History

TechRadar was launched by Future PLC in 2008 with a team based mostly in the UK, plus a couple of overseas writers to spot breaking stories while we slept. It quickly grew to become the UK’s biggest consumer technology site, a position it still holds to this day.

It soon became time to go global, so we expanded to the US in April 2012 with a dedicated American team hired in what were then Future PLC’s San Francisco and New York City offices.

In October 2012, TechRadar launched in Australia, with the site again leveraging Future PLC’s existing presence in Sydney to hire a local team that has grown steadily in size over the following years. It is now one of the country’s leading tech sites.

We began the TechRadar Awards program in 2015, and are proud to recognize and award the companies we think are deserving of your applause each and every year. Check out our TechRadar Choice Awards 2022 page to find out about last year’s winners.

Today, the core team is still spread across the UK, US and Australia, and is known for its reliable reviews and reporting on the latest and greatest tech. TechRadar has continued to rapidly expand its global reach, and the site is now licensed in over 10 additional countries around the world, and available in 10 different languages.

We now reach up to 70 million readers a month in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Europe and beyond – we’re honored to have each and every set of eyeballs and continue to focus on what matters to all of them.

Whatever time of day it is, there’s someone, somewhere in the world, online and working on TechRadar to bring you the best in tech news, reviews, features and buying guides.

Why we care

We hand test all the tech to go beyond reviews into features, analysis and opinion too. (Image credit: TechRadar)

The team at TechRadar has been carefully selected to only include those that love the world of technology. We don’t just want to talk about it, we want to try it, to live it, to breathe in everything about it so we can give our readers the inside scoop on what actually matters.

This means that we go the extra mile when it comes to telling you what’s happening behind the scenes in our testing. We’ve published hundreds of articles from the perspective of our writers, telling you when something is great, the technology we can now no longer live without… and the stuff you simply have to avoid.

We’ll run 31 miles with four watches strapped on to see if the numbers really do add up. We’ll plug ourselves into motion capture to see how games are really made. We constantly talk to the biggest names in tech to find out what’s really going on.

And we do it because we’re just like you: gadget fans who just want to know what’s going on and getting the best out of their tech.

How we test

We pride ourselves on our independence and our rigorous review-testing process, offering up long-term attention to the products we review and making sure our reviews are constantly updated and maintained – regardless of when a device was released, if you can still buy it, it’s on our radar.

We have assembled a global team of some of the finest technology journalists on the planet, who are not only experts in their field, but are the same people we write our reviews for: those who want to know about and use the latest and best technology.

This is our promise to you:

We do not take payment for product reviews. Ever.We select products for review based on what we believe our readers want to know. We’ll tell you what we think, not what advertisers want you to hear. We say it as we see it. Our expert reviewers love technology and want you to love it too. If it’s rubbish, we’ll warn you off. If a product doesn’t meet our high standards, we’ll tell you why. We’ll test products in real life, with a minimum acceptable number of days of testing required before we write our reviews to ensure every product is thoroughly tested. If you think we’re not living up to our promise, please email the Editor-in-Chief and we’ll endeavor to put it right.

Our five star scoring system

We use a familiar five-star scoring system, in order to keep things recognizable and simple: the more stars, the better.

We rate our products on a number of criteria depending on the specific attributes of a product type, and we add a score out of 5 for each.

Why trust us?

Editorial independence

No outside party determines the products we cover, review and place in our buying guides. The content of our editorial articles remains entirely independent. Nothing that has a star rating has been paid for.

Our editorial independence is backed by the weight of one of the world’s largest technology publishers, Future PLC, which means we can tell you what we think of a product, without fear or favor.

We sometimes take trips and hospitality to attend shows and see products, in order to bring you instant coverage of the latest products. We never let it affect our judgement or response to a product, but it can sometimes be the only way we are able to bring you coverage of a new product, device or service.

While we purchase some products we review, we often use company’s loan programs. Again, we’re not going to pull any punches if the device just isn’t good enough for our readers – we always seek to make sure that the review unit we get is representative of what you’ll be able to buy, but we’re here to help you and this is often the only way to get our hands on something before it goes on sale.

We always return products at the request of the brand or at the end of the agreed loan period.

Ted Lasso season 3 trailer

The official trailer for Ted Lasso season 3 made its debut on February 27 – but, if anything, it only left us with more questions than answers.

How so? Given the secrecy around the show’s third (and potentially final) season, it’s akin to a teaser trailer, rather than anything substantial.

Still, there are bits and pieces we can glean from the latest footage. It seems AFC Richmond are set for multiple stern tests after their promotion back to the English top flight, while all doesn’t seem well between Nate and West Ham owner Rupert Mannion. There’s plenty of humor and optimism within the near two-minute teaser, though, that suggests there could be some light at the end of the tunnel for all (well, nearly everyone) concerned.

Missed the first season 3 teaser, which also arrived in February? Check it out below:

Ted Lasso season 3 cast

Here’s Ted Lasso season 3’s confirmed main cast list:

Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso
Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton
Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard
Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent
Juno Temple as Keeley Jones
Nick Mohammed as Nate Shelley
Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins
Phil Dunster as Jamie Tartt
Toheeb Jimoh as Sam Obisanya
Cristo Fernandez as Dani Rojas
James Lance as Trent Crimm
Sarah Niles as Sharon Fieldstone
Anthony Head as Rupert Mannion

Prominent supporting cast members have also returned, including Kola Bokinni as Isaac McAdoo, David Elsendoorn as Jan Maas, Billy Harris as Colin Hughes, and Annette Badland as pub landlord Mae. Meanwhile, Apple CEO Tim Cook seems likely to cameo, given he’s seen celebrating a Richmond goal on his Twitter account. Match of the Day host Gary Lineker, soccer pundits Thierry Henry and Chris Powell, and commentator Arlo White will return in cameo capacities.

We also know the identity of three actors who have joined Ted Lasso’s ranks. Per Deadline, Jodi Balfour (For All Mankind) has signed on as a charming venture capitalist called Jack. Above the Line suggests Becky Ann Baker (Freaks and Geeks) has been cast as Ted’s mom, too. Lastly, Maximilian Osinski (Agents of SHIELD) joins the team as Zava, a Zlatan Ibrahimovic-inspired striker with incredible talent and a huge ego to boot.

Ted Lasso season 3 story

Major spoilers for Ted Lasso season 2 follow.

Here’s the plot synopsis for Ted Lasso season 3: “Newly-promoted AFC Richmond faces ridicule as media predictions widely peg them as last in the Premier League and Nate (Nick Mohammed), now hailed as the ‘wonder kid’, has gone to work for Rupert (Anthony Head) at West Ham United.

“In the wake of Nate’s contentious departure from Richmond, Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) steps up as assistant coach, alongside Beard (Brendan Hunt). Meanwhile, while Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deals with pressures at work, he continues to wrestle with his own personal issues back home, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) is focused on defeating Rupert, and Keeley (Juno Temple) navigates being the boss of her own PR agency. Things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch, but Team Lasso is set to give it their best shot anyway.”

Ted Lasso season 3 sees AFC Richmond return to the big time. (Image credit: Apple TV Plus)

AFC Richmond’s Premier League return, then, is expected to be as dramatic as we’d thought.

After securing promotion on the final day of last season, Richmond are back in the big time, but it won’t be easy for them to try and secure an unprecedented Leicester City-level title triumph. 19 other clubs stand in their way, including Manchester City, who relegated Richmond in their final top-flight match in season 1 and thrashed them 5-0 in season 2’s FA Cup semi-final. So we’re hoping that Richmond will finally get one over one of their biggest rivals.

City won’t be the only rival Richmond has to contend with. In the season 2 finale, Nate, Ted’s former prodigy, joined West Ham as their new manager. His appointment comes after Rebecca’s former husband – Rupert Mannion – bought the Premier League outfit.

So Ted Lasso season 3 will pit the master versus his apprentice. Taking to Twitter after season 2’s last episode, actor Nick Mohammed posted a 12-point document that reveals why Nate departed Richmond for their London rivals:

Me again! CONTAINS SPOILERS so maybe don’t read until you’ve watched the season finale, but here are a few thoughts on Nate and responses to your tweets! X #TedLasso PS Also, huge shoutout to the magnificent @joekellyjk47 who cowrote this episode with Jason ⚽️ pic.twitter.com/Z1Rvuok422October 8, 2021

Hopefully, Ted Lasso season 3 will deliver a titanic clash between Richmond and West Ham, which will put Ted and Nate at odds on the pitch. As much as we can’t wait to see if Richmond will beat Manchester City, we’re also eager to see Ted and Nate clash, from a tactical standpoint, from the dugout. Co-writer Brendan Hunt has teased that we’ll “see a bit of what’s going on at West Ham” in the next season, too (per The Hollywood Reporter (THR)).

Speaking to the BBC, Mohammed said: “I’m effectively the villain in it now, which is a funny place to find myself. The thing with Ted Lasso is the audience are possibly expecting a redemption arc for Nate, and I’d like to see one I think because that would be nice. But equally I could well imagine the writers thinking: ‘no, we’re going to turn it on its head’, because that’s what they did in season 2, playing against everyone’s expectations, so he might be the one character they don’t redeem.”

Whatever happens, Mohammed thinks a verbal showdown is on the way between Ted and Nate. “There has to be some kind of reckoning, right?” he told US Weekly. “Whether it’s a positive or negative outcome [we’ll have to see].”

Nate has turned to the dark side. Or, rather, he’s not part of Team Lasso anymore. (Image credit: Apple TV Plus)

Away from the pitch, Ted Lasso season 3 needs to wrap up smaller storylines, such as Rebecca and Sam’s on-off relationship. The pair were no longer dating by the season 2 finale, but we imagine this isn’t the end of their romantic dalliance. Hannah Waddingham, who plays Rebecca, seems to hint that there may be more to mine, plot wise, here when speaking to Deadline. Additionally, in a separate Deadline article, Waddingham revealed how Rebecca’s personal and professional lives will be at two vastly different points when season 3 begins.

Speaking of relationship issues, Roy and Keeley might have hit a rough patch. Keeley rejected Roy’s efforts to take her on a much-needed vacation in season 2’s last episode, electing to stay in the UK and work on her newly-formed PR firm.

It’s unclear what the future holds for them, but love will be in the air for another Richmond-based individual: Colin Hughes. Chatting to Deadline, Billy Harris teased a love-filled subplot for the center midfielder. Here’s hoping someone gets a happy ending, then!

From Ted’s perspective, his panic attacks or familial issues haven’t fully gone away, either, based on season 3’s story synopsis. Sports psychologist Sharon had seemingly helped him to get to grips with them by the end of season 2, but will they return? Regardless of whether they do or not, expect Ted to continue his therapy sessions with Sharon.

We wouldn’t be surprised if Ted offers Trent Crimm a role at Richmond, too. In the season 2 finale, Trent was fired by The Independent for revealing who leaked Ted’s panic attacks (i.e. Nate). Ted could use Trent’s expertise in a media capacity, so why not hire him? It would mean that all of the series’ main characters are under one roof (Nate aside), which would be a fitting way to bring the curtain down on the show.

Will we get closure on all of the above? Who knows, but Lawrence promises viewers could’ve worked out many of the series’ surprises from the beginning.

“There will be lots of surprises,” he told Deadline. “But anyone who says, oh, where Nate ends up in the finale is a big surprise…we felt like we were setting that up from the very first episode of last year. The clues are there. Jason and I are huge non-spoiler people, but yeah, I think some of the writing is already on the wall, hopefully.”

Lawrence’s comments have been backed up by Declan Lowney, Ted Lasso director and producer, who told Deadline that we should expect “a bunch of surprises, things you didn’t see coming, some curveballs in there”. Cristo Fernandez also told People that each character will get “different resolutions, different moments” in season 3.

Plot wise, one thing is for certain: only one ending has been shot. Speaking to Deadline, actor-executive producer Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard, denied that multiple season 3 endings had been filmed to stop spoilers leaking out. However Ted Lasso ends (more on this in the section below), don’t believe anyone who says a different (and potentially better) ending could have been used instead.

Expect as much off-field drama as on it in Ted Lasso‘s third season. (Image credit: Apple TV Plus)

Elsewhere, The Athletic reported Apple has agreed a £500,000 (around $682,000) deal with English top flight executives to use licensed kits, club badges, and the Premier League trophy. Could we see AFC Richmond lift the title in a fairy tale-style series ending?

Meanwhile, AFC Richmond’s first team might take a trip to Europe as part of a team bonding session. Ted Lasso fan Kelly Melissa took to Twitter to post an image of herself with Sudeikis and Waddingham in Amsterdam, so maybe the Richmond boys are going on a European tour. According to Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie, we can expect to see a lot more soccer played in Ted Lasso season 3 (via The Los Angeles Times). For a show based around the hugely popular sport, you can never have enough soccer-based action.

Finally, speaking to TVLine, Brendan Hunt suggested that season 3 will kick off (see what we did there?) at the beginning of a new season. “We don’t like to do the same thing twice,” Hunt explained. “In season 1, we joined the [Premier League] season in January. In season 2, we joined the season in late September. We’ve never gone from the start of a season, so perhaps that’s something we want to get to.”

Ted Lasso season 3: is this the final season?

It may be time to say goodbye to Ted, Nate, and company. (Image credit: Apple TV Plus)

It depends who you ask. Sudeikis has continually stated Ted Lasso is a trilogy, so we should prepare ourselves for the end, doubling down on season 3 being written as the series’ final entry in a chat with ET Online. Co-writer Brett Goldstein added further weight those claims (per Mr. Porter), saying Ted Lasso as always viewed as a three-season show.

However, other cast and crew members aren’t so sure. Actor Phil Dunster told THR that “nobody knows about season four”, while Nick Mohammed said (via Entertainment Weekly) that “there’s no reason why it couldn’t continue. So, we’ll see. I hope there’s more, but who knows.”

Co-creator Bill Lawrence has also teased the prospect of returning for more, telling Deadline there are ways of stretching Ted Lasso out for another two seasons.

And is there the potential for new tales to be told in the Ted Lasso universe? Speaking to THR, Lawrence answered: “When we started, we plotted out everybody’s beginning, middle and end of a three-season arc. This story is going to be over next year, regardless, even if the show finds another story to tell and goes on.” Elaborating on the prospect of spin-offs, Hunt also told THR: “It’s just a matter of whether or not we pick this up in some other way”.

Additionally, Waddingham jokingly told Entertainment Tonight that she wants Apple to force Sudeikis to continue making more seasons: “If I were Apple and Warner Bros, I’d be leaning on him [Sudeikis] like a lunatic and putting him in a corner in a little cage and giving him a notebook and a pen. It’s too beautiful.”

Warner Bros. are open to continuing the series in some guise, with Head of Television Channing Dungey saying (via THR): “The way they pitched out the season, it would work very well should [season three] be the end. Audiences will be satisfied with how they resolve the end of the season. But there is still an opportunity and path for us to do more. We will see how everything comes together; there are a lot of moving pieces here and there’s a continued enthusiasm to keep telling these stories.”

If Ted Lasso sticks around for longer, we could certainly use more of the show’s wonderful positivity. In the vein of the show’s iconic single-word phrase – “Believe” – we’re holding out hope that Ted Lasso will continue after season 3. Still, if this is the end of the line, at least we can see (and play as) Ted and Richmond in FIFA 23.

The Witcher season 3: everything we know so far

Here’s everything we know about The Witcher season 3 on Netflix.

The Witcher season 3: key information

– Releasing in mid-2023
– Showrunner might have leaked launch month
– Could be split into two parts
– All major characters set to return
– Plot based on The Time of Contempt book
– Blood Origin spin-off sets up season 3 plot
– Will feature never-before-seen monsters and story threads
– Season 4 greenlit
– Henry Cavill not returning after season 3

It’s all gone very quiet on The Witcher season 3 front. The hit Netflix series is currently slated to arrive in mid-2023 but, particularly in the last few months, there’s been little to no new updates on when it’ll actually arrive.

Of course, one of the best Netflix shows hasn’t been unceremoniously cancelled. However, with the backlash that The Witcher live-action universe has received in recent months, it’s not surprising that the cast and crew are keeping their heads down until Netflix confirms an official launch date.

Regardless, there’s been plenty of chatter about The Witcher’s third season since its predecessor ended. Below, we’ve rounded up everything worth knowing about the fantasy show’s next entry, including its new and returning cast members, plot points that need addressing, its potential release date, the series’ future, and more.

Full spoilers follow for The Witcher season 2 and The Witcher: Blood Origin. Potential spoilers for season 3 and Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels are also discussed.

The Witcher season 3 release date: what we know

The Witcher season 3 is still slated to arrive in mid-2023. (Image credit: Jay Maidment/Netflix)

The Witcher season 3 doesn’t have an official release date, but a mid-2023 release window has been revealed. Right now, it seems the third season is still on track to meet that release window, but that’s because we haven’t heard anything to the contrary.

The Time of Contempt is nigh. 👀The Witcher returns to Netflix in Summer 2023 #TUDUM pic.twitter.com/MUzOKXwFjVSeptember 24, 2022

Mid-2023 means it could launch anytime between May and September. Even then, we might only get half of the episodes. Showrunner Lauren S Hissrich told Collider that Netflix “wouldn’t rule” splitting the third season into two parts. If The Witcher season 3’s second half needs more development time, we could see it released in two volumes.

Interestingly, in the same article, Hissrich appeared to let an official launch month slip, saying: “We have a way still [to go], a very long time, eight-ish months or so until The Witcher season 3 comes out”. Collider’s article went live in December 2022, so that “eight-ish months” comment would put season 3 coming out in August 2023.

Wilson Mbomio as Dara
Bart Edwards as Duny/Emperor Emhyr, aka The White Flame of Nilfgaard
Meng’er Zhang as Milva
Robbie Amell as Gallatin
Hugh Skinner as Prince Radovid
Christelle Elwin as Mistelle

Many of the above have featured heavily in the show, but those who haven’t should see their roles expanded.

Emperor Emhyr is one of the latter. The season 2 finale revealed Duny – the knight Geralt saved in season 1 and who is also Ciri’s father – is not only still alive, but he’s the leader (aka The White Flame) of Nilfgaard’s forces. And he wants to be reunited with Ciri, so he can use her abilities for nefarious means.

Philippa Einhart featured fleetingly in season 2 but, based on what we know of her book counterpart, she has a bigger role to play. That extends to King Vizimir and Sigismund Dijkstra, too, with the kingdom of Redania becoming more prominent as the plot in the books unfolds.

Other season 2 newcomers, including Adjoa Andoh’s Nenneke, Simon Callow’s Codringher, Liz Carr’s Fenn, Kaine Zajaz’s Gage and Sam Hazeldine’s Eredin/King of the Wild Hunt, might be back, too. Until Netflix confirms they’ll appear, though, we’ve left them off the list.

Meanwhile, four actors were officially added to the ever-expanding roster in April 2022. They include Shang-Chi‘s Meng’er Zhang and Upload‘s Robbie Amell, and you can read more about them in our Witcher season 3 cast update explainer.

Potential season 3 cast spoilers follow.

Redanian Intelligence has claimed 10 other actors – two in one article, six in another, and two more in separate news stories – have been cast. Netflix hasn’t confirmed these hires, but we’ve listed them below as their characters may interest diehard fans:

Stuart Thompson as Fabio Sachs
Jim Sturgeon as Applegatt, a royal messenger of King Demavend of Aedirn
Ryan Hayes as Artaud Terranova, a mage who participates in the Thanedd Coup
Josh Weller as Valdo Marx, a bard rival of Joey Batey’s Jaskier
Kate Winter as Putney
Martyn Ellis as Barker
Michalina Olszanska as TBC
Sean Cernow as TBC
Harvey Quinn as TBC
Poppy Almond as TBC

Another Redanian Intelligence leak claims The Rings of Power season 1‘s Fabian McCallum will play Kayleigh, a member of the teenage misfit gang known as The Rats. Redanian Intelligence also suggests Hiftu Quasem (Killing Eve) has joined the cast as iconic character Falka.

Kim Bodnia’s Vesemir and other Witchers including Coën (Yasen Atour) and Lambert (Paul Bullion) might not be back. That’s based on Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri leaving Kaer Morhen in the season 2 finale. Unless Geralt and company return, Vesemir and his crew aren’t likely to feature. Netflix’s Witcher series has diverged slightly from its source material, however, so we could see them in season 3.

Two actors who definitely aren’t returning are Blair Kincaid and Chris Fulton, who played Crach an Craite in season 1 and Rience in season 2. Redanian Intelligence says Fulton has been replaced by Sam Woolf (The Crown, Humans). Vikings Valhalla star Johannes Haukur Johannesson has reportedly been cast as Crach for season 3 (via Redanian Intelligence).

Elsewhere, two Blood Origin actors – Minnie Driver and Samuel Blenkin – could appear in the main show. Driver’s Seanchai is a shape-shifting time traveler, so she might show up. Meanwhile, Blenkin’s Avallac’h was revealed as the individual Ciri spots in that doorway in the first season. Avallac’h appears in the final two books but, given Netflix’s live-action adaptation has played loose and fast with the novels before, he could be shoehorned into The Witcher season 3.

Finally, according to Redanian Intelligence, a new villain known as The Professor, may play a supporting role. Redanian Intelligence also claims that Safiyya Ingar (Summer of Rockets, Faith) has been cast in an undisclosed role.

The Witcher season 3 plot

Major spoilers follow for The Witcher TV series and the novels.

Little is known about The Witcher season 3’s plot, but Netflix has released a brief plot synopsis:

In December 2021, Hissrich told TechRadar that The Witcher season 3 will be based on the second main novel – i.e. The Time of Contempt, so maybe we’ll see less in the way of plot diversions.

Or will we? Chatting with Collider, Hissrich said she wanted to follow the books more closely, but this season will incorporate plot points from others in the series. She also told Collider that a “big story from Blood of Elves”, the first novel in The Witcher saga, will be part of the overarching narrative. Meanwhile, VFX supervisor Sébastien Francoeur and producer Graeme Marshall revealed (via ScreenRant) that season 3 will include things that nobody has ” read or seen before in Witcher lore”. It sounds, then, that the show’s next installment will continue to deviate from its source material.

Elsewhere, The Wild Hunt won’t feature heavily – Hissrich telling Entertainment Weekly (EW): “We all know that, eventually, Geralt is going to learn a little bit more about the Wild Hunt, as will Ciri, but right now it stays this ever-looming threat to her. One of the things that I love in the books that Sapkowski did beautifully is he teases the Wild Hunt for so long. They pop up, then they go away for a while. So we are definitely sticking to that school.”

Potential plot spoilers follow from now on.

There are only two major Blood of Elves book-based storylines not included in season 2. The first concerns the Scoia’tael, a group of non-human guerillas who fight for Nilfgaard and attack Geralt, Ciri, Triss, and Yarpen Zigrin’s dwarven contingent. Hissrich has confirmed the Scoia’tael will appear of season 3.

The second is far more important. It relates to Geralt telling Ciri about the roses of Aelirenn, an elf who led the last band of their kin against an invading human army. Aelirenn’s forces were massacred by their foes and, given that only young elves can produce offspring, the demise of Aelirenn’s forces inadvertently led to the elves’ slow march towards extinction. Expect this to tie back into events concerning Francesca and her murdered elven baby in season 2.

Speaking of maternal relationships, Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer, wants to see more of the dynamic between her character and Ciri from the novels. Talking to Glamour, Chalotra said: “[I want to see] everything that happens in the book where she gets to develop a mother-daughter relationship with Ciri. She also calms down a bit and she realizes she is enough.”

What catchy tune will Jaskier have for us in The Witcher season 3? (Image credit: Susie Allnett/Netflix)

In terms of Sapkowski’s version of The Time of Contempt, what can we expect from The Witcher season 3?

Redanian Intelligence says the thrilling battle between Geralt and Vilgefortz has been included. The same website claims Ciri will be involved in two other moments pulled straight from the books – the first involving Wyverns, which might see her rescue Fabio Sachs, while the second sees her lost in the Korath Desert. Longtime fans will know all about the importance of this latter sequence.

Redanian Intelligence also suggests we’ll see two other major events play out in The Witcher season 3 – an elegant ball attended by numerous mages (and Geralt), and the Thanedd Coup, which sees mages loyal to Nilfgaard and the North clash in a bloody battle that costs many lives. This ties into the Geralt and Vilgefortz fight we mentioned above.

Away from the action, Jaskier could become as popular with the ladies (and guys) as Geralt is. Actor Joey Batey told Total Film: “Jaskier gets a little bit of a love interest – maybe more than one.”

The Witcher season 3: future seasons and spin-offs

Netflix renewed The Witcher for a fourth season in October 2022. However, Redanian Intelligence says writing has begun on seasons 4 and 5, so we could get two more seasons. Previously, Hissrich told Collider she’s mapped out a seven-season arc, but her plan depends on whether people continue to watch the show.

Coercing fans to do so will be harder without Henry Cavill, who isn’t returning after The Witcher season 3. Announced alongside the season 4 renewal, Netflix revealed Liam Hemsworth will take over once this season has aired. No official reason has been given about Cavill’s departure, but Redanian Intelligence suggests Cavill didn’t agree with the show’s creative decisions.

Speaking to TechRadar, Hissrich said she “fully understands” fans’ ire over Cavill leaving, but hoped they would continue watching. Elaborating to EW, Hissrich said Cavill’s Geralt will get a “heroic sendoff”, before confirming to NME that she’ll talk more about the situation post-season 3.

Spin-off wise, The Witcher: Blood Origin prequel series covered the story of the first Witcher’s creation and finally introduced audiences to key character Avallac’h. Blood Origin also followed events leading up to and during the Conjunction of the Spheres, the cataclysm that results in the collision of multiple universes and their human, elven, and monstrous races. Meanwhile, Minnie Driver wants Seanchai to cross over into the main series and hang out with Geralt.

Other spin-offs currently in development include a family-friendly animated series and a second anime movie. Meanwhile, Redanian Intelligence claims a a spin-off involving other Witchers could be in the works, while another Redanian Intelligence article suggests a spin-off of The Rats will start filming later this year.

Arcane season 2: everything we know so far

Here’s everything you need to know about Arcane season 2 on Netflix.

Arcane season 2: key information

– No release date set yet
– Expected to launch this year
– Three key cast members returning
– Story should pick up straight after season 1 finale
– Creators tease character arcs and plot details for season 2
– Showrunners looking for new music collaborators
– Fans concerned that season 2 could end Vi and Jinx’s story
– Future seasons likely on the way

When will Arcane season 2 finally grace our screens? It’s a good question, but one we don’t have an answer for yet.

You see, Riot Games, Netflix, and Fortiche Productions are still hard at work making the hit animated series’ next installment. We’re hoping it’ll arrive sometime this year, but there’s every chance that one of the best Netflix shows of recent years may not launch until 2024. Sad faces all around.

Still, there’s plenty of reading for you to do in the interim. Below, you’ll find every piece of important news on Arcane‘s second season, including its story threads, returning cast members, potential launch date, and more

Major spoilers follow for Arcane‘s first season. Potential spoilers for Arcane season 2 are also discussed.

Arcane season 2 release date: what we know

Arcane season 2 still doesn’t have a release date, even though it was greenlit in November 2021.

Given it’s been in development for 18 months (publicly, at least), it should be with us soon, right? According to Riot Games CEO Nicolo Laurent, it was never going to arrive in 2022, but that also doesn’t mean it’ll launch in 2023, either:

So yeah, we are working on #arcane season 2. The good news: you won’t have to wait for 6 years (the time it took us to making season 1)The bad news: it’s not coming in 2022 😢 https://t.co/IQoPyLnw1JNovember 21, 2021

The fifth episode of Bridging the Rift – a YouTube series detailing the first season’s development – seemingly revealed development was nearing its end point. Meanwhile, in November 2022, co-showrunner Christian Linke confirmed (via Reddit) that scripts had been completed, but some had undergone rewrites, based on their story boards and voice actors’ work.

In February, Linke teased more about season 2’s development. Taking to Twitter, Linke asked his followers to provide him with suggestions for music artists, whose songs he’d like to use – licensed, of course – in the show’s next outing. If Arcane‘s executive team is searching for music to include in specific scenes, that means development might be approaching its endpoint.

So, when will Arcane season 2 arrive? Not until late 2023 at the very earliest, in our opinion. There’s lots of work still left to do by the sounds of it. We’re happy to wait if it means Arcane‘s next season is as good as (or even better) than its first, too.

Arcane season 2 plot

Vi will deliver more knock-out blows in Arcane‘s second season. (Image credit: Netflix/Riot Games)

Full spoilers follow for Arcane season 1.

If you’ve seen Arcane‘s season 1 finale, you’ll know Jinx fired a crystal rocket at Piltover’s council chamber, with many main and supporting characters trapped inside. Those present when the rocket exploded included Jayce, Mel, Viktor, Cassandra, Hoskel, Bolbok, Shoola, and Salo.

We don’t expect everyone to have survived the blast, either. At the very least, we think Mel and Cassandra will perish or be severely injured. On Reddit, fans suspect that’ll be the case, too, with some suggesting an animation frame from season 2 – glimpsed in Bridging the Rift episode 3 – might have revealed Cassandra dies. It would be odd for Riot and Fortiche to ruin this potential story beat pre-release, but maybe it was intentional to see if anyone picked up on it. The frame doesn’t look like it’s from season 1 so, unless it’s a deleted scene from that season, this may be our first look at Arcane season 2.

If Mel and Cassandra die in the explosion, it would give Jayce and Caitlyn a major incentive to pursue Jinx. You know, seeing as they’re Jayce’s partner and Caitlyn’s mother. That could lead Jayce to walk back on his promise to give Zaun its independence from Piltover, especially now that Jinx – a Zaun citizen – carried out the attack.

Honored doesn’t even begin to describe how we feel about winning the #Emmy for 𝑶𝒖𝒕𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒏𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑷𝒓𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒎.Thank you to our incredible team at @RiotGames and Fortiche, the @TelevisionAcad, and the greatest fans (yes, you) for making this possible. pic.twitter.com/xFNWt4eNc7September 4, 2022

Additionally, Caitlyn may be out for revenge if her mother was hurt or killed, which would put her at odds with Vi, whom Caitlyn is close with. The latter is Jinx’s sister, so Vi will likely be caught in a difficult situation: help Caitlyn and Jayce to bring her sister to justice, or try to save Jinx from herself. The latter would put her in opposition with the other two, though, so she’s got a lot of thinking to do if we’re right in our assumptions on all of the above.

That isn’t the only thing that could divide Caitlyn and Vi once more. Responding to a fan on Twitter about whether Caitlyn knows Vi and her gang blew up Jayce’s lab in season 1’s opening act, Arcane writer Amanda Overton revealed that wasn’t the case. So, will Caitlyn learn the truth in season 2? Place your bets now.

Speaking at the 2022 BAFTAs (per The Digital Fix), showrunner Alex Yee said fans “will be happy” with the progression of Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship either way, adding: “The way in which we wanted to roll that story out has always been sort of determined. What you will see in season 2 will be part of the big picture that we’ve had all along.”

Expect the brewing war between Piltover and Zaun to take center stage in Arcane season 2, too. Tensions were already simmering between the nations last time out, so we wouldn’t be surprised if a full-blown conflict begins due to Jinx’s actions. During a Reddit AMA, co-creator Christian Linke summed up this season’s overarching narrative with the word “war”, so it sounds like we could be right on the money. That’ll include another showdown between Jinx and Ekko as well, according to Linke.

Additionally, Yee teased (via Netflix Queue) how the battle lines have been drawn heading into the next chapter, saying: “We ended season 1 by really pushing a lot of the characters in the show as far as we could from each other. Figuring out how to deal with this puzzle, where all the pieces have now been split up and tossed to the four winds, is going to be the main thrust of season 2.”

We also expect to see Heimerdinger and Ekko collaborate further to help the undercity in Arcane season 2. With the former voted off Piltover’s council in episode 7, he bumped into an injured Ekko on the streets of Zaun in episode 8. The pair bonded over their shared affinity of technology and, after Heimerdinger helps Ekko to return home, the duo decide to work together to ease Zaun’s suffering.

We’ll also see whether Viktor will lose himself completely to his Hextech research. He’s already inadvertently murdered his childhood friend Sky thanks to his Hexcore studies, and it appears that he’ll walk a darker path in the show’s sophomore year. If we know anything about League of Legends (LoL) lore, we could see Viktor use Hextech to cybernetically enhance his body further and become the champion that diehard LoL fans know him to be.

There could also be room for some flashback sequences involving deceased characters. Responding to a Reddit fan’s question about whether we’ll see Silco and Vander’s friendship pre-betrayal, Linke said “you will, in fact“. Currently, it’s unclear if this’ll be part of Arcane season 2 or a future instalment.

Elaborating on what we can expect from various characters’ journeys next time out, Linke told the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science’s YouTube channel: “Season 2 was always this thing that made us think ‘let’s take them further and explore the corner of their pysche and identities we haven’t seen’. The challenge was to go to places where they’ve never been to. I’m excited about what we’re doing in that regard. I also hope it makes every League [of Legends] player proud and every animation or fantasy nerd excited about our characters.”

In a bid to drum up excitement for season 2 (not that it needs it), Kevin Alejandro, who plays Jayce, said fans will be “on the edge of their seats” (per Buzzfeed), adding: “You’re going to be conflicted in such a way that I don’t know if it’s good or bad. Like, your emotions will be pulled out of you and you’ll be like ‘Oh my god!’ That’s how you’re going to end [season 2]. It’s so good!”

However, Arcane season 2 might spell the end of our exploration of this area of Runeterra – the world in which the series is set. In Bridging the Rift episode 5, Riot Games co-founder Brandon Beck confirmed the show’s creative team would look to explore more of Runeterra’s regions and introduce new LoL heroes in subsequent seasons. Many fans took this to mean Vi and Jinx’s story will end with Arcane‘s second season. Without clarification from Riot, that rumor will run for a while yet.

Arcane season 2 cast

Who will return in Arcane season 2? (Image credit: Netflix)

Only three Arcane season 2 characters have been confirmed so far:

Hailee Steinfeld as Vi
Ella Purnell as Jinx
Katie Leung as Caitlyn

If you’ve watched the season 2 announcement video in our release date section, you’ll have heard the trio’s voices. Given that they watched on during that explosive season 1 finale, they were safe from Jinx’s attack.

Determining who else will return depends on who survives the Piltover council chamber attack. We think that Mel and/or Cassandra could be casualties of Jinx’s strike, while any of the other council members could die or be severely injured. We expect Jayce to survive, though, as he has a bigger role to play and will seek vengeance on Jinx.

Additionally, Ekko and Heimerdinger should be back. The duo weren’t part of the council chamber attack, so they’ll return and we’ll see how their character arcs progress in Arcane’s second season. Viktor will show up, even though he was in the council chamber at the time of Jinx’s attack.

There are likely to be new faces introduced in Arcane season 2, too. There were plenty of deaths in the show’s first outing – Silco, Vander, and Marcus to name three – so new supporting characters will be required to fill the void. We have no idea who might show up, but there are lots of LoL heroes and villains that Riot, Netflix, and Fortiche can pull from the game franchise’s universe and use for the animated series.

To tide fans over until Arcane season 2, Riot Games released a YouTube series – Bridging the Rift – in late 2022 that explores the first season’s lengthy development:

Episode 2 – Persistence (Or When Your Best Still Sucks)
Episode 3 – Killstreaks Meets Keyframes
Episode 4 – Musical Misfits
Episode 5 – We Gave It Our Best Shot

Arcane season 2 trailer: is there one?

No, and it’ll be a while before we get one. We’ll update this section when one is released.

Will Arcane get more seasons?

Ekko could have a big role to play in Arcane‘s second season. (Image credit: Netflix)

Yes. In Bridging the Rift episode 2, Riot CEO Nicolo Laurent revealed he’s told co-showrunner Christian Linke that Riot’s executive team had signed off on “multiple seasons”. Laurent had previously suggested this in a Riot Games blog post, writing “there will be Arcane season 2 (+?)”.

Of course, multiple seasons could theoretically mean Arcane seasons 1 and 2. However, it would be odd to use the word “multiple” to describe two seasons when “a couple” would’ve sufficed, so we’re confident it’ll get more than two seasons.

Given its popularity, it’s easy to see why that would be the case. Arcane season 1 – read our season 1 cast and crew interview feature while you’re here – holds a 100% certified fresh rating on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes among critics, while it also has a 96% rating based on over 5,000-plus audience reviews.

Additionally, there’s plenty of story left to tell, character arcs to tie up, and new individuals and champions to introduce. Arcane, then, will never be short of ideas from plot or character development perspectives. We’re also big fans of Fortiche’s visuals for the animated series, so we’d be happy to see many more installments.

Titanfall 2

Respawn may be busy with Apex Legends these days, but you can thank the Titanfall franchise for the former’s slick sliding, fast combat, and vertical manoeuvres. Titanfall 2 was an acclaimed sequel with a single-player campaign worth buying the game for alone, even before you get to incredible multiplayer action, with humanoid avatars massively punching above their weight against (and inside) the lumbering mechs Titanfall is known for. Not one to miss.

Monster Energy Supercross

Not quite as big a name as Titanfall, but Monster Energy Supercross offers fast and nimble action of its own in this BMX race simulator, with a track editor to craft and mould your own routes to bike around. And yes, that’s Monster Energy as in the energy drink.

PlayStation Plus games: November 2019

Nioh

This samurai action game has more than a touch of Dark Souls about it, which is no bad thing – but its in-depth combat system and stunningly realised medieval setting also make it very much its own beast. A return to form for Team Ninja, and a game that we now know is getting a Nioh 2 sequel in March 2020. Perfect time then to practise your swordsman skills.

Outlast 2

‘Tis the season to be scary, and Outlast 2 should help get you in the Halloween spirit. It’s more a spiritual successor than a direct sequel to 2013’s Outlast, but again puts you in the shoes of a journalist who gets caught up in the murders they’re trying to investigate. Cue camcorder footage, terrifying chase sequences and an all-around horror experience.

The Last of Us Remastered

It couldn’t be a better time to drop The Last of Us Remastered through PS Plus, with the highly anticipated sequel to the dramatic zombie game, The Last of Us Part 2, coming in February 2020 – but with masterful storytelling and truly gripping emotional stakes, the original game is very much worth visiting alone.

The remastered version updates the PS3 game with enhanced graphics, and includes the Left Behind DLC that delves into Ellie’s life before the start of main story.

MLB The Show 19

If you’re keener on swinging baseball bats into actual baseballs – rather than, you know, skulls of the undead – MLB The Show 19 is the sports simulator you need. Players who try out the game in October will get some free in-game content, to boot, while legendary player Ted Williams is also being added to the game this month.

Both games are available until November 4.

PlayStation Plus games: September 2019

Batman: Arkham Knight

It’s time to suit up as the caped crusader. Rocksteady’s Arkham Knight is leading this month’s PS Plus offering, and it’s one that you’ll definitely not want to miss.

The fourth main instalment in the Arkham game series, Arkham Knight sees you going toe-to-toe with some of DC’s most infamous villains including Scarecrow, Joker and Deathstroke. It’s worth picking up just for the sheer enjoyment of skidding around Arkham in the Batmobile – you know, if you’re not in the ‘saving the world’ thing.

Darksiders 3

Another dark offering from PS Plus this month, Darksiders 3 is a hack and slash action-adventure from Gunfire Games. If you like Metroidvania games then this is definitely one for you but don’t expect an easy ride.

PlayStation Plus games: July 2019

Detroit: Become Human

Quantum Dream has a reputation for narrative-heavy games with weighty choices, and Detroit: Become Human is no less ambitious than you’d expect. Following three separate character paths in a world with an underclass of androids, it’s a game that makes big statements about power, autonomy, and the civil rights movement.

Even if Detroit can’t always carry the weight of these themes, there’s a lot at work here – and, for some, getting to experience more of David Cage’s work will be enough.

Horizon Chase Turbo

If you grew up on the fast-paced, ‘one-more-go’ arcade racers of the ’80s and ’90s, chances are you’re going to love Horizon Chase Turbo. Modelled on classic racers like Outrun, Top Gear and Rush, Horizon Chase Turbo aims to send a nitrous burst of nostalgia right into the hearts of every kid who ever spent their afternoons pumping coins into arcade machines and an effort to chase that all-important ‘high score’.

PlayStation Plus games: June 2019

Borderlands: The Handsome Jack Collection

With Borderlands 3 right around the corner, there’s no better time to jump back into the franchise with Borderalnds: The Handsome Jack Collection. It’s a compilation of two games – The Presequel and Borderlands 2 – and sets the stage for the third entry in the series that’s coming later this year.

On top of both base games, you’ll get all the DLC released for Borderlands 2, plus exclusive skins and challenge arenas for The Presequel.

Considering it’s absolutely free right now, it’s a darn good deal.

Sonic Mania

For years, all gamers wanted was a basic remake of the original Sonic The Hedgehog games. They didn’t want fancy graphics, or boatloads of new characters, just the game they grew up with on modern consoles. Sonic Mania is the direct result of fans’ desires.

That said, Sonic Mania is really both a compilation of original levels and a spiritual successor to the Sega Genesis games – you’ll play as either Sonic, Tails or Knuckles and cruise through levels at high velocity. At the end of zones, you’ll take on Dr. Robotnik in one of his mechanical monstrosities, and do your best to clear bonus stages in between missions.

If you need a giant fix of nostalgia, Sonic Mania can dish it out in spades.

PlayStation Plus games: May 2019

Overcooked

Overcooked is undoubtedly one of the best couch co-op party games to come out in the past few years.

One to four players control cooks in a kitchen, delegating responsibilities as they try to cook and serve increasingly complex orders in a variety of bizarre restaurants.

It’s quintessential co-op, though as the pace and stress ratchets up, you begin to understand how Gordon Ramsey came to rely on such a profanity-filled vocabulary to get things functioning in the kitchen.

The beauty of Overcooked is that it leaves all organisation to the players; who’s frying the steaks? Who’s chopping the veg? Why is the onion soup on fire?!? Who the HELL is doing the washing up because we’ve run out of plates to serve food on?

If you can’t handle the heat then get out of the kitchen – or burn it to the ground in this case.

What Remains of Edith Finch

It’s hard to describe What Remains of Edith Finch without spoiling it. It’s one of those games that needs to be experienced first-hand, and luckily Sony is letting you for free.

The narrative driven title sees you investigating the family home of the Finch’s in an effort to work out why you’re the last one left and what happened to the other members of the family. It’s peculiar and wonderful, and arguably one of the best games to come out in 2017.

PlayStation Plus Games: April 2019

Conan Exiles

Take a sprinkling of Schwarzenegger, a dash of Minecraft and a helping of Ark: Survival Evolved, and you’ll end up with something like Conan Exiles. A persistent online multiplayer game, you’ll be cast into the brutal realm of the world’s most famous barbarian with no belongings (literally nothing – not even a loincloth to hide your modesty) and tasked to simply survive and thrive. It launched to a bit of a mixed response, but has since built a bit of a cult following – in no small part, no doubt, due to the fact that it’s the only game with a penis size slider as part of its create-a-character set up…

The Surge

Imagine Dark Souls in space, and that’s what you’ve got with The Surge. It’s a bit of a corridor slog, squandering its initial mysterious promise, but its combat is meaty and well presented. If you can’t face Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, but still want something akin to a SoulsBorne fix, The Surge will plug that gap.

Rayman 3 HD is a remastering of the PlayStation 2 adventure that pits the eponymous hero against André, an evil black lum, whose aim is to take over the world with his army of  “Hoodlum” soldiers. Silly puns aside, it showed up on PlayStation Plus in JUly.

Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess – PS3 – usually $49.99 / £39.99 / AU$75.95

Deception IV is one of those games you can’t believe wasn’t a free title earlier in its life. The basic goal here is to lure enemies into increasingly grotesque and wacky traps in an attempt to clear missions. We probably wouldn’t waste the hard drive space with this one, but hey man, it’s your console.

For now, here’s every new film that’s released on Netflix since January 2023.

New Netflix movies: March and April 2023

Kill Boksoon

Release date: March 31

This Korean crime drama movie raked in almost 20 million hours viewed in its first week on Netflix. And, by all accounts, it’s another East Asian winner for the world’s most popular streamer.

The flick focuses on the titular Gil Bok-Soon (Jeon Do-yeon), a contract killer with a 100% success rate in the field. However, the secret agent has had to marry her job with being a mother in recent years, causing numerous splits in her relationship with her boss Cha Min-Kyu. When Bok-Soon refuses to complete a specific assignment, an major confrontation is inevitable, leading the titular character to fight for her survival.

Critics have hailed Kill Boksoon as a highly satisfying thriller in the mould of John Wick. So, if you’re a fan of the gun-fu genre, you should check it out.

Murder Mystery 2

Release date: March 31

A sequel to one of Netflix’s most popular original comedy films ever, Murder Mystery 2 sees A-listers Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler return as married couple Audrey and Nick as they look to thwart another whodunnit from going down. Unsurprisingly, a plethora of comedy capers ensue.

Like its 2019 predecessor, Murder Mystery 2 is a pretty derivative take on the murder mystery formula, and some of its humor leaves a lot to be desired. Even so, it’s been a sure fire hit for Netflix, with 64.4 million hours streamed since it debuted on the platform. Expect a third Murder Mystery movie to be greenlit sometime soon, then.

The Magician’s Elephant

Release date: March 17

This heart-warming, family-friendly tale doesn’t immediately stand out from the pack. After all, its official trailer (see above) depicts it as a fairly average film. But The Magician’s Elephant is a wonderful watch. Sure, it contains familiar themes about family and destiny, and its plot is pretty basic at times. Children, though, will love it and adults are sure to get a kick out of its beautiful animation (it’s that, or they’ll be pleased that it’ll keep the kids quiet for a bit).

Based on the Kate DiCamillo’s novel of the same name, it stars Noah Jupe as Peter, a boy searching for his long lost sister. A chance encounter with a fortune teller puts Peter on a collision course with a magician who, well, owns an elephant, with the latter pair seemingly holding the key to Peter locating his sibling.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

Release date: March 10

Luther: The Fallen Sun transforms the hit BBC crime drama series into a franchise capable of telling thrilling tales in the movie medium. Or, rather, that was the goal from its cast and crew. Unfortunately, Luther‘s metamorphosis into a big-budget theatrical offering leaves a lot to be desired, with its janky plot, rushed pacing (especially early on), and lack of captivating villain (Andy Serkis does his best with what he’s given, though) ensuring The Fallen Sun is nothing more than an average watch.

Still, Luther fans are sure to enjoy what’s on offer. With the disgraced detective (Idris Elba) locked up for the various illegal acts he committed in the TV show, Serkis’ antagonistic David Robey has free reign to carry out his serial killer masterplan. That’s until Luther unceremoniously breaks himself out of jail, however, and reluctantly teams up with Inspector Odette Raine (Cynthia Erivo) to put an end to Robey’s murderous ways.

New Netflix movies: February 2023 and earlier

We Have a Ghost

Release date: February 24

Despite its evident star-powered cast – Marvel actor Anthony Mackie and Stranger Things‘ David Harbour among them – We Have A Ghost doesn’t live up to its spookily lofty heights.

The supernatural comedy, which is based on Geoff Manugh’s short story ‘Ernest’, sees Frank Presley (Mackie) and his family move into their new home, only to find it’s haunted by a spirit called Ernest (Harbour). Rather than being scared, though, the Presleys begin recording Ernest for a new YouTube channel, turning him and them into overnight sensations. It isn’t long, though, before the authorities become involved. Uh-oh.

We Have a Ghost should have been a knock-out for Netflix, but it doesn’t wrangle its talented cast and its plot into a meaningful film. Sure, there are some humorous moments and plenty of sentiment within but, like many new Netflix movies before it, We Have a Ghost struggles to make a compelling argument to make it worth recommending.

The Strays

Release date: February 17

Essentially, The Strays is Netflix’s take on Jordan Peele’s winning formula for crafting unsettling horror-infused thrillers. Surprisingly, it does a pretty good job of emulating Peele’s directorial catalog of work, too, albeit it’s a suspense-filled film with a somewhat frustrating ending.

This Nathaniel Martello-White flick tells the story of Neve (Ashley Madekwe), a biracial upper-class woman who leads an idyllic life with her loving family and holds down a well-paying job as a deputy head teacher at a prestigious private school. However, Neve’s life is upended when elements from her troubled pass resurface and threaten to undermine everything she’s built for herself.

If you’re a fan of Get Out, Nope, and Us, The Strays is worth streaming. More casual viewers might not be as enthralled as Peele’s established fanbase or psychological thriller devotees, though.

True Spirit

Release date: February 3

Feel like an uplifting (but sugary sweet) family adventure? True Spirit will fit the bill. The fact it’s based on a true story helps the film out immensely, and it’s an impressive story that critics have dubbed “an empowering tribute to a magnificent achievement.”

At just 16-years old, Jessica Watson began a quest to become the youngest person to complete a non-stop solo sail around the globe. And though this isn’t going to be one of our favourites, it’ll be great for family movie night. Teagan Croft, Anna Paquin, and Cliff Curtis all star.

You People

Release date: January 27

You People is centered around a new couple and their families, who find themselves examining modern love and family dynamics amidst clashing cultures, societal expectations, and generational differences. Jonah Hill (also a producer), Eddie Murphy, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus all star.

Critics have called You People “brilliantly hilarious, pertinent and wickedly smart”, but there has also been criticism of its portrayal of racial tensions. Ultimately, it’s a movie that doesn’t fully commit to its positioning as a rom-com, nor its introspective take on interracial dating.

The Pale Blue Eye

Release date: January 6

Christian Bale dons an older (and slightly less high-tech) detective get-up in new Netflix movie The Pale Blue Eye

Based on the novel of the same name by Louis Bayard, this 1830s-set crime thriller stars Bale as Augustus Landor, a veteran clue-hunter who enlists the help of a young Edgar Allen Poe (Harry Melling) to solve a series of murders at the United States Military Academy. Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Toby Jones, and Charlotte Gainsbourg also feature.

With such a well-known cast, you’d imagine great things. However, it had a somewhat lukewarm response upon release, with some critics bashing it for being too methodically paced. That said, others enjoyed the carefully constructed plot, and many of the cast’s performances, so we’ll leave it to you to decide how you feel.

New Netflix movies: what’s coming in 2023?

Want to know what other new Netflix movies are coming in 2023? Below, we’ve picked out some of the most eagerly anticipated films set to be released in the coming months.

Chupa

Release date: April 7

Billed as a fantasy adventure film, Chupa will tell the tale of US-Mexican teenager Alex (Evan Whitten), who discovers a young chupacabra living in his grandfather’s shed. Unsurprisingly, it isn’t long before the authorities get wind of a magical creature living out in the sticks, forcing Alex, his family, and his friends to protect the creature dubbed ‘Chupa’ at all costs.

Chupa looks like it’ll be another by-the-books family-friendly flick, but there’s sure to be enough charm and heart-warming story beats to make it worth streaming.

The Mother

Release date: May 12

Cue generic Netflix thriller plot: in The Mother, a deadly female assassin (Jennifer Lopez) comes out of hiding to protect the daughter she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men. A bit of a change of pace for Lopez after glitzy 2022 romcom Marry Me, then. This one was scheduled to release last year, but has since been delayed until May 2023.

Extraction 2

Release date: June 16

As its name suggests, Extraction 2 is a direct sequel to Sam Hargrave’s 2020 Netflix original movie, and will see Chris Hemsworth’s seemingly indestructible hero – Tyler Rake – returning for another high-stakes and invariably globe-trotting special ops mission.

The streamer finally showed off its first trailer, which reveals Rake will be tasked with rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison they’re being held in. Expect Rake to be double-crossed at some point again, then.

They Cloned Tyrone

Release date: July 21

Not too much is known about They Cloned Tyrone, but its synopsis reads as follows: “A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio (Jamie Foxx, John Boyega, and Teyonah Parris) onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.” By the sounds of things, then, this new Netflix movie – from first time director Juel Taylor – has more than a few tricks up its sleeve. Its cast looks pretty great, too.

Heart of Stone

Heart of Stone could be Gal Gadot’s next headline-making film franchise. (Image credit: Netflix)

Release date: August 11

With her time as Wonder Woman seemingly coming to an end in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Gal Gadot needs a new headline-making film franchise to lead.

Luckily for Gadot, Heart of Stone could be that movie series. Positioned as Mission: Impossible-style franchise, this action thriller stars Gadot as Rachel Stone, a CIA agent who “is the only woman standing between her powerful, global peace-keeping organization and the loss of its most valuable – and dangerous – asset”.

Unsurprisingly, little else is known about this one, but we know it’ll co-star Jamie Dornan (50 Shades of Grey), Matthias Schweighofer (Army of the Dead), Alia Bhatt (RRR), and Sophie Okonedo (The Wheel of Time). Peaky Blinders and Misfits director Tom Harper helms this entry in our new Netflix movies guide.

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is the long overdue follow-up to Aardman’s 2000 stop-motion classic. (Image credit: Netflix / Aardman Animation)

Release date: November 10

Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream – a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world in Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland, the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. This long-awaited sequel is being helmed by Flushed Away director Sam Fell.

Rebel Moon

Rebel Moon is Zack Snyder’s next tentpole movie. (Image credit: Netflix)

Release date: December 22

Army of the Dead director Zack Snyder is returning to Netflix this year with Rebel Moon, an epic space opera reportedly inspired by both Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. The film’s official synopsis reads as follows: “A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. The desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman who has a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.”

Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, and Anthony Hopkins are all confirmed to star, which we expect will enjoy a limited theatrical release before it lands on Netflix.

Maestro

Bradley Cooper looks unrecognizable as Leonard Bernstein in Maestro. (Image credit: Netflix)

Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)

Produced by Todd Phillips, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and leading man Bradley Cooper (who also directs the film), Maestro centers on the life and legacy of West Side Story composer Leonard Bernstein. Judging by the prosthetics used to transform Cooper into the much older Bernstein, we expect this entry in our new Netflix movies list to be a shoo-in for next year’s Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar (release date depending).

The Mothership

The Mothership is Halle Berry’s next major movie role. (Image credit: Netflix)

Release date: TBA (2023 confirmed)

The Mothership is a sci-fi adventure that follows Sara Morse (Halle Berry) one year after her husband (Omari Hardwick) mysteriously vanishes from their rural farm. When she discovers a strange, extraterrestrial object underneath their home, Sara and her kids embark on a race to find their husband, father, and – most importantly – the truth. Sounds ominous.

When is Presidents’ Day 2024?

Presidents’ Day always falls on the third Monday in February, so this year, the date is February 19, 2024. The holiday was initially held on George Washington’s birthday (February 22) but was moved in 1971 to accommodate the long holiday weekend.

When do Presidents’ Day TV sales start?

Presidents’ Day TV sales usually begin after the Super Bowl (Sunday, February 11), which means we should start to see official deals kicking off on Monday, February 12. Some retailers like Best Buy and Amazon don’t launch official sales until the holiday weekend, with offers going live on Friday, February 16.

Is Presidents’ Day a good time to buy a TV?

Presidents’ Day is a great time to buy a TV if you don’t mind buying an older display. Retailers typically offer record-low prices on last year’s best-selling TVs to make room for new stock. That means you can score huge savings on 2023 TVs, like LG’s stunning C3 OLED  and TechRadar’s best-rated TV, Samsung’s S90C OLED TV.

If you’re looking for a budget display, Walmart and Amazon typically offer huge discounts from brands like Vizio, TCL, and Amazon’s own brand of Fire TVs.
