Meta caught an Israeli marketing firm running hundreds of fake Facebook accounts
Meta caught an Israeli marketing firm using fake Facebook accounts to run an influence campaign on its platform, the company said in its latest report on coordinated inauthentic behavior. The scheme targeted people in the US and Canada and posted about the Israel-Hamas war.
In all, Meta’s researchers uncovered 510 Facebook accounts, 11 pages, 32 Instagram accounts and one group that were tied to the effort, including fake and previously hacked accounts. The accounts posed as “Jewish students, African Americans and ‘concerned’ citizens” and shared posts that praised Israel’s military actions and criticized the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and college protests. They also shared Islamaophobic comments in Canada, saying that “radical Islam poses a threat to liberal values in Canada.”
Meta’s researchers said the campaign was linked to STOIC, a “a political marketing and business intelligence firm” based in Israel, though they didn’t speculate on the motives behind it. STOIC was also active on X and YouTube and ran websites “focused on the Israel-Hamas war and Middle Eastern politics.”
According to Meta, the campaign was discovered before it could build up a large audience and many of the fake accounts were disabled by the company’s automated systems. The accounts reached about 500 followers on Facebook and about 2,000 on Instagram.
The report also notes that the people behind the accounts seemed to use generative AI tools to write many of their comments on the pages of politicians, media organizations and other public figures.“These comments generally linked to the operations’ websites, but they were often met with critical responses from authentic users calling them propaganda,” Meta’s policy director for threat disruption, David Agranovich, said during a briefing with reporters “So far, we have not seen novel Gen AI driven tactics that would impede our ability to disrupt the adversarial networks behind them.”This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/meta-caught-an-israeli-marketing-firm-running-hundreds-of-fake-facebook-accounts-150021954.html?src=rss

Arm says its next-gen mobile GPU will be its most ‘performant and efficient’
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge
On Wednesday, IP core designer Arm announced its next-generation CPU and GPU designs for flagship smartphones: the Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis G925 GPU. Both are direct successors to the Cortex-X4 and Immortalis G720 that currently power MediaTek’s Dimensity 9300 chip inside flagship smartphones like the Vivo X100 and X100 Pro and Oppo Find X7.
Arm changed the naming convention for its Cortex-X CPU design to highlight what it says is a much faster CPU design. It claims the X925’s single-core performance is 36 percent faster than the X4 (when measured in Geekbench). Arm says it increased the AI workload performance by 41 percent, time to token, with up to 3MB of private L2 cache.
The Cortex-X925 brings a new generation of Cortex-A microarchitectures (“little” cores) with it, too: the Cortex-A725, which Arm says has 35 percent better performance efficiency than last-gen’s A720 and a 15 percent more power-efficient Cortex-A520.
Arm’s new Immortalis G925 GPU is its “most performant and efficient GPU” to date, it says. It’s 37 percent faster on graphics applications compared to the last-gen G720, with improved ray-tracing performance with intricate objects by 52 percent and improved AI and ML workloads by 34 percent — all while using 30 percent less power.
For the first time, Arm will offer “optimized layouts” of its new CPU and GPU designs that it says will be easier for device makers to “drop” or implement into their own system on chip (SoC) layouts. Arm says this new physical implementation solution will help other companies get their devices to market faster, which, if true, means we could see more devices with Arm Cortex-X925 and / or Immortalis G925 than the few that shipped with its last-gen ones.
As a bonus for mobile game developers, Lumen ray tracing on Unreal Engine now supports Immortalis. It’s unclear if that alone will be a big enough incentive for more game developers to add ray tracing to their mobile games or how those games would perform. As Andy Craigen, director of product management at Arm, explained when the company launched its first hardware-based ray-tracing Immortalis design in 2022: “The challenge is that ray tracing techniques can use significant power, energy, and area across the mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC).”
We asked Arm what other mobile devices use its ray-tracing Immortalis GPUs and when we can expect to see a new phone using the Immortalis G925. Currently, the iQOO Neo 9pro is using the Dimensity 9300, while the Xiaomi 14 series and OnePlus 12 series use the Cortex-X4 and Cortex-A720 in a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Arm said it expects new phones with its new core designs to become available in late 2024, but could not say from which companies.
However, JC Hsu, Corporate Senior Vice President at MediaTek was quoted in Arm’s press release as saying: “MediaTek is committed to supporting the latest Armv9 Cortex-X925 CPU and Immortalis-G925 GPU Client solution in our next generation flagship chipset, Dimensity 9400, later this year.” So, that could mean we’ll see a new Vivo or Oppo by the end of 2024.
Not too many phones currently use Arm’s Cortex and Immortalis designs together. Other than the current-gen phones already named above, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9200 chip that powered the Vivo X90, X90 Pro, and Oppo Find X6 was the first to use Arm’s flagship hardware-based ray-tracing GPU design, the Immortalis G715, with the Cortex-X4. But it’s more common to find the Cortex paired with another GPU design in a mobile chip like Samsung’s Exynos 2400, which you’ll find in Samsung’s Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus.

Families of Uvalde shooting victims sue Activision over Call of Duty’s role
Suit: Activision is “manipulating players’ brain chemistry,” ignoring “use by minors.”
The families of multiple victims of the 2022 mass shooting at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School are suing Activision in a California civil court, alleging that the company’s Call of Duty games act as a “training camp for mass shooters.”
The lawsuit (as obtained by Polygon) compares Activision’s Call of Duty marketing to the cigarette industry’s use of now-barred spokescartoon Joe Camel, putting the gaming company “in the wildly lucrative business of training adolescents to become gunmen.” The Call of Duty games “are chewing up alienated teenage boys and spitting out mass shooters,” the lawsuit alleges, and in Uvalde, the games “knowingly exposed the Shooter to the weapon, conditioned him to see it as the solution to his problems, and trained him how to use it.”
Meta platforms is also a party to the lawsuit for “explicit, aggressive marketing” of firearms to minors via Instagram.
Two new kits for The Sims 4 arrive tomorrow, focused on relaxing vacations and cozy dining
Two new kits are coming to The Sims 4 tomorrow, offering poolside decor and bistro furniture.
Developer Maxis and publisher Electronic Arts (EA) have revealed two new downloadable content (DLC) kits coming to its popular free-to-play life simulation game The Sims 4: The Sims 4 Riviera Retreat kit and The Sims 4 Cozy Bistro kit.
The Sims 4 Riviera Retreat kit will offer a range of items designed to help you “create the most peaceful of spaces showered with timeless antiquity and contemporary styles”. This includes new linen furniture, decorative archways, rustic wicker recliners, gentle waterfalls, and leafy pergolas. It looks like the perfect add-on if you’re looking for new ways to add a little extra flair to your in-game patios, gardens, or poolside areas.
As the name would suggest, The Sims 4 Cozy Bistro kit will let you create more intimate dining spaces with a selection of colorful awnings, Parisian bistro furniture, intricately detailed windows, and vintage decorative items. Although some of the included build mode items might be a good fit for an art deco home, the pack is intended to “accent your bar or lounge type lot” first and foremost.
Both kits will become available tomorrow (May 30, 2024) and will cost the standard price of $4.99 / £4.99. If you’re unfamiliar with the pricing structure of The Sims 4 add-ons, kits are currently the cheapest way to expand your game. They are intended to offer a bite-size content injection at a more affordable price compared to the larger, and more expensive, expansion packs, game packs, and stuff packs.
Although some introduce basic gameplay elements, the bulk of most kits comes in the form of new build mode items centered around a specific theme. Even if you’re not interested in paying for extra content, you can still download and play the base version of The Sims 4 for free on PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One now.

George Clooney and Brad Pitt reunite in the trailer for hitman buddy comedy movie Wolfs – and it’ll come to Apple TV Plus
What do you get when two lone wolves are forced to work together? By the looks of this trailer, you get some seriously entertaining action
Wolfs, the new Apple and Sony movie featuring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, has had not just one trailer this week but two. After an enigmatic and mildly amusing teaser (see below), the proper trailer was released today (see further down this article) and it looks like the movie’s going to be worth making a trip to the cinema for before it likely comes to Apple TV Plus.
Wolfs is coming to theaters on September 20, and in addition to the dream team of Pitt and Clooney the trailer also features Amy Ryan, who was magnificent in Apple’s excellent and oddball Colin Farrell PI series Sugar. It’s an action comedy that makes extensive use of the leads’ considerable charm, and it looks like it’ll be a lot of fun.
Wolfs movie: what we know so far
The premise for Wolfs is a fun one. Clooney plays a professional fixer who’s been hired to cover up a very high-profile crime that appears to be a particularly horrible murder – but when he goes to work he discovers that a second fixer, played by Pitt, has also been hired for the very same job. Forced to work together or sacrifice their bounty, the two lone wolves soon find their night spiralling out of control in unexpected ways.
Directed by Jon Watts and with both leads producing, Wolfs was the subject of a bidding war due to its stellar cast: reuniting Clooney and Pitt is likely to mean box office gold. As with Apple’s recent hit Argyle, it’ll make its way into theaters first and then will stream globally on Apple TV Plus. The streaming date hasn’t yet been confirmed though.
In addition to directing the movie, Jon Watts is also the writer and producer and the cast also includes Never Have I Ever‘s Poorna Jagannathan and The Walking Dead‘s Austin Abrams. What we don’t know so far is what those excellent actors will be doing, or much about the plot.
It’s possible we’ll see Pitt and Clooney reunite again after this movie: there’s talk of a new Ocean’s Eleven movie, with Clooney telling Uproxx that a script exists and “it’s actually a great script”. According to Clooney, it’s so good that “we may end up doing another one,” although as yet it’s only a possibility rather than an actual movie.
Wolfs will be in cinemas on September 20 and will likely stream on Apple TV Plus shortly afterwards.

A certification has been discovered that suggests PlayStation VR2 headset owners could soon use the virtual reality device with PCs.
This potential move away from being a PS5-exclusive device was noticed by VR enthusiast Brad Lynch who took to the X platform (formerly Twitter) to share the license.
“Sony is certifying an adapter to allow PSVR 2 hardware to work on PCs,” he said. The date of certification is dated as March 27, 2024.

While no other details have been made available, nor has Sony released any information, the Japanese-based company did say it was working on PSVR 2 support for PC in February via a blog post.
A non-specific 2024 release date was given with the manager of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment saying: “We’re pleased to share that we are currently testing the ability for PS VR2 players to access additional games on PC to offer even more game variety in addition to the PS VR2 titles available through PS5.
“We hope to make this support available in 2024, so stay tuned for more updates.”
The previous versions of the headset were modded to work on the PC but it was unofficial, so the prospect of official support for the PSVR 2 will be welcomed.
PSVR 2 support for PC could boost interest in the headset
The move to make PC support possible could bring in a new wave of attention which is much-needed for the device as underwhelming sales have been reported.
In mid-March, Bloomberg journalist Takashi Mochizuki claimed that sales of the PSVR 2 headset have slowed ‘progressively since its launch and stocks of the device are building up.’
It was then that Sony was alleged to have put a stop to the production of the headset due to a backlog of unsold units.
While the technology giant became one of the front runners in the virtual reality gear market when the product dropped in 2023, the hefty price tag hasn’t been favorable.
