WTF was that ‘Death Stranding 2’ trailer

Sony gave an extensive look at ‘Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’ during the latest PlayStation State of Play

Death Stranding has always been a strange and surreal video game but during the latest look of its sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kojima and co. have amped the weird to 11.

The first look was the closer to Sony’s Playstation State of Play livestream that took place on Wednesday, which featured other games like Metro: Awakening and the Silent Hill 2 remake. None of that, however, could top what Kojima cooked up for his latest game, a sequel to the critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic delivery simulator Death Stranding.

In this 9-minute announcement trailer, we’ve learned that Norman Reedus’ Sam Porter Bridges is back on a new journey around the world to connect the globe lest humanity face extinction. Among many of the dreamlike visuals on offer during the trailer, there’s BB spitting a flying ship out of its mouth, Troy Baker’s Higgs as an Eric Draven-inspired robot samurai, and oh yeah, the low frame rate talking puppet.

No, I did not make any of this shit up. Yes, it’s still a walking simulator. There’s no release date yet, but do yourself a favor and go watch the trailer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach right now.

Konami just stealth launched a Silent Hill game

Image: Konami

Silent Hill, the town in desperate need of a city council or something, showed up during PlayStation’s State of Play in a big way with two new trailers and a stealth drop of a new, free-to-play game.
The first game was the debut of Silent Hill: The Short Message, an all-new entry in the Silent Hill franchise. According to PlayStation’s blog, The Short Message is a short, experimental, free-to-play game meant to introduce newcomers to the joys of that idyllic foggy city. Though the name was only just revealed, details on The Short Message including screenshots and the names of the main characters — Anita and Maya — were leaked in 2022. Based on the trailer below, the leaks were accurate.

After The Short Message, Konami showed off a new combat trailer for Silent Hill 2.

It’s been more than a year since we last heard anything from Konami about the Silent Hill 2 remake. The project, headed up by The Medium developer Bloober Team, was announced in October 2022. While Konami didn’t share a release date for Silent Hill 2, merely stating it was “in development,” The Short Message, due to release today, is now available on the PlayStation Store.
Update January 31st, 2024 6:28 PM ET: Updated the story include that Silent Hill: The Short Message, is now available for download.

‘Death Stranding 2: On the Beach’ looks even more baffling than the original game

As expected, the PlayStation State of Play today featured our first look at the latest from famed developer Hideo Kojima, in the form of an exceedingly creepy and cinematic preview of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Sam, played by Norman Reedus, is back in a trailer that makes very little sense if you haven’t played the first game — and even if you did, the contents of this preview might not make a ton of sense. Rest assured, you’ll still be running around wildly impressive landscapes with your giant yellow backpack.
But it sounds like you won’t actually have to run around delivering things, because bots are able to do that in this world. The real surprise is when Sam gets captured and runs across his brother, played by the ubiquitous Troy Baker… who pulls out a guitar/gun and starts shredding to take on some enemies? Sure. It’ll still be a bit before we see what this all amounts to, as it doesn’t arrive until sometime in 2025.
At the end of the stream, though, Kojima teased an all-new project in the works, though it won’t be entering full production until after Death Stranding 2 is complete.

Death Stranding 2’s new trailer is delightfully disturbing

Image: Kojima Productions

The sequel to Death Stranding is shaping up to be just as strange as the original. At its State of Play showcase today, Sony showed off a new trailer for the game that… starts out with a particularly disturbing bit of surgery. The lengthy clip features a whole bunch of new locations outside of the US, and features the return of a villain who has been given a Joker-esque makeover. And yes, the baby makes an appearance — along with a new, talking doll.
The sequel also has an official title now: Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. It’s due to launch in 2025. Here’s the official premise:
Embark on an inspiring mission of human connection beyond the UCA. Sam — with companions by his side — sets out on a new journey to save humanity from extinction. Join them as they traverse a world beset by otherworldly enemies, obstacles and a haunting question: should we have connected?
Death Stranding 2 was first unveiled at The Game Awards in 2022 and is coming to the PS5 (at least at launch — the original made its way to the PC and iPhone eventually). It once again boasts an all-star cast of Hollywood and games industry acting talent, including Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, and Troy Baker.
The sequel is far from the only project in the works at Kojima Productions. The studio has teamed up with A24 for a live-action film based on Death Stranding and is working on a mysterious Xbox horror game called OD.

Futuristic action RPG Stellar Blade arrives on April 26

Stellar Blade, Shift Up’s action RPG initially scheduled to launch in 2023, is coming soon. Sony announced at its first State of Play of 2024 that the futuristic game will launch on April 26 as a PS5 exclusive.
The game, developed under the working title “Project Eve,” puts you in the role of Eve, a warrior from the seventh airborne squad. Xion is connected to a “semi-open world” setting called the Wasteland and the Great Desert. There, you’ll meet new characters, help the citizens of Xion and gather energy cells to sustain the city.
You can pre-order Stellar Blade beginning on February 7 at 10AM ET through the PlayStation Store and retail partners. The standard version costs $70, and a Digital Deluxe variant ($80) adds extra costumes, experience points and in-game currency. It arrives on April 26.
