Spreadsheet fanatic builds a CPU within Microsoft Excel that has a display but can’t run Excel or Doom — and no, it doesn’t work in the cloud just yet
YouTuber has built a fully functioning CPU within Excel, and it comes with its own assembly language.
Microsoft Excel is well known for its versatility (it can even run first person classic shooter Doom) – but who knew the spreadsheet software could also be used to build a functioning CPU?
It might sound ridiculous, but that’s precisely what a YouTuber named Inkbox has done, as demonstrated in a detailed 16-minute video. Inkbox achieved this feat without using any Visual Basic scripts or plugins, purely utilizing Excel’s capabilities.
The result is a 16-bit CPU that operates within Excel at a clock rate of 3Hz, complete with 128KB of RAM, a 16-color 128×128 pixel display, and a custom assembly language. What’s more, the CPU files are available on Github for anyone to try.
Excel-ASM16 assembly language
One of the most impressive aspects of this project is Inkbox’s creation of a fully functioning assembly language for the Excel CPU. Named Excel-ASM16, it includes 23 different instructions and supports variables, labels, and even binary file support. These functionalities may be basic for an assembly language, but they are quite significant given the constraints of a 16-bit CPU running within Excel.
In the source video, Inkbox provides a comprehensive explanation of the functions of Excel used in the project and how they were manipulated to create a functioning 16-bit CPU. Despite the CPU’s speed being no more than 3Hz, the time-lapse demonstration allows viewers to see the inner workings of the CPU.
Though the 16-bit CPU built within Excel has its limitations, it demonstrates an impressive level of technical skill and creativity on Inkbox’s part. The freely shared Excel-ASM16 and its CPU, with some sample programs on Github, provide an opportunity for any like-minded Excel users to explore this unique creation for themselves.

Word on the Vision Pro includes a focus mode much like the reader mode found in the desktop versions, alongside a ribbon interface that looks touch-friendly. You can create PowerPoint slides on the Vision Pro and use the app to practice presentations. Excel includes the ability to create charts and tables, analyze data, and most of the features you’d find in regular versions of Excel.
While Microsoft recently launched a 3D and VR experience for Microsoft Teams that exclusively works on Meta’s Quest headsets, Microsoft Mesh integration for the Apple Vision Pro won’t be available at launch. “We will continue bringing innovative experiences to new devices, including bringing Microsoft Mesh to Apple Vision Pro in the coming year,” says Lori Craw, director of Microsoft 365 marketing.

You’ll be able to analyze your Excel spreadsheets in VR.
Much like the Zoom app on the Apple Vision Pro, Microsoft Teams will support Apple’s “persona” (a digital avatar based on a face scan) during video calls. Microsoft has also added emoji reactions and, of course, the ability to participate in the chat experience of Teams. It will also be easy to transfer a Teams meeting from desktop or mobile to the Apple Vision Pro, or from the headset back to other devices.
While Microsoft, Disney, and others are supporting Apple’s Vision Pro headset at launch, there are some notable exceptions. Netflix and YouTube both aren’t launching Apple Vision Pro apps this week, forcing owners of Apple’s headset to stream videos from a web browser instead.

During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing weighing child safety solutions on social media, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stopped to apologize to families of children who committed suicide or experienced mental health issues after using Facebook and Instagram.
“I’m sorry for everything you have all been through,” Zuckerberg told families. “No one should go through the things that your families have suffered, and this is why we invest so much, and we are going to continue doing industry-wide efforts to make sure no one has to go through the things your families have had to suffer.”
This was seemingly the first time that Zuckerberg had personally apologized to families. It happened after Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) asked Zuckerberg if he had ever apologized and suggested that the Meta CEO personally set up a compensation fund to help the families get counseling.

eBay, one of the world’s largest online marketplaces, has agreed to pay $59 million to settle allegations by the U.S. Department of Justice, as per the Wall Street Journal. The federal government accused eBay of selling thousands of pill presses and encapsulating machines, which is a violation of the Controlled Substances Act.
The settlement, announced on Wednesday, also includes eBay’s commitment to enhance its compliance program. This move is aimed at preventing the sale of equipment that can be used in the illegal manufacture of counterfeit pharmaceuticals.
The Justice Department’s investigation revealed that numerous buyers of pill presses on eBay also purchased counterfeit molds, stamps, or dies. These tools are often used to produce pills that closely resemble those made by legitimate pharmaceutical companies. Many of these buyers have been prosecuted for their involvement in trafficking counterfeit pills.
Despite the settlement, eBay has denied being subject to the Controlled Substances Act and has not admitted any liability regarding the allegations. The company’s response to the settlement agreement has not been publicly disclosed as of yet.
This settlement marks a significant milestone for the Justice Department, being the fourth-largest of its kind under the Controlled Substances Act and the first-ever with an e-commerce platform. The case highlights the challenges and responsibilities of online marketplaces in regulating the sale of potentially illegal items.
