This One Million Checkbox game is sparking an internet war – and it’s taken hours of our life we’ll never get back
All you have to do in this game is check and uncheck boxes – so what is it that makes us keep going back?
A lot of the time, the most addictive games are the simplest ones, and so we present to you One Million Checkboxes. You can get the gist of this new game from its title, but the gameplay simply involves you checking and unchecking as many boxes as you like.
Simple, right? Well, if you want to stay productive today, we’d encourage you to think carefully before following that link. You run the risk of being dragged into an endless battle across a field of flashing blue and white squares.
The checked status of each box is the same for every player, which means any box you fill in might soon be made blank again by someone else – and mini-wars are breaking out all across the board as the checkers battle the uncheckers.
Up in the top right corner of the screen is a count of how many boxes you’ve checked, and how many boxes have been checked. The game, straightforward though it is, is causing a furore online, as some players try and empty the board and some try to fill it up.
Soothing or frustrating?
I made a website. it’s called “one million checkboxes dot com”. it has one million checkboxes on it.checking a box checks it for everyone.that’s it. have fun! pic.twitter.com/KBF4UqCMJcJune 26, 2024
The game comes from creator Nolen Royalty, who has made similar games and internet oddities before. Judging by the developer’s X feed, they weren’t expecting quite so many people to get involved – some 500,000, by the last count.
And you don’t have to go far on the web to find reactions: it’s “kinda soothing” to some, but “maximally frustrating” to others, so your mileage may vary. What’s clear is that it’s addictive enough to take up a significant chunk of the day.
At the time of writing, the number of checked boxes is up to around 560,000, and the activity is frenetic up at the top of the board. Scroll down, or use the jump box down in the lower right corner, and you can find calmer blocks of the board to play around in.
The big question is: what happens when every box on the board is checked? Or every box on the board is cleared? Perhaps nothing at all – but judging by the time we’ve spent glued to the checkbox action, we might never end up finding out.

The show can be seen on YouTube and Twitch.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess is the only actual new release scheduled for the presentation. It launches July 19 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. It’s a blend of action, strategy, and tower defense gameplay elements, all of it driven by Japanese folklore and themes. It’s a third-party day-and-date launch on Xbox Game Pass, too.
Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster was announced on Wednesday. Though it doesn’t appear to be a full remake, just a remaster of the 2006 zombie survival classic, it will be the first Dead Rising playable natively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X (with a companion coming to Windows PC).
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess was announced a year ago in June 2023; it’s in development at Capcom’s Division 1 studio, the same unit behind the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry series. Gameplay is divided into a day-night cycle where the player builds up defenses under the sunshine, and then defends a village, and its divine patron, from evil spirits at night.
Resident Evil 7: biohazard launched in 2017, with a native re-release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in 2022. The iOS and MacOS versions are due on July 2. Resident Evil’s latest release was 2021’s Resident Evil Village, which launched on Mac and iOS devices in October 2023.

This dangerous new Mac malware is being spread by Google Ads
A new version of AMOS is targeting macOS users looking for the new Arc browser.
Hackers are running malicious Google Ads campaigns targeting victims interested in the new Arc browser, with the aim of installing information-stealing malware on their Mac devices.
Cybersecurity researchers from Malwarebytes spotted a new campaign on the Google Ads network, seemingly promoting the new (and quite popular) Arc browser.
The campaign belongs to ‘Coles & Co’ and is linking to the domain name archost[.]org. However, people who click on the link are redirected to arc-download[.]com, a completely fraudulent site offering Arc for Mac only.
PR move
On the surface, the downloaded DMG file behaves just as a legitimate file would, except for the right-click to open trick which bypasses security protections.
What the victims actually end up with is Poseidon, a variant of Atomic Stealer (AMOS), a known infostealer capable of extracting all kinds of information from the target devices, from sensitive files, to cryptocurrency wallet data, to stored passwords, to browser data.
There seems to be plenty of code overlapping between AMOS and Poseidon, but its creator – a person with the alias Rodrigo4 – said they needed a unique brand to be better recognized in the underground community.
“In simple words, people didn’t know who we were,” the developer said in a recent post.
Since the Google Ads network can show ads at the top of search engine results pages, being able to push malware through increases its chances for success dramatically.
To run a malvertising campaign, threat actors steal people’s Google business accounts, verified for running advertising campaigns and having a linked credit card for payments. Then, they create an ad campaign which promotes fraudulent websites on the top of search engine results pages. Recently, cybersecurity experts started warning users to be careful when searching for things, and to type in known addresses instead of simply googling them.

EU competition chief jabs at Apple from both sides over AI delay
It’s safe to say Apple and the European Commission aren’t exactly bosom buddies. The two sides have been at loggerheads over Apple’s compliance — or alleged lack thereof — with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), a law designed to rein in the power of major tech companies.
Apple said last week it would delay the rollout of certain features in the European Union, including Apple Intelligence AI tools, over concerns “that the interoperability requirements of the DMA could force us to compromise the integrity of our products in ways that risk user privacy and data security.” As it turns out, the EU is not exactly happy about that decision.
The call to push back the rollout of Apple Intelligence in the EU is a “stunning, open declaration that they know 100 percent that this is another way of disabling competition where they have a stronghold already,” EU competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager said at a Forum Europa event, according to Euractiv. Vestager added that the “short version of the DMA” means companies have to be open for competition to keep operating in the region.
Not to leap to the defense of Apple here, but these comments are sure to raise an eyebrow or two, especially after Vestager also said she “was personally quite relieved that I would not get an AI-updated service on my iPhone.” Apple does intend to bring Apple Intelligence to Europe more broadly, but it’s taking a cautious approach with the tech in that region due to “regulatory uncertainties” and ensuring it won’t have to compromise on user safety.
As it stands, the European Commission is carrying out multiple investigations into the company over possible violations of the DMA. This week, it accused Apple of violating the law’s anti-steering provisions by blocking app developers from freely informing users about alternate payment options outside of the company’s ecosystem. If it’s found guilty, Apple could be on the hook for a fine of up to 10 percent of its global annual revenue. Based on its 2023 sales, that could be a penalty of up to $38 billion. The percentage of the fine can double for repeated violations.
Earlier this year, before the DMA came into force, the European Commission fined Apple €1.8 billion ($1.95 billion) over a violation of previous anti-steering rules. According to the Commission, Apple prevented rival music streaming apps from telling users that they could pay less for subscriptions if they sign up outside of iOS apps. Apple has challenged the fine. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/eu-competition-chief-jabs-at-apple-from-both-sides-over-ai-delay-140022585.html?src=rss
