Windows 11 is getting multiple monitor refresh rate improvements

Photo by Becca Farsace / The Verge

Microsoft is making it a lot more convenient to use multiple high refresh rate monitors with Windows 11. The software giant has started testing a Windows 11 update that automatically adjusts refresh rates on multiple monitors depending on what content is being displayed, which should improve power usage and could even result in some GPUs spinning up their fans less often.
“We have improved refresh rate logic to allow different refresh rates on different monitors, depending on the refresh rate for each monitor and content shown on the screen,” explains Microsoft in a Windows Insider blog from last week, spotted by Neowin. “This will help most with refresh rate-dependent multitasking, like playing a game and watching a video at the same time.”
This should help maintain zero RPM mode on some Nvidia cards
If you have multiple monitors that support high refresh rates then running them at their full potential often increases the power draw of your GPU. Nvidia RTX 30- and 40-series Founders Edition cards also have a zero RPM mode, which will keep the fans at zero even when you’re watching video content on a single monitor. If you add a second high refresh rate display, this often disables the zero RPM mode and means the GPU keeps its fans spinning if you have both monitors at high refresh rates.
Microsoft’s addition should mean that these particular GPUs will maintain zero RPM mode, only switching to higher refresh rates on different monitors depending on what content is being used or shown. The workaround right now to keep zero RPM mode on multiple monitors is to manually lower the secondary monitor’s refresh rate.
The latest Canary Channel builds of Windows 11 also include Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) improvements for laptops. If battery saver is enabled then Windows 11 will now lower the refresh rate of a laptop’s screen until the battery saver mode is disabled.
Microsoft is currently testing these refresh rate improvements in Windows 11 test builds, and they should be available to all Windows 11 users in the coming months.

Geras confirmed for Mortal Kombat 1 with new ‘Keepers of Time’ trailer

Geras, a fan-favorite character introduced in the previous title, has been announced to be returning in Mortal Kombat 1.

Geras has been announced for Mortal Kombat 1 with the new Keepers of Time trailer.

Mortal Kombat 1 is one of the biggest upcoming games of the year and is slated to be a contender for one of the best fighting games when it releases on September 19. The hype train continues forward momentum as Geras, a newcomer to the series with 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11, is returning for the latest installment.

The Keepers of Time trailer shows that the immortal, ageless super soldier remains unchanged from his last appearance. Explained canonically as him “existing beyond the realms”, it makes sense he wouldn’t be impacted by the changes made by Fire God Liu Kang’s reshaping with the Hourglass. Now, he has partnered with Kang following Kronika’s defeat in the previous game. However, the story snippets here hint that unease is coming.

Geras utilizes many of his iconic time manipulation special moves, which return for the new game, including the ability to freeze his opponent in place for a full combo and his signature grappling style. He also gains a new teleport parry which looks incredibly dangerous, too. Now that Variations are gone, we’ll experiment with his complete unlocked toolkit, which is exciting.

We also see Liu Kang’s brutal brand of vigilante justice, showing that EarthRealm’s original champion isn’t going easy on anyone this time. His presumed second fatality involves him taking a downed opponent to the edge of the galaxy only to open a black hole that ruthlessly tears his challenger apart. It’s brutal stuff and showcases the creativity to be found in the violence of this entry in the long-running franchise.

Mortal Kombat 1 is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch in less than two months. Already we’ve seen Li Mei and Baraka revealed alongside Smoke to be coming back, too. There’s also been the announcement of Kombat Pack 1, which includes Homelander, Omni-Man, Peacemaker, Quan-Chi, Takeda, and Ermac. Truly, it’s looking stacked.

Mortal Kombat 1 should play great with both one of the best fight sticks or one of the best Xbox controllers. Alternatively, you’ll want one of the best PS5 controllers or one of the best Nintendo Switch controllers to get the edge on those platforms.

Apple Plans to Reduce iPad Bezel Sizes, Just Like on iPhone 15 Pro Models

Apple is shrinking the bezels on its upcoming iPhone 15 Pro models using a special manufacturing process, and the company also plans to use the same technology to reduce screen borders on future iPads, according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman.

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple is using low-injection pressure over-molding, or LIPO, to shrink the display border size on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max to 1.5 millimeters (versus around 2.2 millimeters on current iPhones).

Provided that Apple can avoid reported manufacturing issues, this could mean the iPhone 15 Pro models will have the thinnest bezels of any smartphone currently on the market, and Apple is apparently keen to replicate an equivalent achievement with its iPads, too.

As noted by Gurman, Apple first used LIPO on the Apple Watch Series 7 to make the device’s borders thinner and increase the size of the display. If Gurman’s source is accurate, LIPO is set to follow the same product trajectory as OLED display technology, which went from Apple Watch to iPhone, with OLED iPads expected to launch next year. However, which iPad model will be first to benefit from the LIPO process, and when it will arrive, remains unclear.

According to iPhone rumors, the bezels on all four iPhone 15 models are expected to be slightly curved around the edges, similar to the iPhone 11 series. Most rumors have claimed only the Pro models will have a bezel reduction this year, but a previously-accurate leaker has shared an image showing that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might have slightly thinner bezels as well.

Microsoft Teams can make you a language expert – but only if you pay

Microsoft Teams Premium users can now view live transcripts in a range of languages.

Some Microsoft Teams users will soon be able to see live transcripts of their calls, even if they are carried out in a foreign language, thanks to a new update.

The video conferencing platform has revealed it will allow users to view a live, translated transcript of their call, with a number of different languages being supported – meaning you shouldn’t fall behind following a conversation not in your native tongue.

However, only users subscribed to Microsoft Teams Premium will be able to access the translation feature, at least to begin with.

Microsoft Teams Premium translated transcript

The company shared the news in a brief entry on the official Microsoft 365 roadmap that gave little away.

“Teams Premium users can now view Live Transcript in their preferred languages during the meeting and choose to show the translated transcript with the original transcript as a reference,” the entry noted.

Exactly which languages will be available was unclear, but previous Microsoft Teams translation tools have supported a wide range, from German to Swahili and many more.

Users across mobile and desktop will be supported, with Android, iOS, Windows and Mac all set to receive the feature, which is set for a rollout date in September 2023.

Microsoft Teams Premium was initially launched in February 2023 as the company looked to offer an upgraded and more personal experience that included a number of AI-boosted plugins and features. This includes GPT 3.5, the AI language model developed by OpenAI, to automate certain mundane tasks surrounding meetings as part of its “intelligent recap” feature.

The company is currently offering Microsoft Teams Premium for $7 per user per month, a 30% discount off the $10 per user “standard price”.

The basic version of Microsoft Teams first added live translated captions in September 2022 as part of a bid to improve usability across the platform. The tool was made possible with Microsoft Cognitive Service Speech Translation Capabilities, part of the company’s Azure cloud platform, which it says offers powerful and fast translation services in real-time.

Sony’s latest PS5 beta supports Dolby Atmos and up to 8TB of M.2 SSD storage

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

Sony has started testing a new PlayStation 5 software beta that includes Dolby Atmos support, up to 8TB of M.2 SSD storage support, and a variety UI improvements. The beta is rolling out in select countries today and Sony typically makes beta features available to all PS5 consoles within a few months.
The biggest addition is Dolby Atmos support. In PS5 games it looks like Sony’s 3D Audio implementation (Tempest 3D AudioTech) will be compatible with Dolby Atmos devices like sound bars, TVs, or home theater systems. Media apps like Netflix can also update their apps on PS5 soon to support Dolby Atmos audio. “Tempest 3D AudioTech specifically renders to the Dolby Atmos audio devices in use – including overhead channels – allowing for even greater levels of immersion in the audioscapes of PS5 games,” explains Sony in a PlayStation blog.

The new Dolby Atmos support.

The PS5 currently supports up to 4TB of expandable M.2 SSD storage, but that maximum is being increased to a 8TB limit with this beta software. You’ll still need an M.2 SSD that meets the minimum requirements (mostly 5,500 MB/s or faster), but a doubling of the storage limit means there are even more storage options for PS5 owners.
Sony is also adding a bunch of UI improvements and some quality of life changes with this latest PS5 software update. You can now mute the PS5 beep sound that chirps when you turn the console on or off, or when it goes into rest mode. Sony is also offering up the option to simply change the beep volume, too.
You’ll also get a new option to enable haptic feedback from a DualSense controller while navigating around the PS5 user interface. Sound effects like moving focus from one section to another will trigger haptics with this option enabled, alongside haptic feedback for when you reach the end of a scrollable section.

Image: Sony
Second controller support.

This controller haptic feedback is available alongside a new accessibility feature that lets you assign a second controller to one account to use it as an assist controller. This is great for helping children or friends complete a difficult part of a game, or navigating around the PS5 UI.
Sony is also improving the PS5 social aspects. You’ll now be able to invite players into a closed party without adding them to a group, and also send open or closed party invites to groups instead of just a single friend. Much like Discord, you can now see a preview of someone sharing their screen before you join a party, and it’s now easier to see which friends are in parties in the friends tab. Sony is also adding emoji reactions for messages.
You can sign up to get access to Sony’s PS5 betas right here, and this particular update should roll out to all PS5 consoles in the coming months.

iPhone 15 Pro set to feature a thinner bezel, titanium frame and USB-C charging

We’re one step closer to getting a complete picture of Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15. New information on the iPhone 15 has leaked, and with it comes insight into everything from bezel size to a new charging port. For starters, the classic iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are allegedly bidding farewell to the top notch in favor of the Dynamic Island, an interactive pill-shaped cutout first released with the iPhone 14 Pro, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are likely getting a new look up top all together, with low-injection pressure over-molding (LIPO) shrinking the iPhone’s border from 2.2 millimeters to 1.5 millimeters. Apple first used LIPO in its Watch Series 7.The iPhone 15 might also finally swap out its lightning charger for a USB-C port, limiting the number of cords you need to carry around at once. Even if the change doesn’t happen for this generation, it’s only a matter of time. Last year, the European Union announced that all smartphones and tablets sold in the region must have a USB-C charging port starting in 2024. The European Parliament called the measure, which will extend to laptops two years later, “beneficial for the environment and for consumers.”Other updates to the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus might include camera upgrades and the A16 processor, first seen in the iPhone 14 Pro. The new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will reportedly have titanium edges instead of stainless steel and a 3-nanometer chip. There are also rumors of an iPhone “Ultra” hitting the market as a higher-end option. Apple will likely release at least the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro in September — based on the company’s usual schedule — and potentially at a more expensive price than previous generations. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/iphone-15-pro-set-to-feature-a-thinner-bezel-titanium-frame-and-usb-c-charging-094118389.html?src=rss

This puts it in a decent window of its own, just after the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. This makes it a cross-generational release, so you’ll be able to play even if you have yet to upgrade to current-gen consoles.

The latest trailer we received for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name was the gameplay reveal. It starts with a brief introduction to where we find Kiryu at the start of the story. We’ve included some more Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name trailers throughout this article. If you’re looking for more, however, then the official Sega YouTube channel is the place to go. You can find developer commentary videos and trailers for other Yakuza titles.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name gameplay

So far, we’ve only seen some brief glimpses of in-game action for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. It looks to be adopting the beat-em-up action featured in games like Yakuza 6 and Yakuza 0. This is not the same turn-based gameplay that Yakuza: Like a Dragon put forward back in 2020.

Players will take control of Kiryu once again, who now possess two unique fighting styles. First off there’s the Yakuza style. This focuses on classic brawler abilities and action. Then there’s Agent, which is new for Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. This is much faster and relies on high-tech gadgetry.

The game will also be a smaller experience compared to the mainline games but expect plenty of side missions and distractions while you play. Specifics on mini-games and quests have yet to be detailed.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name story and setting

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name stars Kiryu, shortly after the events of Yakuza 6. He’s gone into hiding to protect his family but is still working for an organization under a codename. The main setting is Yokohama, with an area called the Castle serving as a hub. Shortly after faking his own death, Kiryu is approached by a mysterious figure that drags him back into a criminal underworld, that runs adjacent to the dealings of the Yakuza. Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name features a secret agent theme, and Kiryu will have access to spy gadgets and new technology.

Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name aims to fill in the gap between Yakuza 6 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon. With Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth on its way as well, Kiryu’s story will be left off for future mainline entries to pick up. From the looks of things, there are plenty more adventures with Kiryu on the horizon.

The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could be virtually bezel-free

Apple is reportedly shrinking the bezels on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and other details have leaked too.

As smartphones become more advanced and more expensive, one change we’ve seen is the bezels becoming ever smaller, and with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max we might see them almost disappear completely.

This is according to Mark Gurman, a journalist and leaker with a great track record, writing in his latest Bloomberg Power On newsletter, in which he claims that these upcoming phones will have a bezel that’s just 1.5mm thick. That’s down from roughly 2.2mm on current iPhones, so while we’re only talking about a reduction of around 0.7mm, that still knocks a third off of their total size.

This is apparently thanks to a new display technology, with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s screens reportedly being made using low-injection pressure over-molding, also known as LIPO.

It’s a process that Apple has already been using on the last couple of generations of the best Apple Watches, specifically the Apple Watch 7 and Apple Watch 8, in order to allow for a larger display within the same footprint, and according to Gurman this tech will eventually be used for iPads as well.

It’s worth noting that while shrinking the bezels could allow for a slightly larger screen in the same space (as it has done on the Apple Watch), we’re not expecting the screen sizes to change on the iPhone 15 line, so the iPhone 15 Pro will probably be 6.1 inches, just like its predecessor, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max will likely be 6.7 inches.

What this might instead mean then is that the phones could be marginally physically smaller, and they would likely also look slightly more high-end, as they’ll have almost no perceptible bezel.

This would be just a stepping stone though, with Gurman claiming that Apple’s dream is to deliver a truly all-screen iPhone, with no bezels at all, and no cutouts for the front-facing camera and Face ID (instead they’d be hidden under the screen). It’s a dream that’s likely shared by most other smartphone manufacturers too.

Beyond the bezels

Gurman didn’t stop with talk of bezels, but the other details in his newsletter were largely things we’ve heard before.

For the Pro models, these details include a titanium frame, more rounded edges, a customizable action button in place of a mute switch, major rear camera upgrades, and a powerful new chipset.

In the case of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, Gurman points to a Dynamic Island being added in place of a notch, “major camera improvements” (which based on other leaks will likely include a new 48MP main sensor), and the inclusion of the A16 Bionic chipset currently found in the iPhone 14 Pro models.

All four phones are said to have a USB-C port, and Gurman also touches on pricing, saying to look out for “at least minor price increases” for all four models outside the US, with at least the Pro models probably getting a price increase in the US too.

As ever, we’ll take all these claims with a pinch of salt, but this is all largely in line with what we’ve heard previously, and it comes from a reputable source. We’ll know for sure soon though, as the batch of contenders for a place in our best iPhone round-up are likely to land in September.
