90 Workers Given a Choice: Relocate Across the US, or Leave the Company
“The outdoor-apparel brand Patagonia has given 90 U.S. employees a choice,” reports Business Insider: “tell the company by Friday that you’re willing to relocate or leave your job.” [Alternate URL here.]
The employees all work in customer services, known at Patagonia as the customer-experience, or CX, team, and have been allowed to work remotely to field calls and inquiries. These workers received a text and email Tuesday morning about an “important” meeting… Two company executives, Amy Velligan and Bruce Old, told staff in a 15-minute video meeting that the team would be moving to a new “hub” model. CX employees are now expected to live within 60 miles of one of seven “hubs” — Atlanta; Salt Lake City; Reno, Nevada; Dallas; Austin; Chicago; or Pittsburgh. Workers were offered $4,000 toward relocation costs and extra paid time off. Those willing to relocate were told to do so by September 30.
If CX staff are not willing to live near a hub city, they must leave the company. They were given 72 hours, until Friday, to confirm their decision… Access to company laptops and phones was shut off later that day until employees either agreed to relocate or said they wanted the severance, one affected CX worker said…
Both employees who spoke to Business Insider believed this was because Patagonia didn’t want to handle the increased demands of employees in states with higher costs of living. “We’ve been asking for raises for a long time, and they keep telling us that your wage is based on a Reno cost of living and where you choose to live is on you.”
According to the article, “The company hopes to bring staff together at the hubs at least once every six weeks for in-person training, company gatherings, or ‘Activism Hours’.” A company spokesperson described the changes as “crucial for us to build a vibrant team culture,” and said there were workers who had been complaining about feeling disconnected. Though there may be another motive:
“The reality is that our CX team has been running at 200% to 300% overstaffed for much of this year,” she added. “While we hoped to reach the needed staffing levels through attrition, those numbers were very low, and retention remained high.”
One affected worker told Business Insider that the company’s proposal “was very factual. If you don’t live in these seven metro areas, you either need to move there or give us your stuff and hit the brick. If we don’t respond by Friday, they will assume that we have chosen the severance package and we’ll start that process.”
One worker added that the severance package they received was generous…

Uber and Lyft now required to pay Massachusetts rideshare drivers $32 an hour

Rideshare drivers in Massachusetts will soon get company-provided benefits, as well as a minimum pay of $32.50 per hour, starting on August 15th. That’s thanks to a new settlement between the state and rideshare companies Uber and Lyft, four years after Attorney General Andrea Campbell sued the companies, asserting their drivers ought to be considered employees under state law.
The two companies also agreed to pay a combined $175 million, the bulk of which will be paid out to “current and former drivers who were underpaid by the companies,” Campbell’s office announced yesterday. The office says it will release details about who qualifies and how to apply “in coming weeks.” Despite the settlement and the original thrust of the suit, drivers will still be considered independent contractors.
For years, we have heard from drivers about the difficulties and struggles they face daily without access to fair pay and benefits, despite the role they play in our transportation system and even our economy. Still, drivers in the state will get yearly inflation-based pay raises and other employee-style benefits, such as being able to earn up to 40 hours of sick leave a year, paid at $20 per hour. Uber and Lyft will also give drivers stipends so they can buy healthcare and sign up for the state’s family and medical leave program, and will cover work-related injuries.
To ensure they’re complying with the agreement, the companies have to carry out annual audits and submit reports to the Attorney General’s office. Punishment for violations could include “any applicable restitution, fines, and penalties,” according to the published settlement.
The rideshare companies have mostly avoided being regulated this way in California after successfully persuading voters there to pass a 2020 law that exempted businesses from being required to treat gig workers as employees; that’s been winding its way through state courts. The Massachusetts settlement accounts for that, requiring them to stop supporting a similar ballot initiative campaign. DoorDash and Instacart have also said they’re backing off, according to local reporting by WBUR.

Epic boss battles against mythical creatures are all the rage these days (we’re looking at you FromSoftware) and with Black Myth: Wukong, that tradition continues.
Being loosely based on China’s most famous fantasy novel, “Journey to the West”, you’ll play as the Destined One, taking on all those that are in your path to confront your destiny.
Below, we’ll break down a bunch of info on Black Myth: Wukong including its release date, trailers, platforms, editions, and more, so you know as much as possible before diving into this incredible-looking game.
Black Myth: Wukong release date
It seems like we’ve been waiting an age for Black Myth: Wukong to come out but we now finally have a release date – for some platforms at least…
Black Myth: Wukong will release on August 20, 2024 on PS5 and PC. Xbox owners, however, will have to wait longer.
This is due to the game not meeting Game Science’s “quality standards”, therefore needing some more time to cook in the oven.
As of right now, there is no new release date for Xbox consoles. So, unfortunately, it’s just a waiting game for when Black Myth: Wukong will be ready on those devices.
Black Myth: Wukong trailers
There have been quite a few different trailers for Black Myth: Wukong, so we’ll just detail three in timeline order so you’re able to get the full picture.
The first trailer that we saw from the game was actually a massive gameplay reveal. This is pretty unheard of when it comes to trailers of any kind, so it was a great surprise, and one that really wowed gamers.
The fast-paced action and Soulslike nature, definitely grabbed the attention of most, with the added layer of impressive visuals that looked ‘next gen’.
Next up, we’ve got another lengthy trailer featuring a six minute cutscene, showing off Game Science’s attention to the cinematic nature of the game.
And finally, we have the release date trailer. This one give us the most details about the different areas that you’ll be visiting in the game, coupled with a glimpse at various bosses, almost FromSoft style.
Black Myth: Wukong platforms
Black Myth: Wukong will be playable on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S only.
This means it’s one of those titles that is looking to skip the older generation of consoles, hopefully in an effort to provide a game that is of the highest fidelity possible without having to cater to that outdated tech.

One thing to note here is that even though the last two editions of the game are physical, there are no discs included, meaning there are only ‘digital’ copies of the game. Codes are provided in the ‘physical’ editions to give you access to the download.
What is the Black Myth: Wukong pre-order bonus?
There is one pre-order bonus for Black Myth: Wukong – the Trailblazer’s Scarlet Gourd. This is given to those who have pre-ordered “after the game launches” but is unclear whether it is provided when you first boot up, or you’ll have to progress the story.
This pre-order bonus is also available for all pre-orders no matter which edition you choose which is certainly welcomed for those who would just like to stick to the Standard Edition.
Is Black Myth: Wukong open world?
While Black Myth: Wukong is a Souslike title, it does not share the same properties as Elden Ring, for example, since it does not have an open world.
However, with this being said, the areas in the game are quite vast with various avenues to go down, so it’s not like it is a very tight, level by level design you might expect of a standard single player title.
Is Black Myth: Wukong on Game Pass?
As of right now, Black Myth: Wukong will not be on Game Pass and there haven’t been any communications to suggest that will change.
However, since the game isn’t an exclusive, it may well come to Game Pass in the future, potentially a year after launch.

4th of July sales vs Amazon Prime Day: what I’d buy in each sale as a deals expert
Looking for a mid-summer deal? Don’t buy anything until you’ve explored every angle.
The 4th of July sales and Amazon Prime Day coincide as two excellent opportunities to bag a mid-summer bargain. Generally speaking, both offer great deals and we always cover each at TechRadar. You may be wondering, however, what the differences are and what you should be shopping in each event.
Luckily I can help. I’ve been covering these events as deals editor on TechRadar for four years now so I’ve got plenty of tips, advice, and experience to share for our readers. If you’ve got your 4th of July shopping list ready but are wondering whether you should simply wait until Prime Day (or even Black Friday), then I’ll tell you exactly what to expect in each sale.
While you’re here, I highly recommend bookmarking our 4th of July sales and Amazon Prime Day hub pages, which we’ll be using to roundup all the best deals in each event. If you’re looking for expert-picked deals, these pages should be your first port of call over the next month.
The key differences, explained
The 4th of July sales are a ‘traditional’ sales event
The 4th of July sales are what I’d call a ‘traditional’ sales event – one where the deals are shared between online retailers and brick and mortar stores. Overall, it’s a pretty similar setup to other federal holiday sales like Memorial Day and Labor Day, which are other seasonal sales that tend to feature similar types of deals.
Amazon Prime Day, on the other hand, is an online exclusive mega-sale at the world’s biggest retailer. It’s a two day event that’s all about Amazon specifically and you’ll need to be an active Amazon Prime member to get access to the exclusive deals on offer.
It’s worth noting that other retailers have started to try and muscle in on the action in recent years by offering their own ‘anti-Prime Day’ sales around the Amazon Prime Day period. In general, Prime Day has become a kind of mini-Black Friday event in July, although perhaps not quite as vast in content yet.
What to buy at each event

I’d primarily recommend the 4th of July sales for appliances, furniture, grills, mattresses and so on – you know, the kind of things you’d buy in an outlet store. There are plenty of other deals (more on that later), but generally speaking these core categories are the best buys for 4th of July and other seasonal sales.
Amazon Prime Day, on the other hand, I’d recommend for electronics. TVs, laptops, headphones, and things along that vein. While the retailer’s huge inventory covers a huge range of everyday essentials, it’s usually the deals on electronics that we recommend people check out here at TechRadar – especially on own-brand devices like Echo Dots, Kindle, or Fire TV Sticks. We usually find Black Friday-level deals on models that we’ve personally tested and reviewed on-site so it’s easy to recommend waiting until Prime Day to buy electronics.
It’s not that simple, however
Yep – unfortunately not. While Amazon Prime Day remains the primo mid-Summer sales event, the 4th of July sales can sometimes have some superb hidden gems. It’s not unusual to see decent price cuts on TVs, laptops, or other electronics earlier in the month at retailers like Dell, HP, Best Buy, and others.
Right now, for example, the official HP Store is running its own 4th of July sale that’s offering up to 55% off its range of Pavilion, Envy, and Spectre laptops – one of the better events we’ve seen from the retailer in recent months. Dell is also hosting a ‘Summer Sale’ right now with decent price cuts, although we could potentially see an even better ‘Black Friday in July’ sale at some point based on recent years.
Because of this it’s definitely worth at least checking out the 4th of July sales – even if you’re shopping for electronics. In general we expect Amazon Prime Day to have better deals overall but there could be a few hidden gems here or there – which we’ll of course be including in our 4th of July sales roundup.
Amazon’s last-gen Kindle Paperwhite is on sale for 50 bucks right now

Lately, it seems as though the biggest happenings in the E Ink world revolve around large note-taking devices like the Kindle Scribe and color offerings such as the apt-titled Kobo Libra Colour. That said, if you’re looking for a basic ebook reader to burn through your summer reading list, there’s nothing wrong with picking up a last-gen e-reader like the 2018 Kindle Paperwhite — which happens to be on sale at Amazon (via Woot) in used condition with ads for $49.99.
Amazon’s last-gen Paperwhite has become more difficult to find since the arrival of the 2021 model, even if it isn’t a dramatic step down in terms of features. It still carries an IPX8 rating for full resistance against water immersion, as well as a crisp six-inch, 300ppi display and support for Audible audiobooks via Bluetooth headphones. The newer Paperwhite sports a bigger display and better backlighting — not to mention wireless charging, if you opt for the 32GB Signature Edition — but it rarely drops below $100 in price, even when on sale. The real travesty here is the fact that the 10th-gen Paperwhite only offers a mere 8GB of storage in its base configuration and uses Micro USB for charging instead of USB-C, which, even in 2018, felt like a miss.

More deals, discounts, and ways to save
The recent discontinuation (RIP) of the last-gen iPad means the 10th-gen iPad is now the de facto choice for anyone seeking an entry-level tablet from Apple. That’s not such a bad thing, though, especially when you consider the base model is on sale at Amazon for $321 ($28 off). It features an older A14 Bionic chip, yet it’s still great at handling basic tablet things, from reading to streaming. Plus, it cribs many design elements from the iPad Air, including a larger 10.9-inch display and support for USB-C. Read our review.
Although Prime Day doesn’t officially kick off until July 16th, that hasn’t stopped Amazon from dropping an array of Prime exclusives ahead of the two-day event. Right now, for example, you can pick up the latest Echo Dot Kids at Amazon for $27.99 ($32 off), which matches its lowest price to date. The kid-friendly smart speaker is nearly indistinguishable from the standard version, only it includes a year of Amazon Kids Plus service and one of two animal-themed configurations. You can currently pick up a used pair of the Sonos Ace in like-new condition at Best Buy for $381.99 ($67 off). Their marque trick still needs a bit of work — the TV Audio Swap feature that allows you to transfer sound from a Sonos soundbar to the headphones is a bit spotty, to say the least — but they remain an impressive pair of first-gen headphones with superb comfort, great noise cancellation, and a helpful transparency mode that’s second only to Apple’s in how natural it sounds.
