Apple Releases First Public Beta of macOS Ventura 13.4
Apple today released the first beta of macOS Ventura 13.4 to its public beta testing group, allowing the general public to try out the software ahead of its official launch. The macOS Ventura 13.4 public beta comes two days after Apple provided the software to developers.
Public beta testers can download the macOS 13.3 Ventura update from the Software Update section of the System Preferences app after installing the proper profile from Apple’s beta software website.
There is no word as of yet on what’s included in macOS Ventura 13.4, and no notable new features were found in the developer beta.

Trojanized Windows and Mac apps rain down on 3CX users in massive supply chain attack

Hackers working on behalf of the North Korean government have pulled off a massive supply chain attack on Windows and macOS users of 3CX, a widely used voice and video calling desktop client, researchers from multiple security firms said.
The attack compromised the software build system used to create and distribute Windows and macOS versions of the app, which provides both VoIP and PBX services to “600,000+ customers,” including American Express, Mercedes-Benz, and Price Waterhouse Cooper. Control of the software build system gave the attackers the ability to hide malware inside 3CX apps that were digitally signed using the company’s official signing key. The macOS version, according to macOS security expert Patrick Wardle, was also notarized by Apple, indicating that the company analyzed the app and detected no malicious functionality.

“This is a classic supply chain attack, designed to exploit trust relationships between an organization and external parties,” Lotem Finkelstein, Director of Threat Intelligence & Research at Check Point Software, said in an email. “This includes partnerships with vendors or the use of a third-party software which most businesses are reliant on in some way. This incident is a reminder of just how critical it is that we do our due diligence in terms of scrutinizing who we conduct business with.”

Development on iOS 16 is slowing down as Apple prepares for the upcoming June debut of iOS 17, the next-generation version of iOS.

Apple TV’s Tetris biopic loses the true plot amid its ‘80s movie tropes
The game’s amazing backstory deserves better than these Cold War movie cliches.

Henk Rogers, the man most directly responsible for bringing Tetris to the West, helped set expectations at an early press screening of Apple TV’s Tetris movie, which premieres on the streaming service Friday. “It’s not a documentary,” Rogers said of a film that casts him as a fearless hero working to extract the game from the grip of a brutal, dying ’80s Soviet bureaucracy. “Don’t expect to see that this is exactly how it happened.”
Instead, Rogers said, expect a movie that “got the feeling across, the feeling of being in Moscow for the first time, breaking the law.”
All this is immediately apparent if you’ve read books like The Tetris Effect or Tetris: The Games People Play, which lay out the actual history of the game’s long journey outside Russia with much more care and detail. Alternatively, you could hunt down a 2004 BBC documentary that also provides a more direct account of the real drama surrounding Tetris‘ complicated Soviet-era licensing drama.
Sam Bankman-Fried pleads not guilty to latest fraud, bribery charges
FTX founder and former CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (aka SBF) pleaded not guilty to five additional criminal charges this morning, according toCNBC. Prosecutors accuse the disgraced crypto exec of fraud and bribery for conspiring to send at least $40 million to Chinese government officials so they would unfreeze more than $1 billion in cryptocurrency, which he allegedly used to fund loss-generating trades.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) unsealed the third round of criminal charges against SBF in a superseding indictment; SBF has now pleaded not guilty to all 13 charges. Additionally, he faces civil charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). His attorney, Mark Cohen, claimed he would file a motion that SBF can’t be tried on charges brought after his extradition from the Bahamas in December.
Federal prosecutors allege SBF and his partners tried “numerous” legal and personal methods to unfreeze the funds before moving forward with the bribe. They say SBF directed Alameda Research, FTX’s sister company, to transfer more than $40 million to a private wallet. Of course, it’s illegal for US citizens to bribe foreign officials to generate business. The new charges ramp up pressure on the 31-year-old Bankman-Fried, who reportedly “arrived at the courthouse about an hour before the hearing, looking disheveled after an intense media scrum.”
Three former FTX executives, Caroline Ellison, Zixiao “Gary” Wang, and Nishad Singh, have pleaded guilty to fraud and conspiracy charges and have agreed to cooperate with the prosecution. There’s no word yet on the judge’s ruling about whether SBF will be forced to use a feature phone and limit internet access as part of his bail terms. Apple today added refurbished Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE 2 models to its online store in the United States, offering the latest Apple Watches at a discounted price for the first time.
The Apple Watch Series 8 is available starting at $339 for the 41mm GPS model, which is $60 off of the original price. The 45mm GPS model is priced at $359, a $70 discount off of the original price, and the total available discount goes up to $80 for the highest-end 45mm option.
The Apple Watch SE is available starting at $209 for the 40mm GPS model and $239 for the 44mm GPS model, with slightly higher prices for cellular connectivity.
Apple has a range of discounted Apple Watch Series 8 and SE 2 models for sale, in both GPS only and GPS + Cellular configurations. At the current time, Apple is only offering the aluminum Apple Watch Series 8 models, and there is no sign of a refurbished Apple Watch Ultra.
The Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE 2 models initially came out in September 2022, alongside the iPhone 14 models and the Apple Watch Ultra.
As with all refurbished products, available stock will fluctuate over time as Apple refreshes what is available, so you may need to check back often if you’re looking for a specific color or size.
