, considerably surpassing the previous record of $40 million held by insurance giant CNA after a ransomware attack by Evil Corp.

The emerging widespread threat of ransomware attacks combined with a new record-breaking payment has sparked serious concern among cybersecurity specialists, who only see the threat as getting worse.

$75 million ransom payment breaks all records

While Zscaler did not disclose the identity of the Fortune 50 company, they mentioned the incident occurred in early 2024. Speculation points to pharmaceutical giant Cencora, ranked number 10 in the Fortune 50 list, which experienced an attack in February 2024. No ransomware gang is known to have claimed responsibility for the attack, suggesting a ransom payment might have been made.

The report also illustrates the increasing threat from ransomware gangs – the company identified 19 new ransomware families, blocked 17.8% more attacks than the year before, and saw 57.8% more extorted companies on data leak sites.

Zscaler revealed the US accounts for virtually half (49.95%) of all attacks, with countries like the UK, Germany, Canada and France also at a higher-than-average risk, with critical infrastructure and sectors like manufacturing, healthcare and technology seeing the most attacks.

The ransomware group responsible for the record-breaking $75 million payment, has been operating since around May 2022. In September 2023, the gang, known as Dark Angels, unsuccessfully demanded a $51 million ransom.

TechRadar Pro has asked Cencora to confirm whether it paid a ransom for its February 2024 attack, but we did not receive an immediate response.

The post Gala Technical Analysis and Price Prediction – Will GALA Surge 40x in 2024? appeared first on ReadWrite.

The GALA token had a strong bounce back last Monday after a big drop, making it a top altcoin to buy. The question is, what caused this recovery?

In this article, we’ll examine Gala Games from both fundamental and technical perspectives, outlining potential price targets for the next 6-12 months and discussing strategic buying opportunities.

In addition to this Play-to-Earn crypto, we’ll also explore an emerging crypto with a Learn-to-Earn model called 99Bitcoins and its potential for explosive growth at launch.

Gala Games’ recent bullish news fuels GALA token surge

The recent bounce back of the GALA token matches Gala Games’ news about raising the Gala Gold membership fee to $100 and upgrading GalaChain’s security.

Raising the Gala Gold membership cost helps keep the VIP community exclusive and shows Gala’s plan to reward its most dedicated members.

Gala Gold membership fee increase to $100

Gala Games, known for its games, music, and film projects, has announced that the Gala Gold membership fee will rise from $50 to $100. Originally priced at $10, this VIP club offers lifetime access to exclusive benefits. Raising the membership cost aims to keep the community exclusive and high-quality.

Gala Gold sets apart the most dedicated members from casual users. Membership provides access to special Discord channels for announcements, sneak peeks, discussions, and events.

Members also get direct interactions with company leaders and early access to information, often before it becomes public. The club creates a close-knit community that helps shape and improve Gala’s offerings.

Additionally, VIP members occasionally receive free NFTs, which can include in-game items and unique digital assets. These NFTs are given based on a snapshot of current members, so only those who paid by the snapshot date receive these exclusive items.

GalaSwap API upgrade

Besides raising the Gala Gold membership fee, GalaChain will upgrade the GalaSwap API starting August 1, 2024. This upgrade will make the signature process for API operations more consistent by accepting only one specific signature for each operation.

Users must update their signing code to match the new signature format, or they will encounter errors like “S value is too high.” This security upgrade follows a security breach two months ago, where $23 million worth of GALA tokens were minted and sold without authorization.

However, this update is not in response to current vulnerabilities but aims to strengthen GalaChain’s security. Users should review the updated GalaSwap API documentation and adjust their systems to meet the new requirements.

The support team is available to help with this transition and ensure a smooth update process. As Gala Games and GalaChain evolve, attention is on the GALA token, which is rebounding. The 24-hour trading volume has surged by 27.61% to $61.99M, indicating growing interest in the token as it recovers from a recent decline.

GALA price prediction

Gala Games is a play-to-earn platform where players earn cryptocurrency through gameplay. The platform shows promise, currently having a market cap of around $785 million and a price of $0.02. In the past, Gala reached a peak price of $0.83 with a market cap of about $5 billion.

However, with an increase in circulating supply, reaching the previous all-time high might be challenging. A more realistic target would be a market cap of $3.5 to $4 billion, potentially pushing the price to $0.08 to $0.10.

Analyzing the charts, Gala appears relatively stable. The weekly timeframe suggests a bullish market structure. The 0.5 Fibonacci retracement level, around $0.03, is a crucial indicator; breaking this level could signal a significant upward trend.

For potential buying opportunities, the current price level seems undervalued, making it an attractive entry point for long-term investors. Potential price targets include a return to the previous high at $0.08 (a 4.2x return), a mid-term target around $0.18 (a 9.2x return), and a more ambitious long-term target of $0.39 (a 19.4x return).

With only five days remaining, the presale price of $0.00116 won’t last long. The presale ends on August 6th at 2pm UTC, and after that, this early-adopter advantage will be gone. So far, the presale has been successful, raising over $2.5 million and showing strong community support.

Many investors are excited about the potential of the Learn-to-Earn model, and there’s a lot of buzz around it. After the presale, the team plans to launch on a decentralized exchange (DEX) and hopes to list on centralized exchanges (CEX) later in the year. You can explore the potential future of 99Bitcoins through our 99Bitcoins price prediction.

In addition to the presale, the 99Bitcoins Token team is running a huge airdrop campaign, giving away $99,999 worth of Bitcoin to 99 lucky members of the community. This is a great chance to win big just for joining early.

The team also plans to switch to the BRC-20 standard on Bitcoin, which could open up new opportunities and tap into the growing Bitcoin-based ecosystem. This forward-thinking move highlights the project’s commitment to crypto education.

99Bitcoins Learn-to-Earn and staking features

99Bitcoins isn’t new to the crypto world. Since starting in 2013, the platform has offered 79 hours of crypto courses to over 2.8 million subscribers and has more than 709,000 social media followers.

The platform will power a “Learn-to-Earn” system that aims to change how people learn about crypto. In this system, users can earn $99BTC rewards by learning about blockchain, DeFi, and NFTs.

Think of it as getting paid to study—except instead of boring textbooks, you engage with modules, quizzes, and more. Earning $99BTC comes with benefits like VIP group access, trading signals, mentoring, and exclusive courses.

There’s also a staking option for those looking for passive income. By staking $99BTC, investors can earn about 671% annually. This yield will decrease as more tokens are staked, but it remains a strong opportunity for many.

Overall, the combination of Learn-to-Earn and staking lets you both gain crypto knowledge and earn rewards. To participate in the $99BTC token presale, visit 99Bitcoins.com.

Uber deal could add 100,000 ride-hailing EVs to roads

Image: Uber

Uber is teaming up with BYD to bring 100,000 of the Chinese automaker’s electric vehicles to the ride-sharing app. The multi-year partnership will roll out in Europe and Latin America first, giving drivers “best-in-class pricing and financing” for BYD vehicles used with Uber.
Uber says the goal is to encourage more drivers to use EVs as part of its plan to electrify its rides, while also lowering the cost of EV ownership. Along with potential discounts on financing and loans, the partnership could give BYD drivers price cuts on charging and vehicle maintenance, depending on the market.
Both companies plan to bring the partnership to the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in the future. Uber announced a similar partnership in 2022 that let drivers rent EVs from Hertz. But Hertz ended up scaling back the program after finding higher rates of vehicle damage among Uber drivers.

.@Uber has the most widely available on-demand EV network in the world. @BYDGlobal is a global leader in EV production. Together, we’re making it easier for @Uber drivers in Europe, Latin America and Asia to make the switch and go green ⚡️https://t.co/6AqMgl2heU— dara khosrowshahi (@dkhos) July 31, 2024

Additionally, Uber and BYD will work together to bring more autonomous vehicles to the ride-sharing platform. Uber began offering rides with the robotaxi company Waymo last year and expanded its partnership to include autonomous food delivery in April. “This collaboration marks a new era in the electrification of urban mobility, and we look forward to seeing our cutting-edge EVs become a common sight on the streets of cities worldwide,” Stella Li, the CEO of BYD Americas, says in the announcement.
It’s not clear how Uber’s partnership with BYD will pan out, especially as countries around the globe restrict sales of EVs made in China. The Chinese government provides billions in subsidies to EV automakers in the country, allowing them to sell EVs cheaper than rivals and potentially harming foreign competition. The US raised the tariffs on EVs from China in May, and the European Union followed suit with an extra 17.4 percent tariff on BYD imports in July.

Ford facelifts its Maverick pickup, adds all-wheel-drive hybrid option

The AWD hybrid is Ford’s response to overwhelming customer requests.

Ford is giving its Maverick pickup truck a midlife refresh for model year 2025. And while the changes aren’t earth-shattering, they will probably pique your interest. The headline news for Ars readers is probably this: the hybrid is back, and now you can spec an all-wheel drive hybrid Maverick as well as a front-wheel-drive electrified model.

When we tested the Maverick back in 2021, we were very impressed with it, particularly the front-wheel drive hybrid powertrain. The 191 hp (142 kW) pickup was capable of exceeding 42 mpg (5.6 L/100 km). It was the right size, as opposed to being gargantuan like almost every other pickup on sale, yet it still had the ability to carry 1,500 lbs (680 kg) in the bed or tow 2,000 lb (907 kg) trailers. All for a starting price of just under $20,000, assuming you ignored the destination charge.

Even better, the 2.5 L hybrid powertrain was the standard option, with the more powerful 2.0 L EcoBoost hybrid as a cost-option, either with front- or all-wheel drive. Sadly, more recent supply chain issues got in the way of that, with Ford dropping the hybrid as standard for MY24.

Twelve South’s AirFly Duo Bluetooth dongle drops to a record low of $30

There are many devices out there that no-one really needs, but have a specific purpose that can help to improve one’s quality of life a bit. Twelve South’s AirFly Duo is one such product. It’s a dongle that lets you connect Bluetooth earbuds and headphones to in-flight entertainment systems. The device is currently on sale for $30, which is a record low. The AirFly Duo usually costs $45.
This is one of our favorite pieces of travel gear. It plugs into any 3.5mm audio jack, actually, so you can use it with the likes of gym equipment, gaming systems or even TVs. Musicians can use it to listen to audio from amplifiers too. What’s more, you can connect two sets of earbuds or headphones at once, so two people can watch a movie on the same iPad while traveling.

Twelve South says the device uses aptX Low Latency Codecs to minimize audio lag. The AirFly Duo is said to have a battery life of over 22 hours, so it should last for even the lengthiest of long-haul flights. But, if you need to, you can charge the device while it’s in use.
Again, the AirFly isn’t a product that anyone truly needs — you can buy a set of wired earbuds that’ll work in a pinch for a few bucks. But you’ll be able to use any Bluetooth earbuds or headphones of your choice with this device. Best of all, you’ll avoid the awkwardness of a trailing wire draping over (and perhaps into) your in-flight meal.
