US arrests man allegedly behind enormous botnet that enabled cyberattacks and fraud

It’s a scheme that “reads like it’s ripped from a screenplay,” according to one Commerce Department official. Thirty-five-year-old Chinese national YunHe Wang allegedly helped run an international botnet that deployed VPN programs to infect more than 19 million IP addresses around the world.
After distributing malware through programs such as MaskVPN and DewVPN, Wang allegedly operated the botnet and sold access to the compromised IP addresses, according to the Department of Justice. The department says his customers then went on to commit their own crimes under the concealment of the proxied addresses.
The botnet, known as 911 S5, “facilitated cyber-attacks, large-scale fraud, child exploitation, harassment, bomb threats, and export violations,” according to a statement from Attorney General Merrick Garland. The US worked with international partners to dismantle the operation, which infected computers in almost 200 countries, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray.
The scheme sold access “to millions of malware-infected computers worldwide, enabling criminals over the world to steal billions of dollars, transmit bomb threats, and exchange child exploitation materials,” said Matthew S. Axelrod, Commerce Department Bureau of Industry and Security assistant secretary for export enforcement. The scheme’s $100 million in profits were allegedly then used to “buy luxury cars, watches, and real estate.”
The scheme allegedly operated between 2014 and July 2022.

Compromised computers allegedly were used to conduct a host of other crimes, including defrauding pandemic relief programs. The DOJ alleges that an estimated 560,000 fraudulent insurance claims came from compromised IP addresses, for example, leading to more than $5.9 billion in fraudulent losses.
The Treasury Department on Tuesday announced sanctions against Wang and two other Chinese nationals for their alleged roles in the botnet, prohibiting transactions with them or their designated organizations.
Wang faces up to 65 years in prison if convicted on all counts, which include charges of substantive computer fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, according to the DOJ.

8BitDo’s Retro IBM-inspired keyboard could use more retro

8BitDo is releasing an IBM-inspired look for its $100 wireless mechanical keyboard. Keyboard enthusiasts love regaling normies with tales of IBM’s buckling spring keyboards and the precedent they set for today’s mechanical keyboards. But 8BitDo’s Retro Mechanical Keyboard M Edition doesn’t adopt very much from IBM’s iconic designs.
8BitDo’s Retro mechanical keyboards come in different looks that each pay tribute to classic tech. The tributes are subtle enough to avoid copyright issues. Similar to 8BitDo’s ‘80s Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) and Commodore 64 designs, the M Edition doesn’t have any official IBM logos. However, the M Edition’s color scheme, chunkier build, and typeface selection, including on the Tab key with arrows and elsewhere, are nods to IBM’s Model M, which first succeeded the Model F in 1985.
Of course, the keyboard’s naming, and the IBM behemoth and floppy disks strategically placed in marketing images, are notes of that, too:

Jaw-dropping 256-core CPU will debut in 2025 as Arm partner turns heat up on AMD and Nvidia — Ampere conspicuously leaves Intel out of equation as it claims CPU leadership ahead of Epyc
Ampere has confirmed its next generation AmpereOne CPU will have 256-cores and be significantly faster.
Having debuted its AmpereOne processor in 2023, revealing a powerhouse CPU with up to 192 single-threaded cores, the highest in the industry, Ampere is now preparing an updated version to arrive in 2025, it has revealed
The company’s annual Strategy & Roadmap Update video (which you can watch below) reveals more on its future plans, including that the next generation of AmpereOne will be fabricated on a 3nm process node (its predecessor is 5nm) and have up to 256 cores and 12-channel DDR5 memory.
“We’re in an extreme hype cycle on AI,” Renée James, Ampere’s Founder and CEO said in the video. “This is evidenced by the near-panic purchasing of GPU capacity at the expense of all other forms of data compute. This too shall pass. All hype cycles adjust back to a new normal… At Ampere, we’re working hard to enable and build products for that phase of the new normal, the next decade of AI compute.”
40 percent more performance than other CPUs
James says Ampere is “extending our product family to include a new 256-core product that delivers 40 percent more performance than any other CPU in the market” but it’s not just about cores. There are several new features that the company says will “enable efficient performance, memory, caching, and AI compute”. The future chip will use the same air-cooled thermal solution as the current one does.
Ampere has compared its CPUs to Nvidia’s aging A10 GPU for AI inference, showing how it can run LLM models efficiently and use less power. This is a big area for Ampere which announced, as part of its roadmap update, that it is working with Qualcomm to develop a joint solution for AI inferencing using Qualcomm’s Cloud AI 100.
The company also claims that AmpereOne offers higher performance per watt than AMD’s EPYC “Bergamo”. However, as Serve The Home points out, “Ampere is using an estimated score for its part and also de-rating the AMD EPYC Bergamo performance normalizing it to GCC 13 performance.”
