Microsoft Brings Its New AI-powered Bing To the Windows 11 Taskbar
Microsoft is releasing an update to Windows 11 today that adds the company’s new AI-powered Bing search to the taskbar. From a report: The new Windows 11 update will offer quick access to the new Bing chat feature alongside a bunch of new features. Windows 11 is also getting improvements to widgets, a better touch mode, a screen recording feature, tabs inside Notepad, and more. The new Bing integration is a surprise addition that Microsoft hasn’t been testing with its Windows Insiders. A new Bing icon will appear within the search box in the taskbar, with Microsoft highlighting the new chat answers experience in the search flyout. While chat answers won’t be available directly within the search flyout, Windows 11 users will be able to quickly start a Bing chat in Edge from here — providing they have access to the Bing preview. Microsoft is also opening up a preview of its Phone Link app for iOS, meaning iPhone users can link their devices to Windows. This will include access to send and receive messages (yes, even iMessage), calls, and notifications.

Microsoft Announces iMessage Support on Windows With Several Limitations
Microsoft today announced that it is adding iPhone support to its Phone Link app on Windows 11. The app allows iPhone users to make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, and view an iPhone’s notifications directly on a PC.
Notably, the app brings limited iMessage functionality to Windows. After pairing an iPhone with a PC via Bluetooth and granting some permissions on the iPhone, users can send and receive iMessages and SMS text messages in Phone Link, but there is no support for group chats or sending photos and videos.
As noted by The Verge’s Tom Warren, Phone Link also lacks full message history for conversations and displays all sent and received messages as gray bubbles, meaning iMessages and SMS text messages cannot be differentiated.
Microsoft says iPhone support in Phone Link will be available in preview starting this week for a “small percentage” of Windows Insider members enrolled in the Dev, Beta, or Release Preview channels. The preview will be expanded “over time.”Tags: Microsoft, iMessage, Windows

LastPass reveals exactly how it was hacked
LastPass lays out the process by which its systems were infiltrated.
LastPass has shared more details about the December data breach that shook the industry, with the attack sounding like it came straight out of a spy movie.
In a security advisory, the password manager said two incidents, seemingly unrelated, which were actually part of a larger campaign. It also said that the threat actors specifically targeted one of four DevOps engineers, further highlighting the sophistication of the entire campaign.
The LastPass investigation concluded that there were two incidents – one that was spotted in August 2022, and one that was spotted in December.
Accessing S3 buckets
The threat actors used the information obtained in the first attack, as well as information from an entirely separate cybersecurity incident, to identify the company’s encrypted cloud storage Amazon S3 buckets.
But to access the buckets, they needed decryption keys, which only four LastPass DevOps engineers possessed. So, they targeted one of them, going after a remote code execution vulnerability found in a third-party media software package installed on their private computer. This allowed them to install a keylogger which helped bypass security protections, and then some.
“The threat actor was able to capture the employee’s master password as it was entered, after the employee authenticated with MFA, and gain access to the DevOps engineer’s LastPass corporate vault,” the company explained.
“The threat actor then exported the native corporate vault entries and content of shared folders, which contained encrypted secure notes with access and decryption keys needed to access the AWS S3 LastPass production backups, other cloud-based storage resources, and some related critical database backups.”
As the attackers were using valid login information, the company’s cybersecurity team did not identify the activity as malicious. Consequently, the threat actor was lurking in the company’s storage servers for two months.
Now, post-festum, LastPass said it updated its security posture, and started rotating sensitive credentials and authentication keys and tokens. Furthermore, it regularly revokes certificates, requires extra logging and alerting, and started enforcing tougher security policies.

Namco announces the first Elden Ring expansion is in development
“Shadow of the Erdtree” promises “new adventure in the Lands Between.”
Publisher Namco Bandai has officially announced the first expansion content for Elden Ring, just over a year after the game’s initial release earned it Ars’ 2022 Game of the Year honors. “Shadow of the Erdtree” is “currently in development,” according to a tweet from the game’s official account, and promises “new adventure in the Lands Between.”
While the announcement is extremely light on details, we do get a single image of what looks like a long-haired woman on horseback, looking over a misty and wheat-filled moor with a few ruined arches poking up here and there. There’s already some rampant speculation that this figure is Miquella, the previously unseen twin of the infamous and frustratingly difficult Elden Ring boss Malenia.
Elden Ring became an immediate best-seller after its launch last February, selling 12 million copies in just 17 days, according to Namco Bandai. The publisher recently announced that the game had surpassed 20 million sales in its first year, putting it in the rarefied realm of mega-sellers like Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Grand Theft Auto series.

Jabra unveils new speakerphones targeting hybrid workers
Jabra now has a new range of speakerphones with portability in mind for the hybrid worker.
Audio specialists Jabra have launched a new range of portable speakerphones, also known as conference phones following on from its successful Speak range and designed for hybrid working.
The new Speak2 range includes Speak2 75, Speak2 55 and the Speak2 40, which the company says are “engineered for the hybrid worker who wants to hear and be heard in the most productive way….(and) designed to handle anything a busy hybrid working day throws at it.”
All three speakerphones feature full duplex audio, which helps to create the sense that all speakers are present in the same room, and come equipped with four beamforming microphones with noise cancelling technology.
Full immersion
Among the other features in the Speak2 range are Voice Level Normalisation technology, which eliminates the need to raise your voice when talking according to Jabra, and super-wideband audio.
The company also claims its new speakerphones are suitable for all workplace scenarios, such as “conference meetings, direct calls, streaming media, presentation or other.”
All the new products are designed to work with the most popular video conferencing software, and pack IP64-rated protection from dust and water in case of such situations.
When it comes to connectivity, the Speak2 40 connects via USB A or C, as it has both connector types integrated within its included cable. The Speak2 55 and 75 also have this, but can also be used wirelessly too.
The range-topping Speak2 75 has an exclusive Microphone Quality Indicator, a ring around the speaker that lights up to show how well a user’s voice is being picked up to give peace of mind that they are being heard.
It also has super-wideband audio that reveals a greater range of frequencies, thanks to the full range 65mm speaker for a “dramatically more powerful audio experience”, according to Jabra.
The Speak2 75 is also made from up to 33% sustainable materials for the mechanical parts (the 40 and 55 have more than 50%), easy connection with Microsoft Swift Pair and Google Fast Pair, and up to 32 hours of wireless battery life. The 55 has up to 12 hours, and the 40 is USB powered only with no wireless option.
Jabra says the Speak2 range will be available from the end of March 2023, and prices are: £297/€339 for the 75, £144/€169 for the 55 and £127/€149 for the 40.
