Life is Strange spiritual successor delayed to avoid Life is Strange sequel

Lost Records: Bloom & Rage is a brand-new game from the creators of Life is Strange. It’s been described as a spiritual successor to that series and was previously scheduled to arrive in late 2024. However, publisher Don’t Nod has opted to delay Lost Records: Bloom & Rage and release it in early 2025 instead.
In fact, the delay is in large part due to a new Life is Strange game from another studio. Life is Strange: Double Exposure marks the return of the original game’s protagonist Max Caulfield. The sequel, from Square Enix and developer Deck Nine Games, is set to hit PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in October, with a Switch release planned for later.

Don’t Nod says it wanted to give Lost Records: Bloom & Rage some breathing space to succeed following “an in-depth assessment of recent trends and developments in the industry.” But a quote from CEO Oskar Guilbert makes the reasoning more explicit. “We know that many of our fans are eagerly awaiting this game, just as they are the recently announced next installment of Life is Strange,” Guilbert said in a statement. “Let’s give both titles the space they need to be enjoyed by our players within the large community we have built.”
While this update might be disappointing for those who were looking forward to Lost Records, it’s a smart call. It gives fans plenty of time to experience both games without too much overlap.
In the meantime, Don’t Nod reckons that Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden, a surprisingly emotional action RPG from earlier this year that I enjoyed quite a bit, will boost its bottom line, especially in the long term. It also released the thoughtful climbing puzzle game Jusant late last year. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/life-is-strange-spiritual-successor-delayed-to-avoid-life-is-strange-sequel-124553471.html?src=rss

Microsoft reveals further emails compromised by Russian hack

An attack on Microsoft by Russian hackers had further implications than initially reported. The tech giant is notifying additional individuals that emails between them and Microsoft were accessed, Bloomberg reports. A group known as Midnight Blizzard or Nobelium orchestrated this attack, along with the 2020 SolarWinds hack. The US government has previously linked Midnight Blizzard to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service.
Microsoft previously informed some individuals that their emails were viewed, but the company is now sharing specifics. “This week we are continuing notifications to customers who corresponded with Microsoft corporate email accounts that were exfiltrated by the Midnight Blizzard threat actor, and we are providing the customers the email correspondence that was accessed by this actor,” a Microsoft spokesperson stated. “This is increased detail for customers who have already been notified and also includes new notifications.” Microsoft is making customers aware via email, which initially led to concerns that the notification was a phishing scam.
Microsoft first disclosed the hack in January, stating that a password spray attack gained the group access to “a very small percentage of Microsoft corporate email accounts” in late 2023. Employees with compromised emails included members of the senior leadership, cybersecurity and legal teams.
At the time, Microsoft said vulnerabilities in its systems were not to blame for the attack but that it would be improving security. However, the US government has brought the heat against Microsoft, with a March report from the Cyber Safety Review Board finding the company’s “security culture was inadequate and requires an overhaul.” In April, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued an order requiring federal agencies to analyze hacked emails and secure Microsoft cloud accounts, among other measures. CISA notified all impacted agencies and required them to provide regular updates on the steps taken to thwart this “grave and unacceptable risk.”This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/microsoft-reveals-further-emails-compromised-by-russian-hack-130014275.html?src=rss

OpenAI has launched a new tool called CriticGPT, a new artificial intelligence (AI) large language model (LLM) designed to assist humans in spotting mistakes in code written by ChatGPT.

In an effort to improve the accuracy and usefulness of its GPT models, OpenAI uses a technique called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), where humans review and critique output from the AI models. CriticGPT is designed to aid the AI trainers in the RLHF process.

According to OpenAI, “When people get help from CriticGPT to review ChatGPT code they outperform those without help 60% of the time,” in an experiment that showed a human AI trainer preferred critiques from a team of human-plus-CriticGPT over a human without the AI tool 60% of the time.

The major benefit of pairing a human and an AI to provide feedback in the RLHF process is that CriticGPT can write more comprehensive and thorough critiques than a human operating alone, and humans can step in when the model is reporting hallucinated errors, or when CriticGPT is reporting too many unhelpful “nitpicks”.

How was CriticGPT trained?

CriticGPT was also trained using OpenAI’s RLHF methodologies. Trainers took code written by ChatGPT and then inserted errors into the code. They then wrote example feedback that a model could provide if it had found the inserted error.

The trainer then compared output from the new model, looking at multiple critiques of the modified segment of code and seeing when the model had correctly identified and explained the error inserted.

What are the limitations of CriticGPT?

The training data so far for CriticGPT has focused on only short answers written by ChatGPT and further research and development will be required for it to address longer and more complex outputs. Additionally, it is not free from the dreaded AI hallucinations that plague LLMs.

Further work will also need to be carried out before the model can identify and critique dispersed errors – it currently can only handle discrete errors that appear in one place.

What’s next for CriticGPT?

OpenAI intends to integrate CriticGPT into its RLHF pipeline and then go on to scale the work further and increase its utility.

Google TV just added 10 more free streaming channels, boosting the total to over 130

Google TV just got ten more channels, which is good news if you’ve been craving Johnny Carson TV

Google TV’s free ad-supported TV (FAST) service was already pretty big, and now it’s even bigger. The streamer has added 10 new channels for US viewers and is rolling them out as part of its June 2024 update.

The new channels were spotted by StreamingBetter, and they follow the eight new channels added in March. The new channels are listed under Google TV in the “live” part of the Google TV interface.

The new channels spotted so far are:

Google TV’s free channels are likely to expand even more

Google is betting big on FAST, which is an extremely fast-growing market: that growth is why everybody appears to be launching either a free TV service or one that’s funded at least in part by advertising.

As we reported earlier this month, Google has launched a brand new advertising network called the Google TV Network and intends to bring it to the Google TV service across multiple brands. Manufacturers using Google’s TV platform include the likes of Sony, Hisense and TCL, and the ad network will also include Android devices and Chromecast. With the Google TV Network, brands will be able to buy ads across the free channels and will be able to benefit from newly introduced options including unskippable ads before, during and after shows.

One of the reasons FAST is growing so quickly is because so many of us are feeling the pinch. Given the choice between yet another subscription – a subscription that’s likely to increase in price – or putting up with a couple of unskippable ads to get shows for free, many people are going for the latter option. And the more channels Google can add, the more tempting its FAST service is likely to be.

Some recent Google TV set launches include the Sony Bravia 9 and the TCL QM851G – both high-end sets, so you might be grateful for a little free entertainment once you’ve bought them. Of course, you can add Google TV to any of the best TVs cheaply using the Chromecast with Google TV.
