Thanks to the near-annual frequency of the series’ launches, it’s hard to remember that Assassin’s Creed as a franchise is now old enough to buy its M-rated, 17-and-older self.

Because the campaign-based story shifts locations and main characters, each release, like last year’s Mirage, or this coming November’s Shadows, seems to reset the franchise as a new idea despite the fact it all pivots on the same sci-fi, time-traveling/memory-hunting concept established by Patrice Désilets in 2007.

If remarks from Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot are any guide, though, fans might start thinking of Assassin’s Creed’s own history in a more relevant way. That’s because the French publisher is pursuing remakes of some of the game’s foundational hits, stopping just short of confirming a report last year that an updated Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (2013) was on deck.

“Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve created in the past and modernize them,” Guillemot said in an interview posted to Ubisoft’s official website. “There are worlds in some of our older Assassin’s Creed games that are still extremely rich.”

Guillemot has the right instinct that Assassin’s Creed comprises distinct worlds and eras fans would love to dive back into. You saw some of that in last year’s launch of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which took the series back to its origins as an adventure set in the Persia during the Islamic Golden Age, like the original game. Subsequent entries embraced the Italian Renaissance, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, Victorian England, and then ancient Egypt, Greece, and the Vikings’ height of power in Northern Europe.

The series has seen collected re-releases before, but these were anthologies of existing games rather than remasters or remakes. The most recent was Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag plus its companion, Assassin’s Creed Rogue, for Nintendo Switch in 2019. Before that was Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection, spanning the three Renaissance-era games from 2009 to 2011.

Why is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag so popular?

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was a launch title for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Along with Assassin’s Creed: Rogue (originally launched for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) it was a fork off the American Revolution chapter introduced the year before, and took advantage of an historical New World timeframe to give players a full-blown, open world pirate fantasy in the Caribbean Sea. Black Flag’s naval combat systems later became the basis for Skull and Bones, which launched in February after repeated delays.

In addition to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, set in Japan’s feudal era (specifically the 16th century), Ubisoft is developing a new chapter currently codenamed Assassin’s Creed Hexe, whose story will coincide with the witchcraft trials and persecutions of the Holy Roman Empire in the late 1500s. Hexe “is going to be a very different game from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. We’re going to surprise people, I think,” Guillemot said.

Man suffers rare bee sting directly to the eyeball—it didn’t go well

He did recover. No disturbing images in the article, but a link for those who dare.

In what may be the biological equivalent to getting struck by lightning, a very unlucky man in the Philadelphia area took a very rare bee sting directly to the eyeball—and things went badly from there.

As one might expect, the 55-year-old went to the emergency department, where doctors tried to extract the injurious insect’s stinger from the man’s right eye. But it soon became apparent that they didn’t get it all.

Two days after the bee attack, the man went to the Wills Eye Hospital with worsening vision and pain in the pierced eye. At that point, the vision in his right eye had deteriorated to only being able to count fingers. The eye was swollen, inflamed, and bloodshot. Blood was visibly pooling at the bottom of his iris. And right at the border between the man’s cornea and the white of his eye, ophthalmologists spotted the problem: a teeny spear-like fragment of the bee’s stinger still stuck in place.

MacRumors Giveaway: Win an iPhone 15 Pro From GRID Studio

For this week’s giveaway, we’ve teamed up with GRID Studio to offer MacRumors readers a chance to win a 256GB iPhone 15 Pro. GRID Studio is well known for transforming old, discarded Apple devices into displayable artwork.

GRID Studio deconstructs Apple devices and artfully arranges the components underneath a glass frame. Each part is labeled and accompanied by relevant historical details. GRID Studio’s most iconic piece is the GRID 1, priced at $400.

The GRID 1 features the original Apple iPhone from 2007, highlighting the parts that made up an important part of Apple’s history. The iconic original ‌‌iPhone‌‌ casing is positioned next to the power button, headphone socket, speaker, logic board, ear piece, and other components, and this is before the days where Apple started making its own chips so there are some unique components to see.

iPod fans will be interested in the $120 GRID iPod Photo, which originally came out in 2004, and was the first iPod featuring a color display. It has the same classic click wheel design, but with a 220×176 LCD display. This model is a fun part of Apple’s past because it was the first iPod that really supported storing and showing off photos.

Most of GRID Studio’s pieces are designed to be hung on the wall, but there are also a selection of products that can be displayed on a shelf or tabletop. The $99 GRID 3GS Wooden Tabletop Frame has an attractive wood backing and acrylic cover that can be hung on the wall or displayed upright on a table with a support rod.

The ‌iPhone‌ 3GS followed the ‌iPhone‌ 3G, and that “S” was meant to represent speed. It had a processor that was twice as fast, and was Apple’s first foray into really focusing on blazing fast performance. The GRID 3GS features the classic pre-iPhone 4 design, and it looks great in the wooden frame.

GRID Studio is hosting a summer sale that will last until July 17, and various GRID pieces are available at up to 50 percent off.

The first-gen Nomad Base One Max 3-in-1 MagSafe charger is $55 off

Image: Nomad

Nomad is running an overstock sale of various accessories on its site, and an especially notable one is its original Base One Max 3-in-1 MagSafe Charger — offered in black or silver for $95 ($55 off) or in an extra-fancy gold “limited edition” for $120 ($30 off).
This is the original, first-gen model from last year that simultaneously charges a MagSafe iPhone, Apple Watch, and compatible AirPods (or other wireless charging-capable earbuds). It’s got a weighty heft to it, being made of a mix of aluminum and glass, and it’s nearly identical to the revised model that Nomad released soon after, which added Apple Watch fast charging. Faster charging for Apple Watch Series 7 and newer models is a nice feature, but that updated Base One Max runs a much costlier $170. Ouch.

Even at the first-gen Base One Max’s discounted price you can definitely spend less to get a simple 3-in-1 wireless charger, though many of them out there are only “MagSafe Compatible,” meaning they top out at 7.5W on even the latest iPhones. The MagSafe pad portion of the Base One Max charges an iPhone at up to 15W speeds, and it’s Qi-compatible, so you can rest non-magnetic iPhones and even Android phones on it for a slower trickle charge. Also, the Base One Max is one of the nicer-looking designs out there, if you value a simplistic aesthetic and premium materials.

Samsung might finally be about to deal with the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s biggest problem

A redesign could see sharp corners replaced with a rounded look

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is on of the best phones Samsung has ever made. Much of this is down to its incredible camera, which gives it a coveted spot as one of our best Android phones. Unfortunately, there’s one thing that lets this phone down, and that’s its sharp corners. But Samsung could finally be about to deal with this problem with the rumored Galaxy S25 Ultra, likely to be released next year.

This all dates back to Samsung’s decision in 2022 to make its Galaxy S22 Ultra a note-style design with an S Pen integrated directly into it. This has led to hands all around the world being dug into so uncomfortably that it can ruin the whole experience of owning the phone for some people.

All of this could be about to change, according to Ice Universe, a long-trusted and reliable leaker of all things Samsung. He’s previously documented how using the phone has caused damage to his hand and now he’s claiming that the squared corners are going to be replaced with rounded ones. The tipster goes a step further and says the corners will be “really rounded”. Hands can breathe a figurative sigh of relief.

I can confirm 100% that the Galaxy S25 Ultra will not crush your palm again. It’s really rounded! pic.twitter.com/rKf8TmCoAsJune 27, 2024

Rounded corners are already commonplace in the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Plus models so this won’t feel like the biggest design change Samsung has ever made. Bringing continuity across the three handsets in the series will certainly make sense, not just from an ergonomic point of view but also in terms of a design ethos.

Long term Galaxy S24 Ultra users might be concerned that the rounded corners might mean a drop in S Pen integration but this is apparently not the case.

Samsung’s love affair with square corners is apparently not over, though. If the leaks are to be trusted, then Samsung has plans to introduce equally harsh square corners into the rumored upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 6. Dropping them for one phone and introducing them for another won’t make sense to most users but only time will tell what designs Samsung opts for.

It’s a showdown with Sabretooth in latest Deadpool and Wolverine trailer

“People have waited decades for this fight. It’s not gonna be easy.”

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman star in Deadpool and Wolverine.

It’s safe to say that Marvel Studios’ Deadpool and Wolverine is one of the most hotly anticipated releases of the summer. We’ve had a teaser and full trailer, and now the studio has released a second one-minute trailer with a surprise appearance bound to delight X-Men fans everywhere. It’s none other than Sabretooth, played by the same actor, Tyler Mane, who portrayed the character in 2000’s X-Men. And he’s got a score to settle with Wolverine.

As previously reported, Ryan Reynolds found the perfect fit with 2016’s Deadpool, starring as Wade Wilson, a former Canadian special forces operative (dishonorably discharged) who develops regenerative healing powers that heal his cancer but leave him permanently disfigured with scars all over his body. Wade decides to become a masked vigilante, turning down an invitation to join the X-Men and abandon his bad-boy ways. The first Deadpool was a big hit, racking up $782 million at the global box office, critical praise, and a couple of Golden Globe nominations for good measure. Deadpool 2 was released in 2018 and was just as successful.

Deadpool and Wolverine reunites Reynolds with many familiar faces from the first two films. Morena Baccarin is back as Wade’s girlfriend Vanessa, along with Leslie Uggams as Blind Al; Karan Soni as Wade’s personal chauffeur, taxi driver Dopinder; Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead; Stefan Kapičić as the voice of Colossus; Shioli Kutsuna as Negasonic’s mutant girlfriend, Yukio; Randal Reeder as Buck; and Lewis Tan as X-Force member Shatterstar.
